Hey guys,

Today some people from Nintendo came to work and setup five or six of the games that were shown at E3. I don't think many people knew about it, so there were only about 20 people checking them out, so I got to try them all!

It was *very* cool, and I especially like Mario Galaxy and Wario Ware! They even had the games running on actual Wii systems, not those Gamecube ones from E3!! The Wii is so small and sexy--- I am *definitely* buying it when it comes out!

Anyways, just thought I'd share in the fun

I try to leave all my consoles looking plain, with the most bought color. I don't care about how consoles look, just how they play.

I was reading that the Wii dev kits are only going to cost around $1,000 - which is insanely cheap for a next gen console dev kit!

Wow, perhaps I should get into the game design business so I can play game consoles early! Sounds cool. though. I'm betting that you're not allowed to take pictures?

The want was super responsive and sensitive. When playing the Tennis game, I moved slow, fast and tried backhands and other moves, and they were all perfectly represented by my onscreen dude. It was interesting how the CPU controls the tennis player's legs, so he automatically runs for the ball. Hopefully this will be an option.

The Wario Ware game was very impressive. There were at least 15 different ways to use the controller i.e. umbrella, slice, dumbbell, etc. So much variety

No, I wish. I actually forgot about that one--- I should ask

Unfortunately we're not allowed to take cameras into our work at all. I can take pictures of the outside of the building--- from the street. Hehehehe.

Yes! Nintendo is really aiming to get many more developers this time around. The Wii will really make or break Nintendo IMHO.

And yes, the Wii's they had here that we were using are black. They are a lot tinier than I imagined You could carry it around in one hand without batting an eye--- as a contrast my 360 is quite heavy for a console.

Does that mean that Camera Phones aren't allowed either?

(Sounds like that Wii might actually be a good system)

Ok, I never really thought it could be very sensetive, I guess I was wrong.. So how does it work, what detects if it is moving or not (maybe something like what is in the 360 that detects if it is vertical or horisontal)?

Well it was weird--- I was too busy having fun that I didn't check how the pointer was detected. My buddy who was with me says there's a sensor you put on your TV, but I thought the controller itself had built-in sensors that detect the different moves. I'm probably wrong though :-P

In my opionion, Wii has made some of the best moves out of the next gen consoles. $1000 SDK means more developers will have access to the Wii. Nintendo has always been conservative with which games they let on their consoles, but certainly this will extend their library of games. Software has always won the battle in every console that I can think of.

Putting something on your tv sounds very odd.. Maybe, nintendo wants you to buy, and find out.

It probably uses a 3D gyroscope chip. The chip has tiny gyroscopes inside it, and when you change the orientation of the chip the slightest bit, it sends signals describing the angle and speed of the motion.

That seems like the most logical and inexpensive way. Another question though, did it seem like a lot of exercise? By that I mean does it get somewhat repetative and draining after a while? Im curious to know as I wonder how people will adjust from just having to move their fingers.

You've tried the Wii?! (Revolution!!! It will always be the Revolution... )

Cool!

@Jeku:
Wii! I've got a ton of questions for ya then!

Did you get a shot at the new Metroid?
All the ingame trailers I've seen of people actually playing it has Samus shooting drunkenly around. How difficult is the controller to aim? I'm assuming that the aiming method was point at the screen at area you want to shoot. (I'm figuring the people in the trailers just aren't familiar with the new control style.)

Try any light-gun games? (House of the Dead!!!)

What cool job do you have that allows you to play Wii at work?!

I've heard the Wii has a speaker in the controller, was it used well in the games you tried?

Does the controller fit in your hand(s) well?

I've heard that the joystick controller is attached to the primary controller via cord, nun chuck like, did you get to try that out? And if so, how did using two controllers at once feel?

How many controller ports did the console have?

Did it have a memory card for saved games like the GameCube & PS?

The Wii has the best chance of providing new gameplay experiences (IMO), I hope it sells well.

I carry a sword in one hand,
a gun in the other...

I'm guessing a combination of both - the 'thing on the tv' helps it work out your distance from the telly and your angle from it (for pointing) and the gyroscopes (or 3d sensors) detect tilts in all three axes.

Jeku - you know I'm jealous. We won't get to see one at my work unless miracles happen. *green*

As for the $1000 dev kit - have you not looked at the website? Nintendo Developer Site. If you click at the bottom for Developer Applications, you'll see that they list the development costs from $2,500 to $10,000 (how much of that is the kit, they don't say). However, you still have to be a proper business, with experience in making games and probably a publisher lined up. I've also heard that Nintendo consoles (i.e. Gamecube/Wii) are a bit tricky to code for - the main advantage being that the tools have been around for years now (because of the Gamecube) and will probably be very stable.

Anyway - it's an interesting site, and one that makes me sigh in a dramatic manner a lot. *sighs in a dramatic manner*.

Well done, Jeku - I knew I wanted a Wii, but it's always nice to hear more good things about it

The only games I saw setup were the sports one with Tennis and Golf, Excite Truck, Mario Galaxy, Wario Ware and Madden 07. There were probably other ones that they may have put in by request, but I was giddy enough just being able to fool around with it.

And the "remote control" controller is very cool. I was very skeptical about it when it was announced (some of you may remember that), but to actually feel it is something else. It is very light and small--- *nothing* like the NGC controller, but more like the original NES with a trigger underneath.

The Mario Galaxy was the most uniquely controlled as you have the remote control for pointing and the little controller in the other hand. It's crazy having what is essentially a mouse pointer on the screen, which is used in the game quite extensively.

Software Engineer at EA.

Not that I know of. I saw the speaker but didn't use it.

I remember seeing 4 and then some USB ports in the back.

Yah, sorry to hear that. Do you mind telling me what company you work for? One of the best things about working for a cutting edge company is all the cool technology you have access to. Nothing beats that.

Quality control tester for a mattress company where your job was to sleep on a different mattress everynight to make sure they are top grade. You could put in all the overtime you wanted and every now and then they would tell you to get really drunk to see how it sleeps when the room is spinning. I'm thinking you must need to calibrate it, because the old lightgun technology would be no good (flashing the screen then reading the light output until the target pixel is found). Maybe you put a sensor on top of the TV and calibrate the 4 corners, so it knows where your aiming. With distance and angle info it would be able to calculate your aim from anywhere, as long as the sensor does'nt move that is.

Hope that's the case, want to hook it upto a projector .
