Recently I noticed that my CD Drive was no longer appearing in the My Computer Window. I was using a virtual image of a game I own and had installed but that I couldnt find the disk for (I promise, I owned it ) Once I disabled the virtual drive I no longer had a CD drive show up in My Computer even though there is one installed and it is installed correctly. It is set up as the slave to the hard drive which I believe is correct. The jumpers are correct and it shows up in the BIOS but not under windows XP. I would try to update the drivers but I dont know who makes it, only that it is a 16x CD/DVD Drive. This is all happening under windows xp. If someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to fix it quickly so if someone could help me out over AIM, my SN is: verymanynames Thanks a lot.

I have the opposite problem. Three DVD drives appear in My Computer and a CDRW drive when in fact I only have one of each...

Now it just got weird. I figured I would try to uninstall and reinstall the drive. The CD Drive Section is not showing up under device manager at all. I figured maybe I could do it manually so I turned off the computer, Unplugged the drive and restarted. It went to a black screen and I heard a voice saying "System Failed PPU test" over and over.

What he said could be helpful.. I don't know if PPU would be a partition faliure though.

At least thats what I think the thing said. Im fine with people telling me whats wrong, thats exactly what I need. I can do without the stupid responses that offer no help such as "chuck your computer"

I fixed this a few months ago, in my case it was my Palm drivers, and I reinstalled them. It's the file writing drive that seems to cause the problem, any file writing drive needs to be reinstalled.

Yes, it would be a drive on your computer with a partitoin failure, maybe your motherboard. You wouldn't need to throw out your PC, maybe get a new drive, whatever it is, if there is something wrong with your motherboard though, that would be getting a new PC.

I got it fixed. Basically what I did was remove the CD drive from device manager (wasnt there to begin with but had it been I would have) and then uninstall the IDE Drivers. After a restart it reinstalled said drivers and the drive re appeared.
