I heard someone say it costed them £10 just to phone up AOL to cancel their account, this is probably why.

I've never called AOL to cancel but apparently they will do just about anything to stop you from cancelling.

@Pincho Paxton

AOLs aversion to account cancellation is well documented
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/08/25/aol_customer_service_probe/

Although, I can appreciate you thinking its fake. Poor customer has the name "Vincent Ferrari". Cool, granted, but who in real life has such a name?

back in 99 when I cancelled AOL (after having been a member since version 1.0 on floppy) the lady was real nice but asked me 4 times "are you sure you want to cancel". Finally after assuring her that yes I did indeed wanted to cancel, she informed me that she was going to start a recording, and was going to ask me again, to like "get it on the record". I was like sheesh why not just have a trial, and use a court reporter, LOL. During the recorded bit I snuck in the fact that I was cancelling because they kept raising my rate without telling me, and that I and a bunch of people were thinking of starting a class action law suit against aol-time warner.

she didn't like that bit too much.
oh well, fat cow.

I hate AOL.

Anybody who knows anything about IT hates AOL.

However, I would honestly recommend AOL for older people who are afraid of computers, or for people who just don't know anything about the web.

AOL is truly The Internet on Training Wheels. Some people (like my mom) would actually get more out of the internet with something like AOL.

Isn't that sad?

my mum had an ordeal cancelling her freeserve account, was costing £150 a month, sometimes as much as double for our internet, it took about 10 months for them to finally cut the line so we could switch over to someone else.

hehe, I still have my AOL account member since day 1 (literally) was using bbs's prior. I have kept it for $2.95 a month its worth it for me just to not have to change my email in 5,000 places. I just connect through my comcast now though. When I called up to cancel they did go right into a sales pitch to keep me on something. My dad used to work for an outsource group for AOL, thankfully he moved to a new department that outsources for another company cuz he was about to drive his car into the lake. he told me the only thing more stressful would be sleping next to Loraina Bobbit every night.

Well, Ive had my highspeed for a about 2 weeks, but my dad still keeps aol becouse it has his files uploaded to it and such. When we do get to cancceling, looks like we're in for a treat! Intresting fact though, when we do cancell aol, and we ditch our land line(more common nowdays) Well be in the green about 30 bucks. I think that shows just how useless aol is. I espicialy hate their tatics to sell their software for a highspeed connection, advocating that its dangerous without aol's protection! Shame on you aol, shame on you.

after the aol and time warner merge thingy, mr. time warner said it was a huge mistake as they had nothing but problems with their email since it started using aol services.

My aunt tried to cancel AOL a couple years ago and they offered her 6 months free to keep the account active. AOL's service isn't crap, but I believe it's really over priced compared to today's broadband rates.

I remember reading somewhere that if you give them your account details, tell them you want to cancel, and hang up before they go into their pitch, then they automatically are required to cancel you, no BS.

heh! thats customer service whether you like it or not.

AOL create thousands of CDROM installers for landfill in australia.
I was in sydney a few years ago and people were handing them out, about 100 metres each way was AOL trashed CDS all over the city.

I'm still with AOL, but about three months ago, I contacted them to cancel, they asked why, I told them it was because I was going over to Tiscali. They started telling me alot of crap about how Tiscali services aren't unlimited like there are, and throwing out alot of crap about how how bad Tascali are. Well, I said I'd risk it. They asked me why I was going over to them, and basically I told them that it's because of their combined telephone and internet package. Anyway after a long discission with them, I managed to get my broadband price reduced to match Tiscali's, plus their new phone service for half price. I'm paying them £5.99 for unlimited telephone, and £19.99 for 8Mb broadband, which is £10 off their normal price. Oh and I got a free wireless router as well, I checked the price, it's normally £60 for one of those. Plus of cause I get to keep my existing e-mail addresses which where well established by then. I had been with AOL for three and a half years, and to be honest with the deal I've got with them now, it's likely to be many years to come.

P.S. The technical support is shocking, but at least they don't charge £1 a min for it, and I've yet to find a technical support desk which is worth my time.

I'm lucky to never have used AOL! And when it comes to the AOL messaging service, I just use my own client to avoid their software!

On my first day with Eclipse Internet, they scored a lot of points. I called up, explained that I had an Wifi + ADSL router, and I needed help setting it all up.

The router in question was a Toshiba PoS. Truely awful thing. I managed to get a refund after owning it for over 2 years tho mwuhahaha. Anyway, there were about 3 officially supported routers and this one certainly wasn't one of them. Expecting the worst, I was surprised when the techie's attitude was "well, let's have a go at setting it up anyway" ... and he guided me through everything.

Never had another technical issue which required their direct help in 4 years. Getting my line regraded for free was a whoooole different story, but that was a CS issue, not a technical issue.

Now I understand why my dad hated it when I asked him to do the free trials. Im considering getting a free disk, leaving it on every minute of the day and then playing with the rep as I try to cancel seeing as how they wont want to lose such a high volume customer. Could be a good prank

lol, they really didn't want him to cancel . He should have just hung up after telling them sternly he wanted to cancel, and that was his final word, and if they didn't, he could sue them for forcing him to keep his account or something .

There are two simple ways to cancel your AOL account... terminate your life (Although your next of kin might inherit it)... or terminate the CEO of AOL... preferably the later.
