The question is, will this create a better OS?
Or, one fraught with bad OSness...

'tis good that he's putting his countless billions to a very good cause, though!

With Bill stepping down, it wont mean that Microsoft will all of a sudden change... They're doing so damned well, why would they?

I suppose we'll have to stop knocking on him now that he's focusing on charity . Interesting.

He just wants to monopolise the charity market, now.

I was playing poker with some friends when this story came on CNN. And in all-seriousness my friend goes "If I were him, I woulda retired 30 years ago."

But yeah ive got nothign against Gates, blaming him for security holes in windows is like blaming Bush for holes in levies in New Orleans. I think hes had a wonderful career and i admire him for giving so much to charity. And i agree that i dont think microsoft is going to change a whole lot when hes gone.

*puts on tinfoil hat*

I think this is a publicity stunt to raise the approval rating of Microsoft, and hence improve sales of Vista.

Very funny. In reality about the same time as the release of the obvious SP1 to fix all the bugs. When I say "all", obviously I mean the massive amount of obvious bugs. SP2 will fix the more serious bugs. Which is to say none of the ones that will cripple your bank account or network That will be fixed in emergency patches that they pull out of their a**e in 2010.

Cheers

Actually, Bill and Melinda Gates have donated over 20 billion dollars to charity, so he's been quite the philanthropist for a long time.

I read that 1 in 10 people that get polo get their cure paid for by him. Really great man if I say so myself.

Gates for President?

Do you mean the disease Polio or are all these people infected with a desire to get up on a horse and whack a ball with a mallet. Perhaps they can't help but buy Ralph Loren stuff.

Actually the problems people endure in Windows is not due to Billy, but the actual people that made it.

Its good to know that there are big rich billionaire corporation guys giving up their job as CEO to fund them selves a Charity, god on ya Bill

No, it's so that the share price doesn't plunge by making a short-timed announcement. If he said he was retiring tomorrow, the stock market would want to protect themselves against him selling a huge chunk of shares and the price would plummet in minutes.

if Bill Gates were president we wouldn't have to worry about sex scandals, look at his haircut!(zing.) Also, there are always going to be problems with windows. No one can make a perfect operating system. To ensure a flawless windows experience, you'd probably have to know quite a bit of low level code before touching anything. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. something tells me that none of us are on linux.

at least if Bill Gates was president, you'd have a smart president, and as he is leading a charity and supplies money into health, I'm sure he'd do better than Bush who has an Oil company, heck even if he still had Microsoft in his rule, it wouldn't make any sense what so ever to raid countries for hard drives.

Conspiracy Theorists would suggest that the next war will be won through Weapons Of Mass Disruption. That is, scrambling signals, destroying data and generally disrupting communication channels and power sources.

So maybe Bill is your man.

Cool. That'll be less for me to worry about. He has enough to do almost all of it.

In any case I would have sold out and retired long ago if I was him

sound locical except for a few things.
a) computer nerds would be to busy looking at porn.
b) and if they did what would they do?
c) probably the highest percentage of people on earth who hate gates are computer nerds.
