Before I start I would like to point out that this is not one of those, lets have user mods who have like half the abilities of normal mods and all of that randomness that has come up in the past...

Anyway I have noticed that there has been a bit of so called 1337 speak recently and it really doesn't help anyone, and saw something on another forum that could be used to prevent this.

For those of you familiar with the facepunch studios forum (The Garry's mod forum) you'll know that they have a smartness meter on every user. Whenever you use leet speak and such it lowers your smartness, then at the end of every hour or so, the lowest 5 smartness people get banned for 2 weeks. Now I understand that, that would be a bit extreme for this site since there aren't as many users, but a similar system, where if your smartness goes below a certain point, you're banned for the day or something, could help to reduce the number of completely pointless and useless posts like:

OMG tihs is t3h roXors, totly 1337 mannnN!!!111oneuno.

Just an idea to throw up in the air...

When has there ever been a post like that!?

Seriously, on other forums I've seen administrators use text and 1337 speak and threads (not posts, threads) that consist of "Raaarrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!111"

Pretty diabolical if you ask me.

I just don't think what you're proposing is necessary-99% of posters on these forums don't use any kind of shorthand language - just plain old English.

1. I don't see too much leet speak on this forum, so implementing that wouldn't be useful at all.

2. "Smartness" points is both 1. not a measure of your intelligence, and 2. points. Rich has strongly said there will be no point/rank system at ALL on these forums.

EDIT: First bit was already posted, albeit at the same time

Funky idea alright, but no real need for it here. Perhaps in fpsc forums, however...?

Me neither. Dunno where you "have noticed that there has been a bit of so called 1337 speak recently".

the only time i see this type of speech its usually by people making a joke or just goofing around. So its not a bad idea, but not really useful to most users.

Forum ideas? Ok, how about a button to go to *your* last page rather than the last page of the topic? Totally annoying to remember where you were last in a multipage topic.

Cheers

great idea dazzag.

it would look cool, and easier to read if code boxes had syntax highlighting. i planned to make that in my forum, but i forgot to upload it, and now my harddrive is broken. (at work)

Dazzag - I've always thought that'd be great - a kind of "Go to last read page"...

Yeah, precisely. Or more like "Go to first unread post". Apollo already stores this information anyway, as can be seen from topics showing new posts, and with unread messages being light blue rather than grey. Just needs a button to go to the first light blue message.

Most annoying though is if you click on the last page which then updates your information for the topic to having read all messages upto and including the last page. Fine normally. But if your last post happens to be, say, five pages from the last page, then you now have no way of knowing where your last post was. Unless you trawl backwards through pages of grey messages (you are flagged as having read them cos you went to the real last page of the topic first) looking for your avatar. Always annoyed me that one....

While I'm at it, a nice message expander would be nice. Certain posts may be long as hell, and you may get bored and carry on. Fine, no probs, but still scroll scroll scroll. If you had an option in your profile to default messages to no bigger than than the smallest profile "square" (ie. the bit with your name that never gets smaller than a certain size), then all messages would be the same size. Easy to scroll. Can then press the expand button to see the whole message if it looks interesting. You know what it's like when certain forum members babble on for ages Oh, and yes I do live in a glass house etc Not so bad on my 1600 line monitors at home, but 800 at work sucks big style.

Cheers

Best Idea I've heard in quite some time.

Interestingly I did actually suggest it here quite some time ago. But I lost my post in the massive topic

Now that's more like it. I've wanted one of those buttons for ages. Could it be impemented? I mean, it already records your last post.

Don't see why not. Notice the blue "new" messages? Must already store the info.

C'mon, lets go picket outside DB "house". My cars pretty fast so just wait at Birmingham and jump at the passing Impreza. As long as you have a "DBP" sign clutched in your hands then I'll promise I'll have the window down so you can sail right into the passenger seat.

It should be a really simple SQL query to find out which page the last unread message is on. Thing is - I have a feeling that Rich has plenty of higher priority projects on his hands... I not sure, but there is meant to be a new version of Apollo in development...
