Hey guys,

I have a headphone jack in the front on my pc that I use a lot. Mostly I switch it between my headphones and speakers. However all of the sudden last night as I pluged in my headphones the right side doesnt produce any sound. I've tried other headphones and speakers and get the same results, no right speaker. I've also tried diffrent audio programs (itunes, wmp, real) and gone through all my sound settings. Any ideas?

My headphone jack has never worked in 10 years of different computers. You are lucky. I have to plug headphones into my rear speaker socket.

Pincho, that's because the plugs from the Case's Jacks aren't plugged into your MoBo/Sound Card

Oh, damn...
I'll keep that in mind from now on.

I didn't realize swapping out my speakers for head phones could cause that! Eek!

you can plug/unplug speakers/headphones while the pc is on just mute the in/out channels in the audio settings beforehand, and in the case of connecting/disconnecting speakers, make sure the speakers are powered down first

-mute
-power down
-disconnect

-reconnect
-power up
-un mute

try moving the jack plug slightly in the connector, it's possibly a bad contact between the plug and socket so pulling the plug out a little or pushing it in harder might do the trick.

i think thats more likely, i mean whats the point of even allowing plug n play (ie dont reboot) if you have to!!!

No, my case doesn't have a headphone socket, I meant my CD player has a head phone socket. I have had 3 CD players but the headphone socket has never worked.

is the cdrom capable of playing audio cds thru the system speakers?
have you ever connected the audio cable from the sound card to the cdrom drive?

The only thing you can damage is your speakers through a sound surge. So all you have to do is stop sound from reaching the speakers.

yes, or in the audio settings app, either one will do.
when you mute you are stopping the hardware from sending the audio signals to the speaker's amplifier. Amping is the root of potential disaster so by muting you are avoiding disaster, as it were.
