I'd suggest an ambience mic (unidirectional) to pick up the atmosphere along with a directional cartoid mic for the actual talking bit.

Go with what Hawkeye said, if you don't, then you may as well not do it... conference mics like that won't work entirely too well depending on how far the people are and how much ambient noise there is.

"One World, One Web, One Program" -Microsoft ad.
"Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer"(One People, One Kingdom, One Leader)-Adolf Hitler.

Somehow I doubt you'll get everything you want for anything less than 500$.

If you want good, or even reasonable quality, you're going to have to invest in some expensive gear. Even then, if you don't know a lot about recording, it's very probable that you'll get a bad sound.

If you want to record from a distance, you're potentially looking at directional mics and amplification kit. I would suggest perhaps having a look around here http://www.soundprofessionals.com

When I picked up my recording gear from them they had a forum where I asked all my questions in. If its still there, drop by and tell them your problem and they'll suggest some kit. They also make their own mics, so they'll be good value.

youll need telescreens >

I also suggest an ambient mic like the kind they place in theatres at the cieling for concerts and stuff. They are fairly small depending on what kind you get but that should do it for you.

If $100 is your limit you have a problem. a decent mic like say a Shure sm57 can go $120 on sale. Those shows even though they are "live" usually have a boom operator or two for alot of the scenes or a ton of mics. You may consider, if you are serious about your show, finding some people to advertise perhaps you can strike a deal with a local music store to rent some of their mics in exchange for ads, credits, people wearing their tshirst whatever. This rings of a project with alot of traded services.

Lousy bots. Do the advertisement companies actually think that we're going to buy their product now that they've spammed a forum?

But when I see thousands of links on a forum like that, I buy the product...

get a couple of inexpensive wireless baby monitors, then rig the recievers with mics, or open them up and solder a jack connection to the speaker leads, and run a conncetion to a mixer or audio input device to record. Not the ideal solution but could be way cheaper than buying mics for a whimsical project that you'll forget about in a week.
