Hey all
As you may know i've been building a terrain pack recently and have recieved an e-mail from a publisher offering a large sum of cash (A few thousand pound) and 80 percent of the profits thereafter. I hope you can understand that i can't give out much detail now, i just thought it would be great to announce it. I'll post more as soon as I can.
Edit:
Ergh ther should only be one in the title

Uhmm... congrats. You say that you can't give out much detail? How about telling us the stuff you are free to tell?

Sounds too good to be true! What sort of terrain pack? Even I didn't get that sort of deal for Unity.

@Hawkeye
A publisher contacted me saying they were creating a website similar to garagegames.com (no url available yet) but one which will focus mainly on supplying the media needed to create the games. A member of this forum knows that person personally and pointed out my terrain pack to them.

I would be sceptical. An up front fee of thousands plus 80% of takings is an incredible deal, and I highly doubt that a start-up indie games site could afford such a package.

Don't give them any personal details until you can get definitive proof these guys are who they say they are. Things like this happen every once in a while.

A word of warning, though-I agree with David T. Just do a bit of research into who these guys are first before jumping into anything.

Other than that, though, great news!

not being rude but this has happened several times, not many publishers go out of their way to publish stuff, unless you contact them wishing to sell your product.

get all the info from them, company name, website, address, phone number. usually when you get all that they are probably sound.

if you get a contract off them make sure you get it in the post and on paper! dont just sign upto something via the web or email.

i'm guessing this might be another one one of whose phantom publishers who appear then promise the world but never do.

Yeah, who is this member? Not to be rude, but if they don't want people telling you(if this is the case) who he is, then they're probably not to be trusted.

If you're getting a few thousand ($/pounds), then be sure to ask for an advance and make sure they're good for there money. Perhaps give them a few sample terrains or a compiled DBP .exe featuring the terrains to let them know you're good for your product if they won't give you the advance.

Other than this advice, I hope the best for you, this is truly exciting news. If the publishing deal doesn't fall through, consider self-publishing. Somewhere down the road, you sparked someone's interest, so you must have a good product.

Also - do your parents know? If not let them know ASAP. It's good to have adults in the know with things like this.

Actually this is quite suspicious, I mean, for all you know it could be that same forum member is playing a trick on you, when you were telling me on MSN, I was thinking what kind of nut case would pay 1000 + 80% to sell a bunch of high poly terrians that haven't got too much practical use, when terrains are one of the easiest things to make. I personally think someone is attempting to get your hopes up and break them for kicks, as some people on the internet can be real bastards (Why are you looking at me like that? )
But I hope you prove me wrong

Also, as said, so I'm just emphasising it, be cautious, especially when giving any details out.

Yey! I removed the sig...

Sounds like a scam or a joke to me. I don't think landscapes made in Bryce3d fetch much on the market, leaving the "publisher" at a serious loss moneywise.

Think of it logically:

Say you get 80% and a 1000 dollar advance. , publisher gets 20%. Product sells for 10 dollars, and you sell 10 products. You get 80 dollars, they get 20 dollars. So they would have to sell 100 products for them to break even with the advance alone. And then the fact they have to pay server fees and advertisement fees. What if its a boxed product? CD printing, cases, all kinds a fees.

And then the member wants to stay secret? What the hell? Trying to hide his cheating identity...

So I say that its someone pulling your chain.

I feel nothing but absolute pity for anyone who thinks they're going to get thousands of pounds and a ton of royalties for 5-minute Bryce terrains like this.

But really, don't get your hopes too far up dude... many people have made that kinda mistake. And then they find themselves with their hand down some old dudes pants in a motel 6 on highway 49 when I was 12... I mean... umm... HI, have we met? I'm Eric!

I have to say it's odd that someone would pay for quickly made Bryce scenes. They aren't difficult, the software is free on magazines, and to be honest, they are completely useless in games. Anyone who is in the industry would not accept basic Bryce-generated scenes as commercial models.

Check your so-called buyer very carefully. They either have no idea about the industry, or are on a scam.

I think someone is having a laugh at your expense. The numbers just don't make sense.
Say the product sells for £10. The publisher is going to get £2 per sale and it will take 1,500 sales to get their £3,000 back. For the same 1,500 sales you will have made £12,000.

That's one really bad way to invest £3,000.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

Sunrise3D > the others are right to be suspicious. There's been a history of people being contacted by "publishers" here and it's either someone pulling your leg, or someone just out to fleece you in some way. Think about it - this place is a goldmine of intellectual property and someone with an impressive domain name can take it all away from you...

You want the publishers full address and their trading status, available from http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/

Although I wish you every success in whatever's going on, I too would like to echo Megaton's cry of "WTF?!". To paraphrase Roger Myers from the Simpsons; "If I puked in a fountain pen and mailed it to the monkey house, I'd get better results".

I'm sure you're not stupid, just don't do anything that doesn't seem right and you'll be fine. If you do end up finding out it's a joke at least you know what it 'feels' like to have a publishing offer.

I'm not sure what I've done since you came to the forums that seems to offend you so much... And you should use that Home Star avatar again. That one was awesome.
