Japanese is just English backwards. Breathe in as you talk and you'll be fine.

anata wa nihongo o dewa hanashimasen deshi-ta ka?

It boggles me how they expect people to learn Japanese without starting with hiragana.

[edit]What? It picked up bad language in my romaji? (ignore the dash I stuck in there)

Well, for some reason programs like Rosetta Stone prefer if you learn how to speak it before writing. =/

Man that would drive me insane. The writing bit is a necessity since consonants and vowels are treated the same. How would you explain words like "iie" "kiite" or even "konnichiwa"?

I loved studying Japanese in University--- I agree that the hirigana is important to learn. Not like it's that difficult.

But when I was studying Danish the Rosetta Stone way was the best--- speak before writing.

Heh heh okay. I had to be certain, because when I searched Kanjidict to double check my vocab it also came up with

"- conversation to liven up a party
- performance to liven up a bar
- snack served with drinks"
