Last weekend my wife called me into the room to have a look at this crazy song that was playing in the Eurovision. Now, if you know anything about Eurovision you just know it's a haven for crazy acts, all sorts of sweet-sick pop, weird clothing and mustaches from all around Europe so I dully walked into the living room expecting to see more of the same.

It turned out it was the Finnish entry, a hardrock song being performed by Monster-dressed people. Now this _was_ strange even by Eurovision standards! But, you know what? The song rocked! It had been a fair while since I last really liked a song from this contest but this one blew me away. Better yet, the song actually went on to win the festival. Brutal!

It turned out that the band was called "Lordi", a name I had heard before but never got around to listened to. Last week I hunted down one of their albums and also watched a couple of clips in YouTube and I was also very impressed. If you like hardrock with catchy choruses you should give these guys a spin.

My wife says she thinks this is the end of Eurovision. I personally hope this is just a beginning: what say yee all?

Rock on dude or somesuch.

EDIT: If you decide to hunt down their clips, make sure you like and are not scared/offended by Horror movies imagery: The Ring and Blairwitch stuff.

I have vague plans for World Domination

I'd heard Lordi before, thought they were ok, but not good enough to warrent an album purchase. Almost died of shock to see them on Eurovision though.

Apparently the finnish government didn't want them to enter and loads of people were really offended by them. It'll be interesting to see what happens next year.

It was truly awesome. It was the only reason I watched Eurovision (that, and Terry Wogan making his usual mild-digs at everything in his usual mellow style).

Lordi are just phenomenal, and it pleases me greatly that they got the highest score ever in Eurovision. Glad the UK gave it a 12

(Lets just not mention the atrocity that was the UK entry...)

I thought the whole point of Eurovision was to have performers that didn't have albums or record deals (i.e. non professional)? Otherwise we'd just throw up our best performers from the circuit. Surely if Lordi have albums on sale, they're a professional band?

I always watch Eurovision because I enjoy a good laugh.

For sheer crap, I rated:

1. the UK entry - it was utterly awful;

2. the baltic state that entered the Britney Spears look alike - total rubbish; and

3. the French entry about which ... well ... enough said.

The highlights once again were listening to Terry Wogan criticise everything (the man is an institution) and watching the predictably biased voting.

Cheer if you like bears! Cheer if you like jam sandwiches!

Next time the UK will enter 'The Darkness' and see how they fare.

OR Ireland could enter U2, that would rock, because although I never watch it, I'd love to see these pro's get pwnd!

Wow - the eurovision topic is a bit late this year...

No baltic state entered Britney. I think it was Armenia. Something around there.

Lithuania should have won. If only so they could sing that song as winners.

Latvia were also amazing - the a capella band and the dancing robot. Great.

As soon as I saw Lordi a week before I knew they'd win - and I'm so happy. Finland is my adopted second country, and I'm going to try and be there next year.

Yeah, Terry Wogan makes the whole thing worth watching.

Ugh....tell me about it....

I was actually ashamed to be English. It was horrific. The moral of the song was erm...don't listen to your teachers. It wasn't so much a song as an appeal to chavs to get their vote. Diabolical...

[wishfull thinking]
I'm hoping the finnish entry next year will be Children of Bodom, Kalmah, or Finntroll. It'd be nice to see In Flames or Arch Enemy for Sweden too. [/Wishfull thinking]

Do you remember the Portuguese song? Of course you don't - it was so bad it came 19th on the semi-final!

Now _THAT_ was a bad entry, even by our time-honed appaling standards!

Some people say that the only reason Lordi won was that World of Warcraft players told each other to vote for Lordi. I think they were the best anyway.

But isn't this old news?

I liked Lithuania, especially that guy's stupid dance.

I didn't watch past that, but I saw Lordi on tele last night, and they were good - suprisingly.

Gotta love the Germans for appearing as cowboys. Yuck yuck, they are so crazy, you wouldn't be knowing what they are about to do next!!!! Amusing how they always have to show that they do have a sense of humour. Nice try. Back to the sausage farms for you...

Lordi were alright. But typical years in the past Euro style. Even though it wasn't typical Euro stuff, still was the type of music and look that is well out of date. I mean check out the words... please.... Even their manager looked just like Kiss haven't looked in 2 decades or so (love Kiss BTW, so don't have a go )

Oh and it's driving me up the wall, but the Lordi drummer (think it was the drummer) is totally a complete match to a monster in a film (the big mouth twit). Can't quite place it though....

Didn't catch it all, but for once, I found myself enjoying a Eurovision song. Who woulda thunk it...

Him.

And the UK entry totally sucked. Daz ****ing Simpson. What a complete ****. Honestly, Eurovision might be a total load of rubbish these days (and only watched for Terry), but at least take it slightly more seriously. With a really good song we can at least be rightious in our grumpiness of no-one voting for us again. Failing that we threaten to invade and take over their countries. Again.

Cheers

The great think about the UK is that people know that Eurovision is just a laugh. And you have Terry Wogan (who is a hoot) to remind everyone of that.

Over here in Portugal, people take it dead serious. We have the same incredibly straight faced/grave sounding guy presenting it every year. And people/singers really think "this time, we'll win. Honest guv.". And then when we lose spectacularly people think "Oh no, we was robbed. Again"!

That's the difference in European thinking at its best.

PS - Of course people in Portugal don't actually think in cockney, but you get what I mean.

I think Dark Tranquillity playing something from Projector, maybe Therein, would blow away everyone! Mikael Stanne has the most amazing voice. I think Angela Gossow would scare everyone

I agree with Children Of Bodom for Finalnd next time though, that would kick ass.

I think Nightwish could win it for Finland again, if they ask Tarja to come back.

And, yes, Angela Gossow _would_ be a bit too much for most people.

The annoying thing is that since getting all political our neighbours don't vote for us (everyone hates us basically). Some places then split up into multiple countries which then vote for each other, no matter how rubbish their songs are. Think about it, if the UK split up and put all the seperate countries into it then they would all intentially give England nothing. Hmmm. Come to think of it, I'm actually Welsh, so this is actually a good thing Hurrah, split up the UK for Eurovision so the Welsh can do well (because all the split countries would vote for Wales, even England who are sort of oblivious to Welsh hatred towards them).

Oh, and Welsh songs are totally dire and sound like they come from the 70s. Should fit in totally with Eurovision then

What is extra cool about Wales is that pretty much everyone there knows someone (normally a second cousin for some reason) who has got to the top of the welsh language song charts (sell about 2 dozen copies should do it I reckon) or been in Pobl y cwm. Totally funny to see your uncle Idris boogying away to a welsh language version of Lonesome tonight on Eurovision. Take that dire old fashion death metal band!

Cheers
