Just encode the ROM to check for certain licence key numbers.
If the PS3 is a true linux version, and that linux version isn't so weird that it's software won't run on a PC, then I think this is great news. Hopefully more manufactures will start developing games for the linux platform. It would be nice to seen linux become larger in peoples homes.
As for the PS3 replacing a PC in most peoples homes. I doubt it, the PC has an image that the Playstation doesn't. Also the PC is builderable by anyone, there's massive manufacturer support for it, and a very wide range of products. The only way sony could compete is to allow any manufacturer to build a PS3 out of sperate parts. The reason PC out does Apple, is because like sony, they licence everything so closely it's easier for manufactures to make peices for PC's.
It might replace Media Center PC's however, the sort of people who by Windows XP Media Center PC's, are the sort of people who just want to switch on and play, I doubt they are going to use it for much else.
