Hi, I have an asus P5S800-VM and I want to update the BIOS, I've downloaded the new 1020 bios .rom file so I can update from 0170 (outdated or what!) but when I try to update the BIOS from the rom it says the model of the bios image is different to the bios rom currently present, even though the model on both the bios rom info and bios image info both have mode P5S800-VM.
Please help, it will be greatly appriciated.

Firstly - if its telling you its the wrong one then;
1) You're lucky it didn't just try
2) Its probably the wrong one

Secondly - why are you upgrading? Do you NEED to or do you just WANT to? Unless you know what you're doing, a BIOS upgrade can write off a motherboard so its only best to do it if you NEED to.

believe me avoid all bios updates if possible, one machine here needed an upgrade so that it could work with a faster processor, used the update thru windows method, big mistake, it wouldn't write the image properly, it kept on claiming that it couldn't complete it, and it completely trashed the board

Flashing with most modern boards is pretty safe. Many have a sepearate "mini bios" that will load when the main bios is bad and will load an image from disk and flash it. If your motherboard has one of those then as long as you can get a good image you will be fine.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

SO true!

My first motherboard had a feature where if you screwed a bios upgrade you could hold something like Ctrl+Alt+F11 on a PS2 keyboard and if you were lucky and there was a cow chasing a spoon around the moon, you might just get it to try to read a file called something like BIOS.rom off a FAT formatted flopppy dist in drive A...

Are you sure your motherboard wont do HT without an upgrade?! seems funny it requires an upgrade...

I've never had any problems updating any BIOS, the trick is to read the instructions throughly and make damn sure you have the right file. Also make damn sure that you don't turn off your PC while it's in progress or you're pretty much stuffed. I've got a backup PSU on my system so I'm pretty safe from that. If the software is telling you there is something wrong, don't try and override it, there are safey checks in place with some programs to prevent user error. If in doubt e-mail your motherboards manufacturer and ensure you have the right file.

I love asrock for one reason... You can actually update the BIOS thru windows Oh yeaa. ANd btw, do not update bios unless it is a definit requirement because its such a pain and if it doesnt work you are screwed and need a new mobo.. Or you can actually buy the BIOS flash mem chip but i forgot where (hard to get).

Gigabyte offers the same thing, and a live download service. I still prefere using DOS and a bootable Floppy disk, means there's no chance of something interfearing with the process.
