Hey, I just got a new mic today (my other one was terrible). I plugged it into my sound card, went into windows default sound recording program, and nothing went through. I don't know what to do...but I know I have it all hooked up right...

Torsten.

Go to Volume Control, choose Record from the file menu or something, and then tick the Line In box or one of the other ones - I forget which one.

does it need phantom power or a pre-amp?

Is there an on switch attached to the mic. Seems like the easiest solution to me.

phatom power is for some condenser mics, i doubt he will though because he sasys that he has plugged it into his sound card so i would guess its a 1/8th plug not an xlr jack needed for phatom (and yes i know you can use a stero 1/4 as a balanced output)

my best guess would be that it's impedence is too high for your soundcard, it would be nice to know what type of mic it is and who it is made by (i'm guesssing its a dynamic made by some small company for karoke)

the more worrying factor is the he refers to him as "my mic", oi oi what's happening there then

Ok, I don't know what model it is, but it is a Labtec. But the same thing happened with my old mic, not a singal sound would go through.

labtec make specific pc mics, so it should work with your computer, have you tried pluggin it in to an amp or a multimeter to check for a hardware fault? if not try it otherwise just make sure your mic is not muted and check that your mic is selected in the sound control panel thingy

My sound card is selected in there, but there is no option to select a mic, only the card it runs through.

look for the windows recording source for your card and make sure its set to MIC and that the mic channel isnt muted, or that the gain isnt all the way down.

right click the speaker icon in the system tray, then choose "Adjust Audio Properties". Then look thru the tabs and make sure the settings make sense

What kind of sound card do you have?

Maybe you should try a different recording program like Audacity, or maybe your mic isn't on.
