Okay, I normally NEVER make new threads (havent for a couple years now), but I have a question that seems to be tugging at me. I am looking to upgrade my graphics card from an ATI x300 64 MB to one of two cards. My slot type is a PCI-E x16.

Now, the toss up. Should I get this or this?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125002
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2183361&CatId=1826

Or do you know of a better card which supports dual monitors yet can still, say, rock Oblivion at mid-to-high settings under $200?

Once again, this is NOT going to be a debate about whether GeForce or ATI is better (but if you can PROVE that one has better qualities than the other as far as these cards are concerned, then feel free to state them), but I would like to know if I'm puttin my money in the right place before I buy.

Thanks a load for all your help.

Out of those two the 800xl can be unlocked by the 6800 i believe outperforms the x800 but for the money you can get a much better card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127209
or

or

any of those are amazing. The top is better I think then the bottom but now its preference on ATi or nvidia fan and price.

btw these blow the 6800 and 800xl away

He already bought the 6800

all three doesnt blow the 6800 XFX model away, as it only has 256mb ram, and the pipeline increase isnt that good..

A friend of mine has the ATI, says its awesome, but I haven't seen it, so I don't really have an opinion (for once)

edit: Nevermind... his is actually made by ATI, not Saphire, so now I REALLY don't have an opinion

out of the two you posted, i would go with the nVidia card.

reasons:
* geforce 6 series have Pixel Shader 3.0
* geforce 6800 series outperform the x800 series (not in all cases, but in this case i think it will)
* nVidia is perfect for viewing high resolution movies and games
* because i have a geforce card

also, if you purchase a card in this league, it would be wise to check your PSU power. i have a 350w, and i couldn't run 3d applications with a x800GTO, it didn't retrieve enough power. so i switched back to the geforce 6600gt.

I have 550w PSU, so I doubt that the PSU will give me any trouble. As of right now, I'm running a pretty decent monster rig, except for some reason I had that horrible graphics card O.o. Well as Steve said, I decided to go with the GeForce, because I did some more extensive research, and found it to be along the lines of how Lukas described it, and found the ATI to not be such as good as that. I've also used both ATI and GeForce before (this current one being the ATI, which is a higher model card than the GeForce) and find that even the lower scale GeForce 5200 was more stable than this card. So hopefully it will show up soon, cant wait to double my dev space and make a use for this LCD monitor on my desk that hasn't been active for weeks now.

Thanks so much for you help.

Nooblets, feel free to off topicize as you see fit.

Well, I have a 6800 GT and my brother has an x800... not sure which one exactly, but his straight from the factory is slightly slower than mine, but he flashed it and unlocked a few more pipelines which in turn makes his card a good bit better, and he still uses stock cooling. The 6800 however is a very nice card for the money. I love mine.

I've been reading alot of reviews recently, and have come to the conclusion that the best card on the market at the moment, balancing value with proformance is the Inno3D 7600GT at £126 including VAT. It features 12 pixel pipelines and 5 vertex shaders, which might not sound like much, but it's backed by a 560Mhz Core and 700Mhz memory. At a resolution of 1280 x 1024 on Far Cry it returns a highly respectable 39 Frames per second. Pushed up too 1600x1200 it still managed a playable 24 FPS. This is at full graphics settings of cause. The closest contender is the ATI X1800 which provided simular results but was about £25 more expensive from what I've read.

If £126 is a bit rich for you, you could go for the cut down version, the 7600GS also for Inno3D, it's core is 400 rather then 560Mhz, but it's £47 cheaper at £79. At 1280x1024 on far cry it managed a playable 25FPS, but to be honest these games still look pretty good at 1024x786 so you'll get some pretty decent frame rates. The ATI cards are as a rule simular in preformance, yet usually a little more expensive. Add the nVidia, unified driver system making it easier to get the most up to date drivers. I'm, still very much on the nVidia side of the fence, and am designing my new system around the 7600GS card, perhaps the GT if my budget allows it.

I think I'm pushing about 10-15 on 800x600 right now

i can't even play farcry on highest graphics settings. the game crashes, or it switch in lowest possible settings.

I'd get the GeForce. I've had issues with ATI system compatibility so I went back to Nvidia, which is who I've used ever since Voodoo went bye-bye.

It's cheaper, dual dvi, hdtv, dual ramdacs (i'm assuming the ati only had 1) and a faster memory clock by 200mhz.

The only downside I see (for me) is that it doesn't mention any dsub connection. Since I only use CRT monitors....

Most graphics cards have a DVI to SVGA converter.

My Geforce 4 card is really showing its age now as it does not support any decent shaders. Pc Pro magazine has been running some nice articles on graphics cards recently and given me some ideas.

My problem is my pc is still AGP and I'm not planning on buying a new setup for another year or so, when I will splash out on a AM2 board and dual core athlon and a top notch PCI-E card.

So, in the mean time I am going to wait until the AGP version of 7600GS comes out in next month or two. It is cheap, very powerful, and best of all it's silent as it has no fan. The 6800 series is getting a bit old now, so a couple more months is ok for me.

There are a couple of great Gainward 'bliss' silent AGP 7800 cards out there but they are way too expensive.

Boo!

I have to admit I was going to buy the 7800GS to keep my old AGP 754 based system going. But at £200 I might as well get a new AM2, and CPU then save for the RAM and a nice 7600GS instead. I might even go for the new Samsung 250 8mb SATA/150
