I have a Satellite CS100 Toshiba laptop running windows 98. It is fairly old (90Mgz) but usable. I got it from a scholl that was getting rid of it. The problem with it is, it hasn't got proper drivers on it! This s okay for everything but the battery! I don't know when its going to be fully charged all die on me! I have been unsuccesful in finding a driver for it on the internet (So yes I have used google!) but I was wondering if it were possible to re-install Windows 98 on it? It only has a floppy disk drive (The 3.5" disks) but I have got an external floppy drive cabale of storing 120MB. So can anyone help me!
Thanks!

If you can get Windows98 onto the laptop then you should be jamming, however 98 is not ideal for USB devices like external floppies, besides 98se is about 240mb IIRC.

So, get an RS232 cable and a copy of Laplink (freeware). This will let you link up to your main PC, and transfer files directly.

This is old school stuff, but your dealing with an old-school computer (a pun, I made another pun!). Once you have 98se installed, just boot into DOS and run that setup file.

But, you do still need drivers, so investigate sites like Driverguide.com for as many drivers as you can get before you start, then you can laplink them as well.

Your battery, well take it out of the laptop and throw it down the street. It's probably 10 years old, there's nothing it can do for the laptop now, resign yourself to the fact that...

a) You can only use the laptop when it's plugged in.
b) If someone trips on the power lead the laptop will shut down, all the battery could do is act as a non-reliable powersaver.
c) The laptop is probably so ugly that you wouldn't want to be seen in public with it anyway.

Doesn't Windows 98 come with drivers?

An RS232 cable is usually a lot like an old style printer cable, 24 or 9 pin connections each side, and they hook up to the RS232 port, which is the 24-pin D connection that some people decided were no longer necessary. You laptop will have this port, and hopefully your PC too as long as it's not a brand new Dell...

What about Windows 95? Would that be better?

This ones 9-pin, you should be able to get one at a decent PC store.

98se's drivers are often very lacking, the important stuff will need drivers, namely you on-board video, and your on-board sound - the laptop is limited unless you have the drivers for these, luckily they can usually be found quite easily as they're common. Those are really the only drivers that might hold you back, not so much finding them, but identifying them.

Do a google search for your laptop and gather as much info as you can, because you may end up looking for forum threads through google, so using model numbers can help filter out the chaff.

If you're talking about the CS100, here is a link to files and documentation:

Ahh!

I have a Toshiba Satelite, I'm sure it's the same style, but not sure what model it is. I did a search and it looks exactly like a CS110, not sure if it'd help for me to investigate it, see if I can find out any details or drivers - seems that you have the whole shebang with Jerbil's link though. Actually I'm probably missing drivers too... Cheers Jerbil .

Hehe, I use it for playing CD's and basic typing - there truly is no such thing as a useless laptop .

I sell Toshiba laptops at work (amongst others), the newer ones... to be honest, at least 70% of the ones we've sold since I've had this job have been returned. Same with the Compaqs. They always break. There's my two-cents, hehe

Hello everyone!
I am just about to purchase the laplink cable, but was wondering if anyone knew how to re-install windows 95 over it? A guide or some simple instructions?
