How bout I post it here and ask what modeling program do you have? We need a bit more info before we can help you. Your question seems a little vague.

Noone can really tell you how to skin an object. You can learn the method that your modeler uses and form your own prtices from it. I'm sure if you asked 5 modelers "how do you skin?" you will get five completely different methods that may conflict with each other, but work well for their respective modelers. SO learn what you can from the tutorial and see what feels best for you.

I've never had any luck with UV mappers. I just cut divide my model into groups and manually move the texture coords around until I have something that looks like a skin. It's not perfect, but it works for me.
