Quote: "Besides defending the PS3, Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular he said the Linux-based operating system on the console's hard drive will have enough processing power and non-gaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft's Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC.""

Well I will bet that linux development sky rockets, even if this doesn't take over the PC, games and apps for surely will be developed for it, who knows maybe one day people will be like "sorry I didn't make a windows version of <insert popular game here>"(I doubt it)

all use a unix/linux variant, sony isn't the first and since they had root kits in music cd's and crappy protection in DVD players I have shunned away from there instruments of mass distraction.

I probably wont buy a ps3 or a xbox 360. I don't have the time or the inclination, I have monster computers that waste them for adaptability and performance.

The 360 and PS3 are awesome...

...advertisements for the WII .

Seriously M$ and $ony are gonna get owned, then rented out, then owned again by the WII.

Seriously, the PS3 and 360 were gonna be vital purchases, like deciding which one to get first, well it'll be the one that ends up the cheapest on the pre-owned games front.

Thought this was interesting. Especially the bit about lowering the PS3 CPU speed.

i dought very much they will replace a pc,if anyone wants a computer just foir games then cosoles will be great, but there upgrade options are limited and expensive.
pc's will always be the home leader, they said many great things about the xbox and ps2...and all they were were consoles...nothing more.

Yeah PC's can and will always adapt - not to say there's that much that can be done with the current technology speed wise, but more with custom chips. Best example would be the physics processors which will become more and more standard over the next couple of years just as 3D cards did.

For me the thing is comfort though - I just don't enjoy PC games as much as slouching on the couch with a controller in my hand.

I don't see how consoles can work as pcs. How will they collect license fees if the console has an OS that will run any program?

Just encode the ROM to check for certain licence key numbers.

If the PS3 is a true linux version, and that linux version isn't so weird that it's software won't run on a PC, then I think this is great news. Hopefully more manufactures will start developing games for the linux platform. It would be nice to seen linux become larger in peoples homes.

As for the PS3 replacing a PC in most peoples homes. I doubt it, the PC has an image that the Playstation doesn't. Also the PC is builderable by anyone, there's massive manufacturer support for it, and a very wide range of products. The only way sony could compete is to allow any manufacturer to build a PS3 out of sperate parts. The reason PC out does Apple, is because like sony, they licence everything so closely it's easier for manufactures to make peices for PC's.

It might replace Media Center PC's however, the sort of people who by Windows XP Media Center PC's, are the sort of people who just want to switch on and play, I doubt they are going to use it for much else.

Let me see if I interpret this correctly...

The PS3 sucks, they know it sucks, and are now trying to make up for it by adding an OS which will probally be so limited that you can't do anything.

Great Plan.

Adding an OS to try to increase the sales of the product.
Basically means they are getting owned somehow, they need something to boost them and they choose an OS.

Now given that sony is managing the os, you can assume they probally will be selling the software for it as well. How far they develope that is yet to be seen... what this means is that your PS3 won't really have a usable OS, you can't go to the store and pick out a Win/Mac program and run it. You might special SONYSOFT...

I do admit, this is all infered, but think about the patterns of buisness before contradicting what I predict.

Well, I'm hoping it will do wireless streaming. I've currently got a DVD player that will play all the major formats and will also stream from a USB drive or over a wireless link (tis nice). Nice to all be in one box.

Cheers

I don't know about you guys, but I don't want a PC from my console. When I buy a console I want to play games. The 360 is already dangerously close to PC-like--- I don't want to have instant messenger, a web browser, MP3 player etc--- I just want the games!

I agree with Jeku. When I buy a console, I buy it as a gaming platform.

Don't need them to act like PCs or take over as MP3 players, etc.

I have a PC to use as a PC!

(Can you imagine 100 office workers typing away on their PS3s?)

Personally I think the Wii (ARRG!!! Revolution was a better name!) may bring interesting gameplay elements that are not currently possible using the PC.

And maybe we'll finally get some Light-Gun games!

Exact reason why I bought a DS over the PSP (and give all my dormies hell when they talk about it ).

Why do you need all that crap on a console anyway? What's the point?

*Shrug* I'm not getting a PS3 or XBox 360 - Maybe a Wii, but certainly not the others - They're overkill.

How much is the PS3 going to cost again? How much are games for the PS3 going to cost? Technically if you consider the cost of a television and speakers, it's insane. PC developments continue to keep graphics technology above those of consoles, which is the big deal here. That and price you know, if you're going to spend however much for a PS3, just build a nice computer.

I love the fact that i can plug my mp3 player into my 360 and play any of my music while blasting away in Ghost Recon, or rocketing around NYC in Project Gotham.

That's what a Sterio is for, or your PC...
Surely you've got better speakers on your PC than your TV has!?

As much as i love my Creative 3 piece PC speaker setup with my lovely bass, my 6.1 surround sound system by far surpasses it

But i cant control my mp3 from the couch if its ran directly through my reciever, i can however if it goes into the 360, because of the media remote. Plus the volume level of the music is lowered and raised automaticaly by the 360 depending what im doing, for example, if its a cutscene it will lower the volume for me so i can hear whats going on.

I dont see the inter-connectivity a neccessity, i wouldnt NOT by a system just because i cant play my mp3 through it, but its a nice feature to have.
