http://www.cakewalk.com

large selection of stuff there

My wife uses mac and has garage band which I messed around with. seems to be geared towards looping/tracking/recording. The equiv product from cakewalk for windows would be SONAR Home Studio 4 XL which I have been using for about a month - omg.

If asked to compare, I'd say HS blows GB out of the water, but thats just mho. I think the cw site wanted $229.00 for hs4xl but I went online and got it from guitar center for $159.00. If youre doing looping youll want xl since it includes a load of samples. If you're doing tracking (audio/midi) then you can save a few dollars and skip the xl bit and just get sonar hs 4.

I am doing strictly Audio tracking (and maybe midi too) but I am not intersted in loops etc so just going on that I found HS4XL perfect for me. Cake has a ton of packages geared towards certain tasks so you may not even want anything in the HS family - read up on their site.

But as with anything, research everything before you buy anything

theres a pretty neat recording app called audocity which is free
a bit simple, but it suits me and allows for layering.
do a google.

Ableton Live 5 sounds like what you're looking for - but beware, it's not some piddily ejay proggy, it's a full on DAW and loop based sequencer with full VST/VSTi support. Blows garageband out of the water, as well.

the easiest thing to use to me is acoustica mp3 audio mixer costs like $20 but its not very powerful and no sound editing except for pan and volume

protools 5 is free for mac os 9 and win98se
there are heaps of software for pcs when it comes to audio.

cubase / protools / soundforge being the larger monolithic monsters that if professional
are worth investing in.

Go with a ejay product, then, if all you want is to be able to arrange premade loops together.

yep, ejay, acid, cakewalk, etc etc can be used to do loops like GB - but GB also lets you line-in instruments and record tracks as well. This is what Cakewalk SONAR Home Studio 4 XL does as well as unlimited midi, and looping etc. Its the complete package. If you want simple drag and drop looping and dont plan to any audio/midi tracking then EJay might be what you want and the packages are very inexpensive. Not to mention there is a plethora of web resources for looping, just have research session with google.

they are usually preloaded with samples/loops parts, that you string together as a start. Then you can buy and/or download other libraries of samples/loops and build your arsenal.

I noticed that in general youre allergic to google - take a pill and go
