I am working on a Doom like game with dark ambience, creepy music, and plenty of shooting. The game is divided in to three 32 level (unless the fps creator has a limit below 32) chapters, which are 3 seperate games, I am currently working on the first one. Here are the storylines:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 1:
A distant cry from a far space station hovering near Mercury, and then silence. 2 hours earlier all that could come up on the comm link was screaming, gun fire, and unhuman like growling. An hour after that they sent a 12 man squad to investigate, none returned. At Roswell, New Mexico in a Goverment Installation, Code Name: Area 51, they Descide to send a stronger squad of elite soldiers trained in the perfesion of an extra-terrestrial attack. The group consisted of 7 soldiers, once they landed on the landing pad, they entered the Weapons Testing Facility, 5 went in while 2 stood guard (which is you and another marine) What went over they're comm channel over the next few minutes are as follow:
Echo 1: Whats your status Recon 2
Recon 2: Everything is clear up here sir
Echo 1: Good, we're walking into the next section of the lab which will be have to be acceses through mono-rail, but the pick-up is low frequency, so were going to be off-line for a few minutes
Recon 2: Affirmative
*static for a few seconds*
Echo 5: We're back online
Echo 2: My god, what happened here?
Recon 1: What happened Echo 2?
Echo 2: Massive Carnage over here, dead bodys, destroyed computers, sending the video footage to you now
Recon 2: Good Lord
Echo 1: Wait, whats that noise?
*silence*
*video footage breaks up*
Recon 2: Whats going on in there?!
Echo 1: I dont know, some kindof radio interup.. wait, what is that!!
Recon 2: Echo 1, status!
Echo 1: *static* I...know...my..god!!...*gunfire*...evasive manuvers.... AHHHH!!!!!
Recon 2: Echo 1 respond!
*static*
Recon 2: Stay here Recon 1, im going in to see whats happening

After that, Recon 2 was never heard from again, you are Recon 1, the last surviving marine on the station, you hear growling and snarling, they know your here, you know they're here... theres no turning back.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Since that was a bit long, i wont reveal chapter 2's storyline until its out, but for now, heres a screenie of E1M1 (sorry its bmp)

The storyline is almost the exact same from Doom 3 and/or Doom. Just that it involves Area 51 and Mercury instead of Mars. Even the level name is ripped straight from Doom!!

Give a man some bullets, and he'll want a gun. Give a man a gun and he'll be giving away the bullets!!

And your on level ....?

The screens look pretty stock. I don't know if I could take 96 levels of this but I'm sure it gets better. Good luck. You've set a tremendous goal for yourself.

Thanks, i started yesterday and im up to level 3 (and i made level 32 in advanced so thats 4 levels)

@ Maeko
Yes, but theres MUCH more storyline to it, thats just the storyline for chapter 1, you dont know what your enemy is (its not going to be demons), you dont know what they want (not to destroy earth), and you dont know why.

And also, im making the first chapter, then taking maybe a 1 to 2 week break, then the next, so u can have 32 levels at a time. And since thats a bit much, i made the levels easy enough to atleast get past a level, but hard enough to make a bit of a challenge.

More screenshots and maybe a video or trailer in the future

Yeah it's way too dark. Allot of people have the misconception that it has to be dark in order to be scarey. you can accually have a better lit area where the lighting accually plays a role in it's scaryness. It's more of a childs mentality that darkness is scarey, but for an adult/soldire and such is more of what you did see and what you wish you didn't. What I'm saying is don't depend on darkness to do all the work for you because it kinda works against you in a visually based user world.

Acutally the reason its so dark cause the whole station's power conduit is out, theres going to be a mission where u have to reactivate power (dispite the working terminals, but they are self power), some of the stations back up power is running so thats why theres some lighting, but thanks for your suggestions.

I will post many more screenies in the future (or in 15 minutes)

I agree with Disturbing.Making a game too dark is not scary. It's annoying. What is the point of playing an fps if you can't see what you are shooting at?
You can do a variety of things with lighting, design etc. that can make a level scary.
If the main generator went out wouldn't the back up generator fire up emergency lighting?
If all the lighting were out wouldn't the life support be out, too?
It would have to be a quick game with no oxygen.
My point in all of this is that too many people just make their level too dark because they think that makes it scary. That's taking the easy way out.
Level design, lighting, enemy placement and other things need to come into play as well.
It will take time for you to come up with a good scary game.Nobody designed a great game overnight.Keep working on it.

I've noticed that when people make custom segments, they use better lighting to show it off. Most games I see that are (what I think are) too dark use the default segments.

Yes, I believe it's the easy way out, but the guy said it himself.

I like dark games, but this one is a little bit to dark. I wourld recommend You to use small lights like candles or a torch... Quite intresting, but just a little bit to dark...
Keep up the good work Mr Steeve..

lights should be used to create shadows that can hide bonuses and surprises.

and I agree with explosys, that is the way the trend seems to go!

Great story, pretty much the same as DOOM 1's though. Looks like a good game in all fairness though and I look forward to trying it out

Good story, but make a bit brighter, darkness isn't the only thing that makes atmosphere. Use sounds, lighting, blood...
Oh and area 51 isn't in new mexico it's near Las Vegas.

Don't look behind you.

The screenies look cool.

But, seiously, put some light in that second screenshot.

Fog adds enough atmoshere. A flickering light would work, too.
