Normally I avoid reality TV with a passion that is practically religious.

However, this January I had to take a business trip to Taiwan. I didn't have much to do in the evenings and I found myself watching the auditions for the latest series of American Idol on the TV. Having laughed my bottom off at all the appallingly bad al capellas, I got a bit hooked, and so have followed the series on ITV2 here in the UK.

Anyway, the object of that rather discursive introduction was to say that I am very pleased both by the fact that Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks reached the final, and particularly by the fact that Taylor won it. Without wishing to detract from the other 15 candidates (and particularly Katharine who, part from being hot, is also very talented), it is quite a heart warming tale to see the little guy done good. I even like his new single.

Plus, he's just made grey hair cool. Who'd have thought that would ever happen?

Little guy done good.

Fat chick overcame her battle with weight to still be a fat singer.

Lispy sensitive gay guy, but doesn't fffffftffffftffffffftffffftfffFLAP when he sings.

Old woman without a head will win it next year.

Seriously, I'm sick of these reality TV bleading heart stories. Ohh, Tic-Tac (Pete) from Big Brother got picked on as a kid because of his condition, boo freakin hoo. Has anyone ever considered that if these people deserved to be famous they would be already?, they wouldn't have to humiliate themselves every day.

Turn away from the dark side Philip, there's nothing for you there except bad cover versions of bad songs by bad artists with bad hair.

These shows get worse when there is a personal hatred between people. Last night X-Factor battle of the Stars started. Sharon Osbourne is a judge as usual, but one of the stars in Rebecca Looes. She's famous for being "overeasy", in particular with David Beckham.

So to recap, we have Sharon Osbourne, good friend of The Beckhams. And we have Rebecca Looes, famous for claiming to have had an affair with Mr. Beckham.

The result is professional, non-biased opinion on Rebecca's singing (which was dire), such as:

"You should try wearing your knickers next time to warm up your vocal chords"

and

"You chose a good dress to show off your latest Boob job"

The retort from Rebecca was that she was there to raise money for charity, to which Sharon replied:

"You're only here for one charity, and that's yourself"

All live on prime time TV, nice! I'm so glad we live in a civilised society where we respect and care for one another. God forbid we lived in a society of debauchery, deceit, lies, infidelity and revenge. What would Philip do for a living!

So as bad as American Idol may seem for it's cheese, we're doing a much worse job here. Between Big Brother and X Factor, I think we have set the lowest possible standards, and failed to meet them.

*sighs* Please, conspiracy theories are good for a laugh, but this isn't the audience you're looking for, fighting spirit. You'll be telling us next that a card game predicted various catastrophies etc etc.

TV on the other hand is generally guff. I'll watch Doctor Who, and episodes of CSI - and I'll avoid everything else. Anything with 'real' people in it has me screaming for the hills in the opposite direction.

People still look up to, and aspire to be, on the telly one day. And 'reality' TV (and talkshows etc) teach them that "You to can aspire to be famous and crude with no shame!"

sorry but if they are smart enough to use TV to dumb people down i doubt they'd be stupid enough to do something like that.

[edit-on-topic] anyway, i don't watch TV shows, unless i'm at somebody elses house, and then i try to steer the activites to something a little less brain numbing.

I only really watch long-running drama series like Lost and Buffy when it was on. I like good stories and character development. I also watch comedy series like Scrubs and Red Dwarf when it was on. Actually, most of my favourites finished years ago.

The early stages of X factor are always good for a laugh though.

Are you one of those nuts who genuinely believe that the royal family are evil shapeshifting reptiles from another planet? (Seriously-that's a real conspiracy theory)

Yes, but quoting conspiracies from Angels and Demons is not the best way to get your point across . Bearing in mind the author's best selling book is based on a self-confessed 1960's fraud by a certified lunatic, yet he passes it off as fact, undermines everything he ever has or ever will write. I could go on, but I'll bore myself .

What about Steve Martin He's way more talented

@ The Illuminati thing: I don't know a lot about the subject, but I know Washington DC is laid out in the shape of a pentegram (sp?) and the Washington monument, an obelisk (some illuminati symbol), is exactly 666 ft. tall, to the centimeter, from its foundation to its top. I saw a special about the illuminati and the free masons on the History Channel (or maybe discovery)... pretty creepy stuff.

Yes, it would be stupid, wouldn't it.

There are a billion and one conspiracy theories, and half of those claim to have "rock solid proof". But the human mind is marvelous at seeing patterns in things - especially when there aren't any patterns there.

What I love is the bible code.

Apparently we're all going to die this year. I'm not going to express my opinion on the subject for AUP reasons (lets just say I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist), but I'm surprised that no-one's thought of the most obvious way to disprove it. Just find a prediction for 2007. That'll shut 'em up...

@mods-if you find this post too religious, please delete this post. I know it's borderline and I don't want to be responsible for a lock. Thanks.

I'm amazed that this thread hasn't been locked, lol. I hate George Bush more than any of you (and I'll argue that to no end lol), and I loved Farenheit 911, too, but I don't think he's quite THAT evil. Did he take advantage of those of us who lost family and friends (including me) on 9/11? Yes he did. Did he benefit from our suffering here in NY and use cheap scare tactics to get the people who live in Idaho or Nebraska, places that a terrorist would NEVER strike, to cover their windows and hide in their basements? Yes he did. Did he profit from 9/11 in general? Totally. But did he orchestrate 9/11? No... he's not smart enough to do anything that complicated.

The best bit about that film is the TV ad for the parachute. He guy who's trying to sell it is talking about its ease of use, yet the woman can't put it on!

That part was awesome The sad part is, I actually know a guy who said he bought that stupid thing! He works in the New York Life building, too, and that's not exactly a skyscraper... if he jumps from that, he'll be dead anyway.

I thought it was a good movie. I wish it had more of an effect, though. Almost every conservative I know hates or is at least angry with Bush (now that it's too late), but when that movie came out and I told them to see it, they didn't. Eh, but what can you do Chances are he'll be impeached at the end of this year anyway... but it's too little too late. Anyway...

Did you guys see Bowling for Columbine? It's less political, a lot funnier, and I think it's my favorite of his movies. He directed Canadian Bacon, too... I just found that out recently
