I need a program that will take a video file in .wmv, .mpeg or .avi format and split the audio off into a separate file of either .wav or .mp3 format.

My budget is tight right now so if you know of a freeware utility that will do this than that would be great.

http://www.tmpgenc.net/

Use the 'output to file' and then 'wave file' menu option.

Program also lets you compress and convert video formats and all sorts of other stuff. Best program I have used for doing such things.

Another option: run a line out from your audio card and record the audio onto another source

spooky,
I'll give TMPGEnc a try when I have a chance, can it handle .wmv? The site seems to suggest it uses mainly .avi & .mpeg. (Which is good, but I need to split off a few .wmv's as well.)

CattleRustler,
That’s a good idea, sadly I don't have the technical skills to perform that action.
(I know it’s simple, hook the wire to the jack then into the input jack of what your recording. But I’m not comfortable messing with my hardware right at the moment.)

Wow! TMPGEnc was used to make the video in several mainstream retail games including:
- Arc The Lad
- Oni Musha
- SIREN
- WILD ARMS - Alter code:F

Cool stuff, thanks a lot for the link spooky!

*Snags the file, extracts it, runs it, splits the video files... runs the .wavs.*
Perfect!!! This is exactly what I needed! Plus this program is amazing!

Thank you!

Do you happen to know any programs for converting audio types?
(Example: MOD -> MP3, Wav -> MP3, midi -> MP3, etc.)

As for Cattle's suggestion, try something like TotalRecorder - It makes a virtual sound device where all out/input is routed, then is put into the actual device, and as such, you can simply record the streams on the fly

It's Shareware, but I think you get a minute of recording before a "Beep" is inserted, so it's more than enough to edit back together in Windows Sound editor

My prefered for getting sound off the PC from a Flash game, etc

Thanks for the suggestions.

That would kinda be defeating the shareware protection there. My rule is, if someone took the time to code it, respect them and buy it. (I know editing it like that isn't piracy. But it clashes with my personal morals. Thanks anyway.)

Know any freeware ones?
(Links would be appreciated.)

Thank you for all the help everyone.

TMPGEnc is performing all the operations I needed,
thanks again spooky.
(I'm now considering purchasing TMPGEnc Plus when my budget allows.)

Oh, I would... If I could afford it.

A Uni student's salary (ie, $0) doesn't allow for much.

It's a struggle to save enough government money to even pay for rent, let alone a program that I use once in a blue moon

Jess.

yeah, if you have an sb card then get audacity, set thr record input to be "what you hear", play the video in whatever player, with first having clicked the record button in audacity. Audacity will record the audio that is played.

easy

winamp has an input / output feature thats very pro as well.

it will appear that your listening to the song and the equalizer will move along but its actually exporting or importing.

check the preferences for such cool features.

dont forget to reset it or you will go bonkers trying to play a song.

I was un-aware you could do that in WinAmp, It's the program that just keeps on giving isn't it?

I will try out 'Audacity' as well. Thanks.
