I have a CD which will no longer read, but I believe I may be able to extract some of the files from it. Windows dismisses it immediately, but is there a program I can use which will dump the whole disc to a file even if nothing will understand it?

You've got to be joking

If windows can't read nothing can as windows is what stores your driver info

Only thing i could suggest would be if it is unreadable due to scratching on the surface, you could either buy a disk resurfacer or take it to a game shop and have it resurfaced for a couple bucks.

chris... are you that unimaginitive... windowz = Teh Sux.

In technicalitys you could read the disc byte by byte and isolate the secotors/clusters that are damaged. Windows SUX so it doesn't do that. In fact it will crash your system if it hates the disc enough.

But Zone Chickens response is actually very good. The data is in the top of the disk (i think) that part with the label. A little scratch on the surface of the disc is no issue.

Windows doesn't suck.

I managed to scrape some files off an old Corel 9 CD. I think I used nero, but I didn't make an image of it. Try someone elses CD Rom drive, it may be able to read it better (if it's newer).

Good, then you're eyes work perfectly.

I'd think that since we were all talking about Windows software, we can conclude that I used Nero on Windows.

Alex? You mean my avatar?
How can I ruin a sociopathic rapist?

And the issue about the bad disc... I burned a CD on my computer and somewhere along the lines it screwed up. When I put it back in it got stuck in an endless loop chewingup resources. When I tried to eject the disc my computer refused so QED Crash. Not BSOD but still.

Now a simple read timeout would have been nice. Couldn't take that many lines of code as it is just a timer and condition... of course something so simple is insignifigant to the eyes of the Microsoft God.

And remember... the NJL is always there.

Merranvo, you're annoying, Windows doesn't suck it just has its problems, and Mac is just a lot better IMO, if Windows...'suxxorzd' then I wouldn't have any use for it, now stop trying to create arguements.

I had the same problem once, although the CD was made on the same computer, which is odd, but I never found a solution as it wasn't important to me (as I wanted to write on an old disk rather than view something)

But if you want an image of the disk, just use a digital camera (Sorry I'm suprised no one has said it just yet)

Besides the fact that it supports a good deal of todays media and programs?

Of course with mac software also supporting windows... it makes windows obsolute... just need to buy a mac laptop now. Looks at price range... maybe a little later.

There are various programs that will read data track by track - whether they will be able to copy with a dodgy CD is another matter.

Alternatively, take it to a data recovery place, where they will charge a nice lot of money to get the data off for you.

There's also those clear sleeves you can put over a disc, I've heard they actually work quite well with minor scratches.

ISOBuster is a good package. I only use it for extracting files from ISO images but apparently it will recorver data from damaged CDs and DVDs too. Might be worth a try.

Failing that, I seem to remember CDRWin being able to read raw CD data but you would need to check to be sure. Its been many years since I tried it out. I also seem to remember you could tell it to ignore bad data and continue reading. If you could get the CD into an ISO image file then you might be able to read the files using ISOBuster or something similar.

I have had this twice on a brand new computer after burning with Nero. Since the disk goes into that loop no matter what computer I put it in, I amd inclined to think the problem is with Nero, somehow.
