With the spread of communication's technology such as landlines, mobile telephones, and computer networks, it is easier then ever before to share information, and idea's. When you compare the sheer amount of resources available to any person to, it vastly drawfs that of past decades. While library's where common place, it's a slow process to move books around, and often not very easy to find the book you require in the first place. Information was limited to the people you knew, and the books you could get your hands on, followed by radio and television, which of cause were vastly inferior to todays standards in regards to choice and availability.

Today of cause there's the Internet, a free world with millions of forums, billions of e-mail accounts, and heaven knows how many web pages. Often to find out something you can simply use a search engine.

So my question is, with technology and communications so limited at the turn of the last century, and information so hard to come by to the common working man or woman, has this greatly affected the way we think of ourselves, and of our lives? Is such wide spread communication a blessing or a curse? Are we truly all the richer for being exposed to so many idea's, or are our idea's influenced so much that our thoughts are truly not our own? Are we now spoiled children who expect too much? How do you think you would get on, if you where suddenly forced into life at the turn of last century? Finally have we stopped trying to find any real meaning within our lives, or has it simply become easier to distract ourselves from thinking about it with various entertainments and distractions?

Well I have my answer. Clearly it's much easier to obay your first knee jurk reaction, then to actually consider thinking. Clearly it's eaiser to distract yourself with jokes, pretty pictures, TV, and games. That's the action of a spoilt child. Seriousally, you give a spoilt child something to think about, and it's first reaction is "don't wanna, wanna sweety". Clearly despite the amount of information you've been given access too, it's put to almost no use at all.

We're extremly fortunate (imo) to live in an age where information can be freely accessed, and passed down with ease. You have no clue how much knowledge and information could have been lost forever back in the day if not for select individuals who preserved it. I am not anti-technology, but I don't think we should ever lose touch with our past or with nature. Yes, I think with the creation of the internet, we have it xxxxxx times better then people in the past 2 centuries. Much, much better.

I'm not gonna be the nagging parent who says "Don't take it for granted, because when I was a lad..." etc because it's really hard for some people to care how others used to live.

And why does there always have to be a "meaning" to life? Maybe we just live to experiance different things, then die, then...something else. Meh.

As long as you always keep an open mind to everything, you'll survive life.

@Dorks with the shirts: I commend you on your maturity level.

No. Mankind is doomed by itself and the nature of what it does. But I just go along with the ride, no point trying to stop what cant be stopped. One person can change the lives of many, but the many can easily change the life of one, causing all that was learned, to be un-done, and thus, this is why humanity is doomed.

Wii rules.

That doesn't quite answer the "humanity is doomed?" question. : /

I don't see a clear purpose in your messages. I am going to tell you in a joking matter that the answer to the ultimate question of the meaning of life is 42, simply because I have found my own fulfillment in my life and am taking this opportunity to enjoy the fact that I have fulfillment. And no, the fulfillment is not Douglas Adams books. Do you feel like you have meaning in your life?

The first post's purpose was to establish a set of questions for people to think about.

No I can't say I have any singular meaning in my life. It's made up of many little purposes. My primary is to become a published author, because I beleive that imagination is my true gift. I live from day to day by working on many little creative projects because that forces me to learn new things. I have no religous beleive, before I tend to think that's just a cop out. "An, I can't think of anything to live for on my own, and I live merely because of instict, and because I don't think about it at all." So I'll make up something and beleive in that instead. So my meanings are a little fame, to share my idea's, and to learn as much as I'm able too.

Why was Religion such a big thing in the dark ages? Because life for most people was hard, there was not much to do recreationally, not much avaliable in terms of self advancement or fulfillment, not alot of ways to express your opinion...the only thing people clung on in their dark hopeless lives was religion. People made themselves feel better by building giant Cathedrals and going on crusades to pwn people an opposing faith.

With today's (mostly) freedom of speech, general cultural acceptance, career opportunities, entertainment options, and advanced forms of communication, people realize that they don't need religion in their lives...which is why the church is fading. I think everyone needs *some* spirituality in their lives though, which does not mean devoting yourself to a specific religion, god, or set of rules.

I believe in god, though I am not a part of any specific religion. It's ridicules how some people say "I will not marry someone if they are not Christian" etc because they really don't know what they're missing.

thats really deep!

my thoughts are; because of my own faith i know what the true meaning of life is.

but regarding the internet & technology,we have so much comfort in our homes, cars & even workplaces thanks to air conditioners, stereos, satelite tv but i am constanly hearing of people in the news stating that they have never been soo lonely.
suecides seem to be on the rise.

so i guess technology is good in someways but maybe we need to return to a more simpler existance where we actually know our neighbors names & socialize more with them, physically rather than electronically.

The meaning of life is a user-defined variable.

you've presented your argument as though you've already decided that the meaning of life is to gather information. what if it turns out its about farting in lifts for kicks?

I don't have a sig, live with it.

I'll state it again, The meaning of life is a user-defined variable.

I'll be damned if someone else is going to tell me what the meaning of my life is.
