Every game needs a portly, grizzled old man. So ubiquitous, so useful. He looks like he should be holding a shotgun, right?

And only 1300 polys (that is, tri's).

lol, very nice work crow, your work kinda looks similar to that poopinmymouth.com guy your textures look nice like his 'GUN' models

one thing though, his eyes are looking wierd, perhaps straighten them to look forward?

I was thinking the same thing, all I would really need to do is pale his complexion, maybe rip his clothes and give him some blood stains, and he would look like he was straight out of Resident Evil 4!

Hey Jonathan, no the face isn't symmetrical, and one eye happens to be slightly higher than the other. In the reference pic I was using one eye appears to be staring off into nowhere....it fits the character though I think.

I love the asymmetric facial features. While it's possible to save some texture map space by mirroring the two halves of the face, I think that you inevitably loose character, and this guy is all about character. Excellent work!

So are you going to add blood in to that texture, Bond?
I think it isn't good idea because then it is some kind of zombie and not ''shopkeeper'' anymore.
But if you could make both (bloody and not bloody) textures it would be awesome.

No problem, I miss stuff myself now and then. For the longest time, I didn't know enough to extend the texture 1 pixel past the border of the UV Map (or just create a layer under the texture map of a nuetral color). I figured you were finishing this up in the wee hours of night

I couldn't remember where I'd seen the similar style in texturing; but then I remembered, you were the one to give us the link to his website (tutorials) in the first place. It looks just as good as one of those GUN models. Great work again. Is this a sneek peek at the next pack from TGC/you?

bond, can i see a wireframe please, specifically on the face, im interested in learning new ways of face modelling and seeing the structure may help me to think up a better way

For the torso I start out with an 8-sided cylinder, same for the arms and legs. The head is modeled from a cube and later merged to the body.

bond, when you model something like this in 3ds, do you select make as editable polygon or mesh?

i also have a query, when exported and running in FPSC, the only part that a bullet can collide with on my characters is the stomach/pelvis have you had this trouble before? it seems to be slowing my progress...

Always editable poly for me, I find the tools for the editable poly to be FAR more useful and faster than editable mesh.

Sorry Jon, I've not seen this before. As a test, I just exported my new "girl in skirt" model and shot her in the head, feet, hands, etc. She took damage everywhere. Not to beat a dead horse, but do you have the characters scale correct before rigging? And do you apply a "Reset X-Form" before rigging also? I've noticed that if you try and scale the character's size in the FPE file, rather than get it right while modelling, that it can screw things up - such as the size of the weapon that the character is holding.

That's what I alway try to do. I see most of the default character's are scaled "in game" to about 80% of their size, according the fpe files. And that seems to work well.

I've tried to scale character down to about 20%, and bad things happened.

yeh, that would explain why im getting bad results on 17.5

ive scaled it down in max and set it to 100, and its working perfectly, cheers bond

well actually, his question seems to make sense, talking earlier with bond showed me how he makes some of his textures through the editing of photography, so he could of just "found and old fat man"

... no offense if its a relative or friend bond, lol, is there a story behind this guy, or is it a random person

No story, just random old man. Usually now my character textures are composites pieced together from digital pictures, with maybe some subtle painting in photoshop like wrinkles, cloth folds, etc, to make everything more coherent. He's wearing my slippers, lol. His hands are my hands, although I had to draw the fingernails in photoshop to get them to look "right".

ok so i tried to have a go, but how come my model is so bumpy and the texture is not well... viewable due to the bumpyness
