You can do this on any Apple Laptop that has SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) which is all of then since about July 2005 (including the last generation iBooks like mine). I've tried it and it works really well as long as its not on your lap... The slightest movement of the leg makes the screen flick across!!

Thats one excelent video though...

Nice! It just gets that added 'tactile' nature to it. I hope they have a shortcut to it too, for when you don't want to do the typewriter thing

thats an excellent idea for the unix style virtual desktops or boot strapping OS' or an alternative to kvmswitches.

ITs funny - I do that motion when using windows a lot... but I dont have an SMS in my windows machine Its far more satisfying though!

Would be cool. On Duo Core technology,using a Smack Top,one could run Windows,UNIX/Linux,Mac, all on the same laptop. Now,if you where doing Cross Platform development? You'd be in the ideal enviroment.

I had a little SMS app of a wheel that rotated when my ibook was rotated but this is umpteen times better. Now to go and find somewhere to download it.

This is a better site:
http://blog.medallia.com/2006/05/smacbook_pro.html

It has plenty of links in the comments about people who have made all-in-one setups... I cant remember which one of the 300+ comments was the one I used...

Finally got it working (took a while, eventually realised if I'd just done a restart when I first started all would've been good )

I'll have to fine tune some of the values in the smack.pl file before it's as good as the video but still pretty good for showing off. According to his comments the little blue ball/droplet app that's being used in the video is going to be released next week, gonna keep my eyes out for that one.

@Soapy: Glad you got it working! What mac do you use? An iBook/PowerBook or one of the new intels? It works great if you have it on a table, however I found that when its on my lap that any slight movement makes the dekstop change. I also found that after running it once you cant seem to run it again without a restart as it loads up in Software mode rather than Hardware...

Got an ibook, great little machine. I'd marry the thing if I could find a dress its size.

me too - the smaller (12" one?) - 1.33Ghz G4. I agree - they're fantastic!

Do you have any idea how to make one not sleep when you shut the lid? I heard something about connection a keyboard and mouse - do you think a bluetooth one would do?

My mom got one, but she was "too lazy to figure it out" and exchanged it with a Dell

Why make sense when you could make brownies?

When you have people who can't figure out a mac, then you know you're in trouble.

Lol - they dont even rely on more than one mouse button! Its litterally point and click!!!! And to exchange it for a Dell is just a sin beyond all sins.

There's a shareware ($9.50) app called sleepless:
http://www.alxsoft.com/mac/sleepless.html

I haven't tried it yet but would be looking for something like this when I get around to connecting an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

BE CARFEUL THOUGH
the aluminium PowerBooks have a ventilation gap for closed-lid running but ibooks don't. It would probably be okay for general short-term use but I'd keep checking it just to make sure it wasn't getting too hot.

EDIT::
There's a free widget about called iStat Nano that you could use to check the temperature.

Just open up the laptop and rip out the switch or button that turns it off when you shut the monitor.

@Soapy - cheers for the link. I'll look into that. As for ventilation, there is a vent on the side and one at the back but I dont think there is one on top. I use iStat Pro (or nano... I think its pro) anyway. Very usefull tool!

@Merranvo - crude but effective!
