I've been working on this project the last several months for our website, and the more I work on it, the more I think other mid-sized e-commerce stores could benefit from such an app as well. What is this program? It's a very powerful desktop application designed for administering your e-commerce website. It does everything from adding/editing products to printing out the shipping labels on a thermal printer and automatically emailing your customer their tracking numbers. It also keeps track of all your stock quantities, backorders, returns, and all that stuff.
Please understand I'm not trying to advertise this here. It's still very much a work in progress, and I only have a license to use the Fed-Ex printing services in our own corporation. I'm just trying to get a feel for what sort of demand there may be for such an application. It would require a good broadband internet connection to work properly with your website, and it's intended for mid-sized e-commerce stores. Right now, it's tailored exactly to our needs, so I would need to add a lot of customization features for it to work properly with other websites.
I'm thinking of getting my PHP shopping cart software up to speed where other people could use it and bundling this with it for a complete and powerful e-commerce package. You can goof around with my work in progress PHP shopping cart software at
http://www.rlights.com/rlcommerce/ (Again, not really trying to advertise, just getting ideas.)
Anyway, enough ASCII, let's see some pictures!
This is viewing the list of orders. Notice how you can add notes to the order.
Viewing the customer's orders they've made with us:
Editing a product. We sell lots of ceiling fans, but this could be customized for something else:
The shipping screen. It's still a little clunky on layout, but you can easily see which orders are ready to ship. Select the packages to ship, select the shipping method, and your shipping labels are printed for you. (Of course you'll need a label printer for this.)
Anyway, I just want to know what you guys think about this. Is it worth pursuing something like this?
Good performance is better than a good excuse.
