i just got back from a short break with some freinds, and plugged my camera into the laptop.

i wanted to take my camera out, and i tried using the "safely remove hardware" icon, but it said a program was using it. this wasnt true, i looked in the system processes and i couldnt see anything using it, so i just unplugged it.

now when i turn the camera on or plug it back in, it turns itself back off after a second.

how do i get my camera working again?

try and look for a hard reset function, i had a similar problem on a pda when i added some programs it totally messed it up so i hard resetted it(restting to factory settings) then reuploaded everything.

Cameras normally wont have a hard reset button.

Try taking the batter out for around 15 minutes, put it back in, and try again.

The alternative would be to uninstall the USB drivers, and let Windows re-detect it.

Dont do anything I wouldn't do. But if you do, take pictures.

The most likely thing to have fried would be your SD or memory card - it probably got fraggled when you switched off.

When your PC gets connected, it's like a USB pen drive, yank those from their slots without safely disconnecting and the same fragglement often occurs. If you don't disconnect, then it's reading from the card when you remove it - like writing to a floppy then throwing your PC down a lift shaft halfway through. I might be exagerating with that.

You need to format your memory card from your camera I think, maybe plug it in and check 'My Computer' for it's storage location, ignoring what the camera does - I think it's finding your fraggled memory card and failing to recognise it.

I can confirm that usb pen drives do not like being yanked out before you 'safely remove hardware'. One of my old flatmates did exactly that and killed it stone dead. He sweet talked some women at PC World though and got a free replacement.

Should try the safetly remove icon twice. I have a USB key that *always* needs to have that selected twice to work. Saying that, all my flash memory drives have never had a problem being yanked out, and I backup on a daily basis. Always wait till they stop flashing mind.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing
