I have downloaded a couple of 3D models from a site thinking I could use them like the ones that came in DarkMatter, however I am struggling and don't think they will work as moveable objects in a game, can anyone help?

The first model is a .max file and is called (ignoring real name but laid out as follows) A-Object.max There are also 4 JPEG image files.

The second model is a .3ds file and is called Object.3ds. There are also 4 bitmap image files.

There are no files called eg H-Object-Move.3ds
Does this mean they are not suitable?

Not all models are animated. You probaby have a working 3DS stationary model. The Max model will not work unless you can find a program to convert it to 3DS or X.

Lots of free programs can convert models, but I don't know if they can convert MAX.

Google 3D converters. The ones I use are from all over the place. I use DB Classic to convert 3DS to X. Accutrans to smooth my 3DS models. Lithunwrap also can be used as a converter. You need to find one on Google for MAX.

I don't believe that there are any convertors for .ASE or .MAX files as they often have scripts associated with them to handle the complexities in Max. I could be wrong, though. I think that I have seen geometry extractors from ASE files, but you lose render settings, animation, skin weights, etc.

I'm half as useful as a box of vomit.
