If so, what brand and what dpi does it process? Any problems? Problem free?

I'm needing a new keyboard and mouse. I have a logitech wireless kb + mouse combo (ball mouse) which is about 5 years old (or more) and is starting to not be pixel precise. I prefer ball mice over optical but everything I see out there in kb+mouse combo wireless is Optical! I may have to go with optical but wanted some opinions

thanks

You prefer ball mice over optical mice. I'm sorry man. I'm so sorry. I don't think we can help you . It's probably genetic.

ha ha funny.

so if I got a fair logitech kb+mouse (opt) with a 800 dpi resolution it should be fine for gaming?

I had an optical mouse at work and it would freak out occasionally and the cursor would end up in one of the corners of the screen - cant have that during a frag fest online if you follow

I last used ball mice years ago. Do they still make them!

Optical mice are so much better and more accurate and they don't collect fluff on the rollers.

Newest type of mice are laser mice and I am currently using an Advent wireless laser mouse and it's the cats whiskers.

The only problem I have found with wireless mice is that the pointer sometimes wanders around the screen when the mouse is stationery.

Ditch your balls and get an optical - that's an order.

Boo!

Micro Innovations PD450P, not sure but I believe it to be 800dpi.

Very smooth precise movement, but lately the scrollwheel has developed jerky scrolling. It's about 3 years old. From my experience optical mice do not like bright colors underneath them and seems to cause the cursor to wander or jump, use dark surface for best results.

I've seen some optical "gaming" mice online with 2000dpi resolution, that seems like insane overkill... I mean you could breath on the thing and it would move.

I use an optical mouse, info? How the hell should I know, to me its just a mouse Its pretty good, however my desk is metal with nice holes it, so I'm screwed if I didn't have a mouse mat Its fast and it doesn't screw me over so its satifying, it is 3 years old and still works like a charm. The name it says on the bottom is;

Xtensions XM 151 Optical scroll mouse, I looked on their website but they no longer sell it, however they had some other nice looking mice on there (800dpi);

http://www.x-tensions.net/products.php?lang=en&view=areas&pb_id=4

Hope that is of some help. My one seems of good quality and performs well with my games, I can get good shots on Unreal Tourn with it.

I use a Logitech G7 Gaming mouse. It uses a laser for it's optics. It's 2000 dpi, and adjustable on the fly. It's wireless, and the batteries are LI-ION batteries. They can be hot swapped without the fear of memory lock. I love it, I bought my refurb for 1/4 the price of retail from a computer wholesaler on ebay.

Join the darkside like me and use a Microsoft optical trackball It's just fine for me, and I used it when playing Jedi Knight II - many's the person I force-pushed off high ledges with that thing.

Normal people need not apply, of course.

I use an 800dpi, unbranded 5 button, wheelled mouse from eBay, it's unbranded, wireless, rechargeable with cradle, and a 50 meter range. Cost me all of £12 at the time, including postage. It's very accurate, I can get pixel level accuracy, and it's great for games.

There is nothing wrong with Opitcal, and it never needs cleaning unlike ball mice. I didn't want to change originally, but then I came to the conclusion, that I'm only ever going to the thing on my wooden desk or computer desk, so what does it matter if it doesn't read off glass or overly reflective surfaces?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-800-dpi-Wireless-Optical-Mouse-Rechargeable-NEW_W0QQitemZ9741763696QQcategoryZ96888QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If you want to bid on one.

It says shipped from hongkong I know, but I bought from the same seller, it took about 2 weeks to arrive, but that's a risk with any ebay seller even if they are in the UK.

Just got myself a Keysonic laser mouse 1600dpi
It even reads on a reflective surface eg. glass

http://www.anitec.ca/product/5077/keysonic_warp_aluminum_laser_mouse/
http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_3190.html

The problem in changing from ball to optical is that when reaching the end of the mat, i tend to lift the mouse up to place it back in the middle. But doing so will result in the mouse reading the upward movement. Otherwise it is pretty comfortable, and as a plus the wheel is lit with a blue LED.

Logitech MX1000 laser wireless mouse with li-on battery. This is
more like a battle tank than a mouse. Note that the battery is
not user replaceable, but should last several years.

You need to get a laser mouse, and yes there is a diferts between obptical and a laser mouse. A laser is a lot more acuret. I sujest the Razer Copperhead, I am going to get one. The Razer Copperhead has a dpi of 2000.

What is it with all this glowing crap on PC's and PC periferials these days? It's getting very boring. Plus it NEVER looks as good as the photographs.

It all started when the ricers got computers.

What's a ricer you ask? It's one of those kids who takes a Japanese car and takes off the suspension, puts plastic skirting around the bottom, places the tail section from a C-130 aircraft on the back, spends $8000 on rims, sups up the 100hp 4-cylinder engine to 120hp, places an extremely oversized tailpipe extension on the rear, and lights the whole car up with enough neon lighting to put Los Vegas to shame.

Funny thing is, My V8 always leaves them at the starting line coughing on dust.

Best mouse mat I've every used for my MX700 is the one I'm currently using.

I'm not sure if everyone around the world has them, but you know those Green Material bags you shop with instead of plastic bags? They have that hard bit of plastic in the bottom to keep it square...
That - It's perfect.

The way an optical mouse works is by sampling the 'image' (interference pattern) it picks up from the laser - So, by having a very irregular pattern (ever-so-slightly rough surface) that isn't shiny is the best solution.

I've never ever had wandering cursor syndrome with my optical mouse... Even when I was using the worste mouse mat (Shiny, polished, pure white desktop), the only problem was with accuracy... Never wandering

For those that don't have those green bags - In your Sport Bags (Footy Bags, etc), the black bit of plastic in the bottom to keep it square - Same stuff!
The Green bag ones are best, though, as they are the perfect mouse-mat size

Hope it helps you out.

Oh, and;

Not quite true...
If you look closely at your lazer's receiver and the laser itself, there is dust build up... If you clean it occasionally with a lint-free cloth, you'll notice a MASSIVE increase in accuracy with your mouse

I use a Razer DiamondBack. It's an optical, extremely high sensitivity, but without all the stupid buttons on it you never use. I love it because its (a) damned fast and (b) has long slender buttons, making it really comfortable for long periods of use.

It runs on a Razer Pro steel mouse pad (nice white one, but I have a black one too). I like these pads, you can flip them over - smooth control one side, fast speed the other. I rarely flip mine though.

In the left of the pic is my keyboard, a Raptor Pro Gaming. Very very comfortable, extremely responsive, and swapable keys. Unlike most keyboards you can really bash this one around, and it detects many key presses at once. I also just love it. Next to an Apple Pro, it's the best keyboard I've ever used.

Cheers,

Rich

Laser mice rule. You don't even need a good one.
Here's one that came with my old Gateway in 2001. It's still really accurate, and the cursor only recently (still very rarely) started wandering around, which leads me to believe that I should clean the mouse and mousepad for the first time soon.

My keyboard is even 1337er (indulge), it's an old Hewlett-Packard SK-2505. It came with an HP we bought in 1996 or 97. It has all the media controls plus program shortcut buttons you can customize, and if you lost the original drivers or it isn't being compatible with XP there's always the drivers I use that were written by some guy living in his mom's basement.

In all seriousness, I type the fastest on this old keyboard, perfect resistance while still retaining a glidy feel.

I miss my old keyboard
it was perfect for typing and had the nifty media player buttons at top but not too many buttons(wasn't overly massive) but I gave it away cause I had a different keyboard which looked better(should've tried it first) and so then I plugged it in(usb I hate for keyboard and even mice) everything seemed fine, found the serial number and everyhing to get the driver, googled it and voila! a website with the sad message "this keyboard is no longer in production"(or something like that) and thats it, no old driver or anything, and never found the driver(plus it gave a rather annoying bios message of keyboard error, so it didn't work until windows booted completely so no F8->safe mode) so now I have this keyboard without fancy buttons, just volume and hibernate key

and thats how I learned to bake apple pie

btw
I still use roller mice, though I wish I had an optical(the one I have uses battery's(no recharge) like fat ladies eat pie)

has nothing to do with the mouse, just tell your friend to adjust the mouse settings in windows.

The best optical mice for their price I've used are Logitech. Older, cheaper ones used to give me trouble with games requiring fast movement, but no more these days.

Optical is great but I'd steer clear of wireless mice and keyboards. They're not as responsive as a wired keyboard or mouse especially for fast paced games and they require charging or worse batteries which are a pain.

I've got a Logitech wireless mouse with the invisible laser (or optical, not sure which, but you can't see the light.) It works great, and the batteries last a good six months or more. It's very responsive, easy to use, and comfortable.

Wireless is cool, just don't get Dell wireless keyboards and mice that come with their computers. My friend's has this quirk where if you click and drag, it won't let go of the click unless you click again.
