I realize there are a ton of competitions going on right now, but I was thinking of setting up one like the DB Coding Callenge and the 3d modelling competition, where the object is to develop music to use for games. At the end of each set of time, people vote on their favorite and the winner picks out the next theme (such as RPG battle and FPS boss sequences, etc). Then I, or someone else, can set up a site where this music is available for people to use in games (with permission of the authors, of course).
Of all the things you can find, it would be nice to have a good resource of royalty free, ready to use gaming music with a wide variety to pick from.
But what do you guys think?

Me and Aaron did this once, turn out was ok, the quality of the songs that were in it were awesome except for one unnameable one which was so awful I went outside and killed a nun just so her screams would drown out the essence of that song in my head.

Yes, it was on this site, RGT, and a few other indy dev communities. I still have the entrys and judging files on a disc somewhere. I'll look for it later.

I don't know if i'd enter a compo but I'd be open to doing some music. maybe helping others with their music if they had no access to good equipment or mixing/mastering phases. just a thought.

Game music isn't as easy to judge as "real" music, and, in fact, good game music makes for bad listening music. Might give it a shot, tho'.

I wouldn't enter, because I suck at music. However, If I was any good at it, I'd enter. It does sound like fun.

How about Nobuo Uematsu? I listen to game music all the time. Maybe I'm just weird.

I mostly just figured that this is a good way to make a rescource of free game music for people to use, offering a wide variety. And I figured that to compose a music sequence for a game doesn't take much more time than to make a model for the 3d challenge, or a good code snippet for the coding challenge.

Not always. Mostly, yes, but I've heard some game music that actually sounds pretty good just for listening (e.g. some of the final fantasy and halo tracks, and I even get a kick out of the orchestrations for Super Smash Bros.)

If we did do this, though, it would probably be under the Game Theory and Design area. I also need some help figuring out some good rules. Here a few I can think of.
1)File must be submitted in either midi or mp3 format.
2)One entry per person per competition.
3)You must, and can only, submit your own work.
4)You must have it your entry in before the deadline.
5)Please don't submit the same song for multiple competitions.

Pretty obvious, but:

6) you must start your entry after the start date?

That's fine. If you have something like cakewalk, you can play around with the notes and rhythmes all that you want, and you don't need to know how to play the instruments. Just as long as you understand how to read a page of music and know what a note is.

As for the rest of the rules, I can just copy and paste a lot of them from the 3d callenge area. About two week sounds like enough time to write something, right?

Two weeks is plenty.

But why "3d challenge area"?

Cakewalk works well. You can also find other useful tools (check out audacity, or something like that).
I made the competition thread here

I've always urged for a game music forum, but it hasn't come quite yet for there is a bit of lack of music postings to warrant an entire board. I'd definitly support the creation of a music compo, or a thread or two for users to just post their work.

If more users start e-mailing Rich and it can be seen as a necessity to the community, I'm sure it'd come.

I might enter if there was a compo, but I'd want to see really strict judging criteria. Like the Hawkster said, there are different requirements for game music to real music. If we write Themes they've got to be catchy and a good listen, but if we write in-game music, they've got to sit nicely in the background and create an atmosphere without grabbing attention (hense not worth listening to).

I would be miffed if I spent 5 hours writing background music and got told it was "uneventful" or 5 hours writing theme music and told it was too "distracting".

@fallout: If you check out the comp thread I posted in Game Design, you can see how it would work out. And remember, like the 3d challenge, it's not much of a comp anyways. It's more of a good way for people to try something new, practice at doing it well, and make a good rescource for the community, being named winner of the week is just a small incentive to get people interested. People love competition.

Maybe if it was designed around "make some music like the [insert game title] soundtrack"? That way it's a lot more fair for the listeners, composers, and judges.

I'm thinking good ideas for later themes would be: "battle sequence for old war game (like Call of Duty)", or "Boss sequence for an RPG", etc.

What use is that?

The music equivalent to "one arm/eye/other appendage tied behind his back" is working without any vst/vsti

Good point. I'll try and tie my back behind my back instead. I'll be spending so long trying to work out how to do it, I'll miss the compo all together.

I never have time to do music. I spend too long making the graphics for my games.

Music

I don't think I've ever made music for a project.

Edit: Oh I did make a commercial game music once. Predator 2 music on the Amiga. Then when they asked for it, I changed my mind, and used it in an Amos project.

I need Live and Let Die Remix by the way for my Greyhound Racing Game (James Bond) , anyone interested?

It's been a week since I started the Competition thread under Game Theory and Design, and there is still a week and a half left in the first round. Just givin those who may be interested the heads up.
The theme for the first round is text adventure music (basically a simple fantasy theme). It ends June 21.

Sorry for the boot...but to allow more time for others to try the first round, I'm extending the time to June 28 for it to end.
