My cat is very needy for a cat. Most cats are independent, but then again, I think my cat thinks she's not a cat. So, I need to come up with something to keep her occupied while I code (do homework and eat and do other things around the house). Quite frankly - I think Letterman comes by once in a while and changes my "pet" into a "pest".

So, I invented the Ultimate Cat Toy. Anyone playing with a laser pointer around a cat knows that cats love to chase that little speck of light around the house, and this can provide hours of entertainment for both the person and the cat. But since this activity involves both a cat and a person, it isn't very effective at keeping my pest (oops, pet) entertained while I need to do homework or whatever. So, here is the invention born of mother necessity (patent pending ):

Well at least it would learn to never do it again!

I think its a fantastic idea - if not a little dangerous to the cat. Then again, these are the same animals which wander out in front of cars, traverse thin, unstable and sharp-edged fences and in general face death on a daily basis. A laser pointer is probably quite low on the list of "death objects" for them. Maybe if you hung a knife and shone a laser at THAT... Now THAT would be cruel.

whats really fun is just have the cat trained to think that you like it and then when ever it rolls around on the floor want it to pet you just dive bomb onto it, don't worry the cats learn to go fast or if you see a cat asleep go get the vacuum very quitely and then if the cat wakes up just wait about 5 minutes and then turn on the vacuum-- pure joy but of course my cats name is cally and mousey but I refer to them as retarded cat and stupid cat

edit:

Laser lights do blind you, somebody at work got blinded by one. They should be banned. I think they are banned in UK.

Depends on the laser rating. The weaker ones are ok, but the ones you used to be able to get are no longer allowed. I'm not sure of the rating on laser levels. Mind you, a little maglight might get you the same effect.

In the US, 5mw is the legal limit for consumer-grade lasers such as laser pointers.

In many states, selling of laser pointers in a retail market has been banned due to the mischief caused by careless laser-weilding idiots.

If lasers can blind people so quickly we ought to just make a gigantic laser pointing device that shoots in all 360 degrees at the same time, and mount it on top of a tank and drive it through enemy territory.

I'm working on a high res photorealistic texture pack. High res as in 7 megapixels, e-mail me with suggestions.

Elbonia tried that in a war against France. Then Dilbert introduced protective goggles to Elbonia. Finally, Dogbert sold the plans to France. Now France has really cool light shows.
