ahhhhhh!!!,

hey all, I just have to respond. true.

a person that I met and talked with at the gym recommended a different workout routine and different type of exercises for me to try and do for a few months. And then after a few months with this routine...either modify it or go on to a completely different workout routine.
I will just say that this person looked liked Chuck Norris or maybe his brother. Yet, had the muscles and body of the Juggernaunt on the X-Men movie. But with leaner muscle mass.

Okay...so here is the basic routine he told and showed me.

first, warm up and stretch out for a few minutes. some calistenics are okay with this warming up....such as side bends, trunk twists,
and neck rotations.
Now pick a few compound exercises. And then pick one or two near-isolated exercises. For my compound exercises I have the bench press
and the dumb-bell shoulder press. For the near-isolated exercise I have dumb-bell reverse curls.
For each lifting exercise start out with a moderate amount or moderate+ amount of weight. One which you can still control and handle good but not too heavy but also not too light. Again, either moderate or moderate+ Also, the timing or speed is at or near medium pace.

now here is the exercise routine and workout flow:

bench press (150 pounds) 4 reps
rest: (15 to 20 seconds) 18 seconds
dumbell shoulder press (35 pounds) for both arms 7 reps
rest20 to 30 seconds) 25 seconds
dumb-bell reverse curls (35 pounds) right arm:5 reps left arm:3 reps

major rest (1.5 to 3 minutes) 2 minutes

I then repeat the above first routine.

then for cooling down I did 50 reps of leg ups and a set of 20 situps.

this routine only took me under 25 minutes to do.

the person at the gym also told me to take off usually 2 to 3 days. sometimes 4 days too. And also to have an alterante workout routine in mind for when you are not around weights and/or for some varitety as well too.
finally, he told me to supplement and complement on various differing days with some walking, calistenics, a few isometrics too.
And not!...not to take any of that creatine and steroid crap. A waste on both your money and your mind and body too.

hey, after 5 workouts I'm getting stronger and with more endurance
and as well as more functional strength and endurance too. that is true!

cheers,

I had 2 different workouts and would alternate every week; One for strength and one for stamina.

strength - heavier weights, fewer reps
stamina - lighter weights, many reps

For both, I always did 3 sets.

strength:

Full pyramid. Do 10 reps with a lighter weight, then 8 with heavier, 6 even heaver, 4, 2, 1. Then go back up in reps decreasing the weight. After about a year, I increased my bench by about 60lbs. Sometimes, I'd go for the military press or other inclined bench pressing. Makes a big difference, so use a light weight until you know how it feels at different angles.

Once every 2 weeks, we do negatives. Do NOT do by yourself. The point of negatives is to try to push your limits and do more weight than you can handle. Only 1 or 2 reps, 2 sets no more than 3. Keep someone over you at all times while bench pressing. If you max out at 185, put 200 on the bar and fight the weight the whole time down and up while the person helps you. They're not suppose to pull the weight, only keep it from smashing you by relieving just barely enough weight so you can push it back up.

Flies, extending the arms out straight while laying on back holding dumbells and pulling them up over you. I'd do about 10-12 reps at 35lb dumbells.

kickbacks, extending your arm back behind you.

work upper body one day, legs doing squats and what not the next, and would alternate each day for the week. Some other random exercises in there as well, I forget names of them.

For stamina, basically the same, though sometimes I'd skip the pyramid and just 3 sets of 20-30 reps with 95lb benchpress, really helps you build the stamina.

I'd work out 5 days weeks for about 2 hours each day. I gained about 8lbs I'd say over the year, which is pretty good considering the most a healthy person can gain in muscle in 1 year is about 10, unless they're on steroids. I take no supplements of any kind, but tried a few of those weight gainer shakes, didn't stick with them.

I havent weight trained for ten years. I was able to enter national body building championships since my coach/ gym owner was encouraging me to do it.
I think i should get back into it.
work however eats up too much time.

@ indi,

I hear you about how work eats up too much time. I'm nocturnal in nature. Either vampire or werewolf...or even hybrid. I work at Hitachi in manufacturing. I work on the nightshift, 12 hours per shift. The Hitachi House of the Dead.
so what I do at times and when my exercise time falls on my work night.....I do my alternate routine. Since obviously I'm not around conventional weights. Sometimes, I'll split up my alternate routine into 2 parts.
here is my alternate routine:

warm up and stretch out for a few minutes.
2 sets of side bends.
2 sets of trunk twists
2 sets of leg ups.
on these...I pretty much take a little breaks of 10 to 25 seconds for each exercise so far....
also in the split break down mode....I'm done with the first part too.

now for the rest of the whole workout or the second part of the split routine(maybe an hour to a few hours later...depending upon work schedule and breaks. You fit the routine into your normal work schedule. and since I have all night and morning for the next day too.)
3 sets of chest press with isometrics.
rest for up to a minute for each exercise.
3 sets of arm curls with isometrics.
rest for up to a minute for each exercise.
1 set of chest flexing....this is a combination of flexing your whole chest and upper body. And they keeping your body flexed with some simple arm and upper body movements.
after that, I cool down with some situps or standing stomach pull-ins. which is to exhale or breathe out and then bend your upper body down. then when bringing it back up...inhale or breathe in. repeat a number of times. true.

again, you can do the whole routine or split it down into 2 or more mini-routines. you fit the over-all workout to your job and workflow schedule.
on other days, I do some walking inside or outside around the plant. usually on one of my breaks.

@ megaton cat,

do you exercise and workout without weights? like any isometrics, martial arts, dancing, gymnastics or even with with sport-like or recreational activities??? like skating, skateboarding, surfing, or even rock or wall climbing?
I do a few martial art movements at times and as well as some dancing. Dancing is good to burn the fat and sugars, and to help you with timing and coordination. And its fun too. I dance and bop up n down to various music. From Nu Schooz and Ace of Base to Metallica and even AC/DC. Oh yeah and even Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, and the Scorpions too. true!.
hey, I like the Eagles and especially their song 'One of these Nights'. I developed a dance or dance-like pattern with this song that involves a combination of an Indian rain dance and a Laurel and Hardy schuffle tap dance. ahhhh!!!

@ phaelax,

thats a very good routine with the full pyramid. When I'm finished or done with this routine that I'm doing...I'll probably go onto this.
yet, with the myraid of routines, workouts and this and that already out there...I just wanted and even needed to try something different. This routine that I'm doing and as well as the alternate routine as well.......they both don't take a lot of time. Can be done in and around 25 to 30 minutes or so. You don't do a lot of different exercises but concentrate on a few compound exercises and one or a few near-isolated exercises. The weight poundage amounts are of moderate or moderate+ but with a good intensity. And finally, its something fresh and different.
The guy who showed me this...the brother of Chuck Norris
told me to try this out. And that if you like it and if it works good for you and your body and health...then do this routine for a few months. Then, afterwards, either modify it or change and go onto an entirely different routine.

@ drew,

haven't forgotten you bro. So, you question the workout Gods and Goddesses of Mount Weight Olympia!??
with such a pantheon of celebrity deities and legends such as Atlas, Hercules, Thor, Wonder Woman and of currently Bruce Lee, Hulk Hogan, Billy Graham Superstar, Jack LaLane, Chuck Norris, the Body Buddies, Mike Mentzer, Joe Weider, Franco Columbo and even Arnold himself.

what do you do for working out? .....weight and even non weight activities?
hey drew, why don't you try the pyramid workoput that phaelax was talking about. or even the workout that I was doing. but remember, on either or a weighted or non-weighted workout start out small and moderately. if you like either, then continue with it for a few months. if you don't...then, change your workout.

cheers,

I do shaolin kung fu, in which every year we have 6 weeks called black belt conditioning, and 8 weeks (two groups of four) titled weight vest conditioning.

in black belt conditioning we meet up at the park early in the morning and run 2 miles, then we do many many reps, 800 push ups sit ups and squats. Not all at one time, but it takes us a few hours to get through. We dont start counting until the person who ate breakfast throws up (usually the newbie)

In weight vest conditioning we put on weighted vests up to 30-40 lbs (im only 135 as it is) and go through about 1/4 of the black belt conditioning. This is a biiitch

Id say to have a proportionable body I wouldnt think of using weghts, besides the one your body gives you. I havent gotten much bigger, but god knows ive gotten tons more definition and strength none the less.

We never do pushups on the palms, only on the fists at different angles to isolate different muscle groups. Sit ups, again not normal, isolating different muscle groups as well.

Ive never lifted weghts in my life and i dont know how much i can bench, but my muscles are denser than the big bulky guy next to me in the gym and of course i am then more agile and can move quicker.

If you are obese the number one thing you can do is eat right, doing that in sync with some kind of martial art or work out routine will help. You have to stick with it! Ive helped many people coming into the martial arts school that i teach at lose many pounds. The military will force this on you, though if you have enough self discipline you can do it yourself. I dont mean become a vegitarian but lay off the extremely unhealthy.

A quick fix that ive done is i started buying gatorade flavored fitness water instead of soda. Almost no sugar but i enjoy it just as much. This will help a ton.

Im really not a health expert but i hear my friends at school talking about losing weight qhilst eating two large cookies. I tell them to shut up and do something about it. They just go home and get on the computer and watch TV and do nothing else and then complain. I can understand if you have a disability or are injured but they have no room to talk. I know we techies can lose sight of the physical world but its very important to maintain a healthy body whilst you work. Shoot if your looking for time do some pushups or situps while you wait for solaris to download or wait for some program to compile/install.

Anyways these are my words take it or leave it, but ive experienced these methods for years. Its not for lazy @sses but it also works very well.

Agreed. I spend hours on the the PC, yet an equal amount of hours training in martial arts.

I train for 2.5 hours a day, 5 days a week which isn't overkill for someone my age. I do hand-to-hand, staff, knives, and katana which means I have a very fair amount of "snap" in my shoulders from all the hours of controlling my weapon (especially while practising with a katana)

Even after years of this, I'm not exactly ripped or bulky or any of that stuff. I am roughly the same size/weight as OddMind but as he said, it's muscle density, physical conditioning, flexibility and stamina that counts. Sure you can be huge and have "big guns" but you'll also have an equivalent amount of body fat, which won't exactly speed you up.

Not to mention the many practical & spiritual gains of martial arts practise. It ofcourse varies from art to art, but I won't be getting into that here. Get your ass off that PC and do something!

WRONG. Let me break it down for you:

$50/ mo, time warner cable's Road Runner internet service, breaks down to approximately 1.8667861409796893667861409796894e-5 cents per second times the 30 seconds it took for me to read and view = 5.6003584229390681003584229390681e-4 cents you owe me for my internet service use

$320/ mo for the electric bill, that breaks down to about 1.1947431302270011947431302270012e-4 per second and 0.0035842293906810035842293906810036 you owe me for electricity

Add these to the 3 clicks and 21 keyboard presses it took me to respond and when you run that against the amount I spent on my keyboard and mouse you get approximately 0.00005989312233211234 that I'm owed for using them

When you add all of this up, and then tack on the amount of time I wasted looking at that picture, plus the emotional damage I encrued while viewing and realizing that time would have been better spent elsewhere, you owe me $12.36. You can pay up now.

to Batvink,

yes. children...and 3 of them can be a handful and very tiring and draining too. and to top it off with a fulltime job. true.
about the full time job...I work a full time job and with overtime at times. At Hitachi and on the nightshift....12 hours per shift.
Its tiring and draining too. Yet, on my exercise time....I split the routine down to manageable chunks of workout functions. true!

yet, exactly one of the reasons why I'm doing this routine. For under 25 minutes to do and then you're done for the time being. then, take both mentally and physically at least 2 to 3 days off. and sometimes 4 days off. for the days/nights off I don't concern myself at all...or try not to...about exercise but with other things and interests in life too.

I don't know about your job nor about your family. have you ever thought about doing some exercise...even just a little bit...at work or on a break. Whether its in manufacturing or even in computing or just a desk job. get up and stretch and walk around and do some calistenics. nothing complex nor difficult. just a little to stretch your whole body and get the cobwebs out of your brain.
maybe you can..if you like or want...involve some family time to recreation or a few exercises with the kids.

to leave ya pondering and on a good and joking note:

and with the voice of Tommy Lee Jones: "attention! you small soldier! get off your lazy, fat ass couch potato butt and stop watching Lost, American Idol,CSI, and the cancelled series of Invasion and give me 20 push ups and 20 sit ups. And walk in house or around the base too."

hey oddmind,

wow!! thats very impressive! true.

I agree with you. and...I don't use weights that much like I used too. in my alternate routine and along with my usual walking and calistenics....no lifting of conventional weights nor other objects either.
yet, with this lifting routine that I do....I just do 2 compound exercises and one near-isolated exercise. and then a few cooling down calistenics.

there will be a time when I change or modify my exercising where I will not use any weights and be more concerned with just functional strength and endurance...and just using my own body and body weight.
hey!, just trunk twists alone will do wonders for your whole upper body. toning, tightening, and strengthning of your sides, abs, and stomach. your core or base. and also the way I modify the original exercise and movement I work out, tone and strengthen the back, arms and chest too. But just like swimming...at least 30 minutes to an hour before you eat anything.
hmmmmm...... ya know Uncle Sam ahhhh!!!! I'll be finishing up my current workout in a few months. But, I was thinking of this for my next up n coming workout routine in mid August:

warm up and stretch out for a few minutes
a few sets of side bends, leg ups and sit ups.
1 set of isometrical chest press
1 set of isometrical arm curls

and then after a minute or so of rest.

at least 2 sets of trunk twisting excursions. standard and at a medium pace or speed of trunk twisting and then gradually followed with tensed or flexed trunk twisting side to side. rest for a minute or so. and then repeat.

anybody want or like to try this? definitely I will try this after I finish my current routine in mid August.

and megaton cat,

whoa and wow!! too.

and I agree with you too. muscle density, speed, flexibility and
coordination. in other words, functional strength and endurance.
I don't want big nor bulky muscles either. so, I use little weights as possible. Yet, I like and want the lean muscle mass.
But, I like to include a little in some areas. A little weight lifting, some isometrics, some walking and dancing, and a little calistenics. This is for my current workout.
In a few months...I'm going over to non-weight exercising, work out and recreation too. true.

my friend Jim Davis is involved in martial arts too. I don't remember the name of his style or art. But he does these ballet style of movements and workout. He is really strong and fast. But the workout is supposed to be done with a smooth and tensed way of various movements and patterns and at a slow pace.

thank you for encouraging me, too.

I'm sorry, but it's one of those things that floats my boat. You know, everyone has their interests.

Totally fine, I'm guessing you're maybe looking to join them when you get older.

Probably, not sure though, still debating, if my parents didn't have a phobia of war, then I definately would, but I have to keep in mind of their thoughts and opinions, which is perfectly fine.

That's cool, but at the same time it's your choice you know.
Good luck with that - I know alot of people taking up the military kind of thing right now, seems fine to me. It's a living.

Ultimately, you have to make your own choices. People who don't are usually scared and crutch on the desires of others to support those fears righteously.

Remember, though, joined the Navy doesn't make you a Navy Seal. Expecting that is like applying Blizzard to work in the mail room and expecting to work as a lead game designer in three months. Being a Seal, like a Ranger or Special Forces, is a great honor and distinction, and certainly not something everyone can accomplish.

Well Yeah it's my choice, but I still want to see what some say. I know joining the Navy doesn't make you a SEAL. You have to tie knots 50 feet under water, and swim 50 meters underwater in Bud/s, and you a lot of other crap you must do. But since I'm still young, if I train for 7-8 years for this. But look on the bright side, if I became one, you'd probably never hear from me again on the forums.

Why am I obsessed with Navy SEALs?

First, they are involved in the Military (obviously) but they aren't sacrficed like Marines. Second, they do SCUBA Diving, and Sky Diving, which are like dream job, getting paid to do that, and then some. Plus they do running, and I love running, just not ladders, I love long distance running. Anyhow, that practically sums up on why I am, thanks for the comment Cash. I'll probably go for it now you've posted that.

Musashi: Forgive me, I got you mixed up with OddMind (who does Kung-Fu) and I forgot you do Karate yourself.

But you're still not Samurai seeing as Karate is a civilian martial art.

Better luck next time.

Living in Japan, it becomes quickly obvious that 99% of all Japanese traditions and culture came from China. I expected Japan, I got Little China.
