I am finally going to install Ubuntu Linux and I am curious on good places to get free software for it.

I am told that Ubuntu comes with a special program manager that will get and install programs for me, but I can't imagine it contains all of them. That is why I wish to try and install the programs myself.

Ubuntu is supposively based off of the Debian system, so I assume it uses whatever software Debian uses. Don't know exactly what it is.

A list of software I am looking for is:
1. Good free Anti-Virus for my version of Linux
2. Good free Anti-Spyware for my version of Linux

That is the most important stuff that I need, but if you guys could list other good stuff and where I can get them I would highly appreciate it. I don't know how to convert other Linux program types to mine, but maybe you guys could explain that if you include software incompatible with mine.

I really want CinePaint but the file types to download are .rpm and tar.gz files. Not what, if any, is compatible.

Thanks,
The Lone Programmer

avg for your virus checker will run in linux.
you may want a rootkit blocker as well.

i think you need to do a lot more research regarding those filetypes.
try wikipedia and linux in general

If you don't know what tar.gz is, then I think you should go back to Windows...

Oh, and next time, please read the entire Introductory information page from Ubuntu before you post here - It explains basically all of your questions (yes, I read it yesterday).

Jess.

one time i downloaded ubuntu and installed it on my computer.
it was for testing purpose only.
i didn't have any network drivers for my network card so i couldn't go online, and therefore it was pointless in me having it installed..

so i uninstalled it, but then i couldn't launch windows.
the boot manager was missing. so what would i need to do/know if i am going to do this again?

Lukas, either boot up into your XP cd and get the recovery console [Press F10 or R - According to MS Site], it'll then ask you which windows installation you want to recover, just enter the number and hit enter, and it may ask you for Administrator's pass. Simply type "FIXMBR" and hit enter, and hopefully, it should boot windows after a reboot ("exit" to get out of recovery console I believe).

Ofcourse, thats only going to work so long as you didnt accidently delete the XP partition when you uninstalled Ubuntu, but you'd realise when recovery console doesn't show the windows install .

Alternatively, you could re-install GRUB and just configure it for XP, but that's slightly more effort...
