I'm currently doing the writeup for my project and I was just wondering if anyone could give me little history of darkbasic.
Stuff like
What year was DarkBasic created?
Who created it?
and anything else interesting...
Thanx

Lee Bamber is one of the people responsible for darkbasic. He also created 'The Games Factory', a pretty good 2d point-&-click games creator, and it's predecessor, 'Klik & Play'.
The company that created darkbasic is of course, dark basic software.
And my dark basic (classic) cd case says it's copyright 2000.

Rose - read the interview with Lee in issue 2 of the newsletter for the details behind DB (year started, ideas behind it, etc).

He didn't create The Games Factory or Klik and Play btw - that was Clickteam.

Cheers,

Rich

Don't think so, wrong year. Rick (Vanner) might have been the producer though, that wouldn't surprise me.

Cheers,

Rich

Yeah I think you're right about rick vanner. I think the newsletter mentioned someone called Malcolm Bamber. Was he involved?

Lee Bamber did not code TGF or Clik and Play BUT his name is all over the projects and manuals, cos he made the (rather funky) demo projects that came with them Trust me I use them for years (well the commercial Click and Create anyway - bizzarely released by COREL of all people, not Clikteam or Europress! It cost me over £400!!! No joke

Rose, why don't you email Lee or Mike, they'll give you a ton of info if you flirt a lil Their emails are lee@darkbasic.com and mike@darkbasic.com I think. Or maybe they are @ darkbasicpro.com now, I would guess either will work, but Rich can correct me on this if I'm wrong

Lee & Chris are Brothers ... Malcom is Lee's Uncle
if you goto DBplanet.com there is an interveiw - Lee states the companies he has worked for, how the whole idea for DarkBasic came around. It was created/started in 1999 (don't know the exact date) and was released Fall 2000 to the US Market, finally released Spring 2001 to the UK market (fast trak problems)

This was the year he left Lego Mindstorms and decided to go it alone with the help of Malcom (^_^) - Rick & the DBS Kittie were also big support in this hehee ... i think Rick setup alot of the PR and oddbod
If i remember what has been said well enough the original DarkBasic prereleases were a combination of both Malcom & Lee's programming with Maclom doing the majority of it, which as time when on Lee recoded this, and then recoded that until it became mostly his work. (but i think this was mostly due to the fact DirectX was new to Lee and he was still learning when the project started)

Rick is the business director for DBS (read: Producer). A very very major role. DB wouldn't exist today without him. Definitely not the "oddbod" He makes all the deals, knows all the people, has all the contacts, keeps the rest of us in line!

Malc and Lee started it all off, Lee made it grow, Mike joined last year to add extra code skills, Simon does graphics, Darren Ithell music (although not full-time employee), Andy did loads of graphics too but works for a games house now, I joined Jan this year, tasks too numerous to mention!

Cheers,

Rich

September 2000 PCGUK declared DarkBasic Pro in a small advert box style thing ... it was pitted againt Blender & DIV as part of a two page spread.

I can scan in the pages if you like from what i understand that was the earliest new of DarkBasic within the UK because PCGUK and DBS were kinda closely knit - which is obvious if you ever try thier F1 game

I got a copy of it on a PC Active Demo CD with a bunch of other DBC created games but it didn't work. Came up with Runtime Error: Error 38
