One of the most common things I get asked about is UV mapping. I had some time this afternoon so I made a 10 minute narrated video tutorial on UV Mapping.

I take you throught the process of UV mapping a character's head. Because if you can map a complex object like a head, then the same techniques can be applied to just about anything. I used my new female clerk model as an example.

Download here, 30mb:

Feel free to donate money to me generously and often if you find this useful. But I will settle for praise too.

ha, "back...and boom!" very nice bond

by the way, for version 7 users, is Best Align the same as average normals right?

also, when you show the UV map at the end, whats that stretch from the back texture? just curious

I think its a similar function, but I've been using version 8 for a while now... Best align adjusts the rotation and scale to give the best projection based on the average normals. Its just a quick little time saver for irregular-shaped objects. But you could also get by very nicely just aligning to the x,y,or z axis. You just might have to do a little more tweaking to individual vertices in the UVW editor to adjust spacing.

Oh and about that stretched area on the final map. That happens to be a goof-up on the ear mapping. I forgot to select one of the faces on the ear while mapping it , so it got stretched across the entire back texture...so of course I had to go back and redo the mapping for one of the ears, arghhh...

Its that little stuff that drives you crazy sometimes...

wow that was awsome.

so now we got the map, and then we open it in our favorite photo editor
and start putting in our textures. How do you have to change the 2d picture say (for example the face) or does max make the changes for you?

Thanks guys

lilgamz, after you save out the UV template from max, you can open it in photoshop and use it as a template to create your texture. As you make changes to your texture in photoshop, max updates the model to reflect the texture changes automatically. But first the texture must be applied to the model, and that is done through the material editor in max.

have you tried lithunwrap? It seems to do almost the same thing but perhaps not as precisely.

No I haven't used lithunwrap. I just don't really have any reason to try anything else. The nice thing about max is that its so tightly integrated with photoshop and can read psd files. I even have a neat plugin for max that can save uv templates as photoshop vector paths, so you can paint your texture with pixel perfect precision, or create perfect alpha masks, etc. Very handy little tool.

No I dont blame you. We would all use those tools if we could. Most of us scavenge together systems from the verycheap and the free.

I would be interested in seeing how you use those photoshop tools.
That would make a neat tutoral as well

Keep up the nice work!

Haha no worries...I really don't expect any donations, it just that I see so many sites have a paypal donate buttn, that I figured "why not?".

Glad you found it useful.
