Well, I was just looking for people who (unlike you) have tried some and have some things to say.

HD as in hard drive?

go for a matrox, i've been told seagate and matrox are the best hard drives around.

i have a 250gb seagate, and it's starting to get slow now, after 8 months of daily usage.
i think i need to defrag it, but if that won't help; i would say matrox is better. allthough i haven't tried one. but it makes sence. to me anyway

I would say the other way around. Most of the drives I've heard that failed are Matrox. Do a search on this forum for similar threads and you get quite a few Matrox drive failure stories. Personally I've had 2 drives fail and they were both Matrox. Saying that I have a portable Matrox 300gb drive and it has worked fine for the last year or so. Although it isn't used all the time.

Cheers

Are you insane? I've sent back 3 Matrox drives this year alone. Seagate is a decent brand though, I'm using one now.

The best balance of price vs speed vs size is the Samsung 250Gb with 8Mb cache and SATA-150 interface (Samsung SpinPoint P120). According to reviews even with half the cache size of other compairable drives it was noticeabily faster, run's quitely, and doesn't give off too much heat. 250Gb is a nice sized drive too, it's going to be hard to fill it up with software alone, and you could stick a large collection of DVD's, MP3's and other multimedia files on it.

Don't get side tracked between the ATA/133, SATA/150 and SATA/300 interface standards. Just find out what you system supports and pick whatever. While SATA/300 has the potential for 300Mb/s in reality drives never go that high, average data transfere being around 64.5Mb/s which is well short of even the old ATA/100 standard. ATA/133 drives are more compatible with older motherboards, but the SATA/xxx connections have the advantage of thiner data cables which is neater inside the case and doesn't reduce the air flow much. Also at last check the price was £54 which isn't too bad, and works out at 22p (25p including VAT) per gig.

you were lied to.
then again every brand has its fans and its horror stories. I have had little or no problems when using Western Digital drives, I can't say the same for Seagate or Maxtor.

Yeah, my old computer has 2 WD raptor drives in a RAID 0 array (10k RPM each). Awesome stuff and hasn't failed in 2+ years.

Only ever had Maxtor drives go wrong, and have had fair few Seagates and WDs over the years. Think an old Seagate had problems booting once for some reason. Put it as a second drive on one of my older PCs and it's been fine since (must be about 4 years).

Ok, I went looking for WD and i found a 320 gb one for 109$ US, it says IDE Ultra ATA100, 7200 RPM, and 8MB cache, but how do i check to see it it will run on my computer, its only about a year or two old.

i've only used maxtor's and i have not had one fail yet - thats 5-6 drives used for mainly video editing

i think in most cases its personal preference, and whatever is the cheapest

the main thing which kills hard drives is the surrounding temperature - the cooler it is the longer it will last, as long as it isnt anything stupid

Yeah, my original post was wrong. Think I was hypnotised by the first post

Yeah, its a bit annoying that my new PC just has a single drive (although 300gb which is nice). Even with double the memory (2gb) and a much better processor, video card etc, the new machine is still slower at booting up, and things don't feel hardly any different (until you play a game that is).

The new one is a lot quieter though.

Cheers
