I don't know if this is exactly the right place to post this, but www.retroremakes.com are holding another retro game coding competition this year, with over £4000 worth of prizes.

More details can be found HERE

Don't forget to visit the forums to see what's being made and have a chat with other coders about the competition and pretty much everything else under the sun.

The competition is non-language specific, so you can create a game in pretty much anything, be it Blitz, DarkBasic, C++ etc. You are pretty much open to re-create ANY 8 or 16bit game, although preferably not another game that has been recreated a million times before.

There's bound to be scope to remake an old fave.

Old's cool

Geek Culture would probably have been a better place for this, as it gets more traffic. Maybe a mod can move it for you.

Thanks for posting this. I'm considering entering just so I have a good reason to actually finish something.

I'd say something along the lines of "I'm going to enter and this year I'll really make an effort to finish my game on time" but I've said all that before. I think this time I'll choose to say I'm not entering and then secretly work on a project anyway.

So yes, I'm not entering..........

A note; the judges may or may not have Dx 9.0c installed. Or even Dx 8.0...so, either just hope they do or, if you somehow know how to make DarkBasic use a lower Direct X, that would work. But you'd need to tell me, because I would love to be able to enter using DBPro...

It seems rather self-explanitory. You pick any old game that was designed to run on an 8bit or 16bit machine, and redo the game using modern technology and approaches.

pacman not allowed. Rule 6ii

I really want to enter but can't think what game to do. I did Splat! in last compo which did very well, but this time I'm stumped. I'm already trying to do Caiman compo at the same time and work for a living, so time is really precious at the minute.

I'll waste some time over the weekend trwaling all the top 100 spectrum and amiga games sites and see what tickles my fancy.

@Steve J

The Nintendo Entertainment System which came out in 1985 was an 8-Bit Machine. Therefore, any game that came out for it was an 8-bit game. That includes Super Mario Brothers 1 2 and 3, Zelda 1 and 2, Metroid, etc.

The Super Nintendo came out in 1990, and that was a 16-bit machine. Any games that came out for a 16-bit machine are therefore 16-bit. That would include Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Mario RPG, Zelda 3, etc.

If you are making a game on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows ME or Windows 98, then you are making a 32-bit game, because it is running on a 32-bit Operating System.

Your game for the competition will no doubt be 32-bit, but you have to redo the same game idea from an 8-bit or 16-bit game.

Let me say that I'm 99.999999999999999% sure that would not work. There's more to DX than just a simple dll. You ought to just ask over on the retroremakes forums if using DX 9.0c would lose you any points. I really don't think they'd have a problem with it at all since TGC is one of their sponsors.

I've got me a good idea for a remake, but I'm not posting anything until I have something worth showing off.

Quote: " I'm not I'd never win so why try?"

That's a terrible attitude, man. Just do your best, and each time you do, your skills will get better. They said that every entry will receive some sort of prize.

I'm a definite maybe on this competition.

I found a cool game, Super Star Wars, but i think its a pretty ambitious title and would be pretty hard to twist to the accesibility theme too. The retro remakes competitions just seem to get better each year, even though they swer they will never do another one.

Right, I've picked my game. It's a remake of an old Spectrum game called Bounder that involves you controlling a bouncing tennis ball over a scrolling landscape. There will be a 3D version in there aswell of course, and my infamous internet highscore table.

Really don't know how I'm going to finish writing the game in time though as I'm also entering the Caiman compo aswell.

Just wondering, can this 8- or 16-bit game be an old PC game? And if the game was made in 2D, can I make it 3D, and vice versa?

Do I have to also set the resolution to: set display mode 1024,768,8?

Just want to make sure I don't cheat.

Why not read the rules.

Don't be silly about the resolution change. Run it in whatever res you want. The 8 and 16bit refers to the rule that the game must simply be a remake of an OLD game. See this thread for more details;
http://www.retroremakes.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=6578

So basically any game that was releases before 1993 should be fine. Looks like any PC game, even an old DOS one, is not really retro enough.

Making the game 3D when it was 2D should be fine, maybe offering both in same game, that's what I'm doing.

Itsays just 8 and 16 bit so best stick to those. Yes you can make it in 3d. Just make sure it includes elements that made the original stand out. So don´t have a fps with mario and hookers.
It says nothing on there site that DX9.0c will be installed? It doesn´t even say that DX 8 will be installed. Shouldn´t we be worrying about that? A shame Wario Ware was 32bit.

I think Wario Ware was 64 or 128-bit, since it runs on the Gamecube, which is either a 64-bit or 128-bit machine.

I think a better question is if they do have 9.0c installed, which flavor of the month is it? There are waaaaay too many 9.0c versions floating around and not all of them will run a DBP game.

I predict that none of the judges will have the proper 9.0c flavor.

The first Wario Ware game was for the gba wich iss 32bit If I remember rightly. I´m not sure about the bitage of a gamecube. Does it refer to the bits of the gpu or the cpu? The cpu is an IBM power something.(power pc?)That must be 32 or 64. I could look it up but I can´t be bothered. The main problem is Wario Ware isn´tan old game so I can´t just rehash my last compo entry.

@SirFire,

i saw your topic and its now locked , other than the judges being a bit gay, what exactly was the answer? cause they seem pretty strict and i dont see any point in bothering to enter if they dont have the latest directx.

[edit], ok oddbob made a topic saying that

Quote: "Would we have TGC as Sponsors if we couldn't review games that use their products for example?"

so i assume they all have the latest dx9.0c?

Yeah, it's assumed they have that at least, though that not all of them have a killer system.

For any coders going to work with .NET, beware, half of the judges are completely against it and won't install it. I was originally doing my entry with .NET, but had to stop using it because half the judges didn't have it nor want it :\

Man, I was just thinking about remaking a game that had never been remade before on Remakes.org. So I check, and sure enough, Ghostbusters is not listed as a game that is listed on the front page of the website. Great!

So then I look at the entries list for this year, and there are 4 of them listed already! There are barely any duplicate entries right now except for 4 Ghostbusters! What's a guy to do?

Read the rules and you find that three of the judges have ghostbusters on their list of remakes they'd like to see, so basically everyone is trying to get in their good books.

Worked for me on last compo. Look at STompy's fave game list and you see that my game Splat is one of his most played remakes ever! He used to play it for hours and hours! In his judging of my game he said;

Quote: "A special hug goes to Spooky for creating the best remake of Splat EVER!! If you had added an enhanced mode for sound and graphics I think you would have most certainly been in the main top 10. Of course, many other games in the competition excited me, its just that Splat is a childhood mega favourite of mine and its so bloody perfect I could kiss the guy!"

So basically writing a ghostbusters remake will probably get you a few extra points, but you would be up against some serious competition and your game would have to be brilliant.

@Spooky

I agree.

Going against 4 other Ghostbusters could be suicide! But, who knows, half of them may not even be completed at the end, so perhaps I would only be competiting against 2 other entrants.

I am planning to leave the story and gameplay the same. These are the improvements I'm planning on making:

Graphics - I will still do 2D, but I'll improve the color depth quite a bit. And I'll have some nice looking electricity effects for the beams.
Audio - I'm planning on creating 2 different versions of the ghostbuster songs on my GrooveBox. I might also remix the song "Magic" that is on the soundtrack, as it might make for good video game music.
Currency - I'll bring the currency in to the year 2006. Instead of starting out with 10,000, because of inflation, it may be more like 20,000.
Vehicles - I'd like to use newer vehicles, ranging from the Hummer to [Insert Current Vehicle Name Here]

We'll see how it goes.
