Hi all,

I was just wondering (on a personal level, nothing to do with TGC) if there are any other anime fans here? I used to be really into it when it first came to the UK (early 90s) and collected the videos like mad.. Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Bubblegum Crisis, etc. Recently play.com was having a big summer sale, and I bought myself a copy of the 2004 version of Appleseed (the 3D one) and was absolutely blown away. It was a marvel to behold! So I bought myself spirited Away and Ghost in the Shell 2, which should arrive tomorrow.

But I'd like to know what do you recommend from here? I especially like the 'CG' anime style, and I prefer the cyberpunk style genre over any other. I bought a few Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex CDs from allofmp3.com and they were great, but I understand it is based on a TV series rather than feature lenghts, and the 'Gig 1 / 2, Volumes 1 / 7' thing leaves me wondering where to start (or if at all).

I'm not too interested in demon bonking epics like Urotsukidoji, but if you can throw some suggestions my way, I'd appreciate it

Cheers,

Rich

I can personally recommend .hack//Sign, although based on what you said, it might not be your cup of tea. Think of it as a futuristic, inside-an-MMORPG sort of anime, which follows the story of "Tsukasa", a player who's mind/spirit/what-have-you is trapped within the game while his real-life body is sent into a coma in the real world. It's kinda like a combination of action, mystery, suspense, drama, etc, etc, though all it's really for is rearing you up for the original .hack// PS2 games (They really made the show with better quality work than the games).

You could buy the whole DVD set now, but I recommend waiting for a month, when they re-release the whole DVD set as the "Hack//Sign: Anime Legends Complete Collection", at a much cheaper, reasonable price (from $110ish to $40ish).

.hack//Sign s Indeed an excelent anima, though It's hard to understand whats going on if you skip around the episodes any, as I did. I would also suggest Paranoia Agent, Its a VERY strange anima, but it draws you in if you stick with it, I guess you could say its ghost in the shell with less techknowledgy. Cheers.

If you find that Spirited Away is your cup of tea, then the Studio Ghibli works in general will be good for you. Generally, it's hand animated, and never cyberpunk, but still - it's not got tentacles anywhere.

My personal preferences from Ghibli:

Laputa, Castle in the Sky - Set in an industrial era, sky pirates and soldiers fight over the riches of a ledgendary flying island.
Nausicaa - Post apocalyptic fantasy where the infected wastelands and their giant insects threaten many kingdoms.
Princess Mononoke - Old Japan, when spirits and demons took animal form, a lone powerful warrior seeks the source of corruption.
My Neighbour Totoro - Child friendly anime set in the Japanese countryside where local nature spirits take two children on a fantastic journey. (Worth it for nekobus alone).

I realise these aren't what you said you were looking for, but if Spirited Away is your cup of tea, then these are some of the other good ones from the same company. Ghibli is a phenomenon in Japan - they even have a museum that is perpetually booked out.

I can agree with SageTech on Paranoia Agent as well, it's quite interesting, though as he said, very strange.

Adult Swim has an episode 9, "Etc." (although, it isn't exactly the best one), on their website if the thought of a strange show where the antagonist is a little kid running around on rollerskates thwacking people in the head with a nice golden baseball bat interests you.

http://www.adultswim.com/adultswimfix/index.jsp

And Tinkergirl is completely correct, if you liked Spirited Away, you'll love all of those titles listed above.

Anime is one of the most expensive interests ever. I own a few DVDs but wouldn't recommend many. I'll go through everything I own or have seen though.

Last Exile is ok, but the story was confusing. Certain events had little or no meaning, and I was left dissatisfied. Worth a look though if you see it on special offer anywhere.

Full Metal Alchemist is the obvious choice, although once all the DVDs are out, you're looking at £260 ish for the entire series. Ouch.

Neon Genisis Evangelion is one that I've started watching but I've only seen the first few episodes. I enjoyed what I saw, and it's supposed to be good but apparently it has a crap ending.

They're supposed to be bringing out Naruto on DVD later this year, though I'd really doubt it's your thing from what you describe (I love it). The advantage here is that I heard they're releasing quite a few episodes on each DVD (usually it's just 3 or 4 which is why anime's so damn expensive).

Final Fantasy Unlimited is for die hard final fantasy fans only.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - Best. Film. Ever. But only if you've played FFVII. The story kind of sucjs but seeing all the characters again brings beck memories. They also fight just like you imagine them to when paying turn based battles in the game. Especially Cloud and Tifa. The guy in the shop looked at me funny when I bought it because I was visibly shaking with excitement. Seriously.

I've heard good things about the following, though I've never seen them. I also don't know if they're all available on DVD in England.

Elfen Lied is supposed to be amazing(ly disturbing ). Basically a girl can kill people at will, but instead of just killing them, she rips them apart so blood goes everywhere. There's supposed to be a great touching story behind it though. Definitely available in England.

Full Metal Panic is one that I know very little about. Something about mechs and school or something. Don't really know but it's supposed to be good. Available in England.

Bleach is supposed to be good, but really long (still going, almost 90 episodes so far). Something about samurai sword weilding deathgods and ghosts and stuff. No idea if available in England, though probably not.

Hellsing is something to do with undead stuff. Supposed to be quite good. Don't know if available in England.

Shakugan no Shana looks interesting. I don't think it's available in England, but I've never looked. If I find it, it will be the next one I buy.

For proper discriptions of any of the above, google them. There's loads of info out there. There are also loads more series, so I'll go through my methods of finding new anime.

1) Google "anime" most of the sites have lists of anime and reviews.

Here's a site with a list of 200 top anime with reviews and ranks and descriptions.

http://www.animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=anime]Ranked list

2) Search anime forums. I won't link any because I don't want to get banned any time soon Seriously though, anime fans give loads of recommendations. Just ignore any download links. ( *starts to rant on how UK-available anime should be bought no matter what cost to encourage more anime releases over here* )

3) Amazon. Not only can you find what is and isn't available in UK, but you can find lists of recommended anime, and similar items. Very useful.

There you go, that's all I can think of right now. If I come up with anymore I'll tell you.

From your description I would recommend Ergo Proxy
Although still being aired in Japan, it was pre-licensed and therefore the first DVD in the US will be released in November.

Appleseed!! yes I felt the same when I watched that movie, the opening song was mixed together by my DJ friend (not for the show) but that's where I first heard it.

What you should definately check out is The Animatrix. all I have to say is... WOW.

9 different chapters of awesomeoness. Its very inspirational from a game creation perspective as well, alot of cool themes.

Anime I enjoy is Samurai Champloo, the hip hop samurai that scratch with records and things .

also Trigun is an all time favorite. about the $$60,000,000,000 man with the red trench coat and the six shooter.

there is so much out there, I can only reccomend following several
series.

Neon Genisis Evangelion is ok as a series, but after a while it gets boring and predicatable, I like it, but I don't think it has any replay value. Full Metal alchemist is also up there on my list, however ive know a few people to not like it, and I do admit the voice acting at times can be anoying. My final ratings:

Neon Genisis Evangelion 6/10
Full Metal Alcemist 9/10(Would be a ten, but as I said, the acting can be somewhat anoying at times, the story however is Excelent)
Paranoia agent 8/10 (Good overall story, but sometimes it seems strange and out of place, though it all starts to piece together near the end.)

Thanks Guys, there's some there that I'll be interested in seeing too.

I can't add much to the list, but you could try Samurai Deeper Kyo - it's not cyber, more historical demon bashing. The whole collection is available from amazon, region 1 only

mmm. I would have a look at Furi Kuri (FLCL or Fooly Cooly). Personaly I don´t like it but it´s kind of punkish.
If you haven´t already see the first Ghost in the Shell movie, do. I like it more than the second movie as it spent more time entertaining and less time trying to be "intellectual". Nice cg on the second though.
If your not interested in demon killers then stay away from Bleach and Blood+. Also stay away from Elfen Lied. Pure fan service. Otakus only.

Don't forget Cowboy Bebop either.. It's not as good as Trigun in my book, but it's pretty damn close. However, stay free of my suggestions if you don't like addictive, fun, and exciting animes. If you're more into watching as many people die in the shortest amount of time possible, watch Ninja Scroll or something.

I haven't really gone out and bought any anime for a long time but I used to enjoy the 'Guyver' series quite a lot. Its another of those ones where you need to buy lots of episodes though to get a proper story going. The live action film versions weren't too bad either as long as you in a 'funny' anime frame of mind when you watch them. The first movie being originally titled 'Mutronics' in the UK (for some odd reason) and costarred Mark Hamill. The second one was called 'Guyver: Dark Hero'.
Although its not a live action anime movie, 'Battle Royale' has got the same feel to it and is the best live action Japanese movie I have ever seen. Awesome.

I think it jud stands for FooLy CooLy.
Forgot to mention Samurai Champloo. I can´t stand hip hop but I like it all the same. Probably due to the better than average animation and lots of info about ancient Japan.
I´ve just relised that you´re talking about movies. In that case hardly any of my suggestions have been very helpful. Princess Mononoke was ok. I liked it more than Spirited Away anyway. Can´t think of any others. The first Naruto movie was not very good. And thst´s about as many movies as I´vew seen.

I'd not personally recommend Ninja Scrolls - there are some things I don't want to see on my telly, and that, along with tentacles, is one of them. Personally, I found it a bit offensive. *shrugs* It put me off anime for a long while.

- Cowboy Bebop
- .Hack//Sign (stay away from .Hack//Legend though, that was just plain bad)
- Naruto

Are all good, probably recommend Cowboy Bebop the most (cowboy/bounty hunters in space), though Naruto is my favourite at the moment (it's a gold mine of great ideas for rpg games).

Thank you for the suggestions so far, there are a few here I will certainly take up.

I am familiar with Ninja Scroll already, and not a massive fan. Mind you, I found Fist of the Northstar somewhat disturbing as well. And the less said about the Legend of the Overfiend/Demonwomb, the better.

However I did buy a lot more anime than that back in the day. My personal favourite was probably 3x3 Eyes, but I enjoyed the scope of Venus Wars too. Bubblegum Crisis/Crash were great, but expensive back then. I didn't like Guyver at all, sorry. Crying Freeman was entertaining, but went a bit nuts towards the end.

I already own Ghost in the Shell 1, and really liked it, hence why I bought the sequel. I just wondered if anyone knew if Stand Alone Complex was any good. I will check out Naruto, I do like that kind (and Howls Castle). Appleseed really blew me away though, so anything along those lines is good

Gungrave looks cool, and I'll try Mononoke too (thanks Tinkergirl) - and I definitely want to see Otogi Zoshi, because anything by Production I.G. has to be cool - and I like the look of it

i would recommend Noir, even though it doesn't fit the whole 'cyberpunk' thing. Its an action anime with a deep (DEEP) and twisty storyline. Although, in the first few episodes, it might seem as if it is very episodic and contains shallow characters, but it gets really interesting later.

Please do not waste your time with Naruto, It's a cheap ripoff of dragonball z, but with more ninja, and more kiddie stuff. Its a shame you dont get adult swim over there, Becouse saturdays is all anima night and they have some great shows on it. Someday, Perhaps.

Two other recommended anime:

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - if you're in for a laugh, this is the anime to go. It makes fun of everything otaku/geek related including RPG's, Star Wars, Hollywood movies and other anime.

Finally there is also the evergreen, GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)

Oh, I'd forgotten one short lived series - Battle Programmer Shirase.

It's pretty rubbish, set in modern day Japan - but, it does have the very best 'special move' ever - DOUBLE COMPILE!!!

Yes, because a 12 year old psycopath is kids stuff....

Where are sarcasm tags when you need them?

I agree certain aspects are childish, but there are alot of situations that you'd never find on CBBC (that's mainstream kids TV in England). These include perverts and masacres. In Japan, its a family show, in America I heard they edited out the blood and swearing.

Oh, and I've never wasted my time with dragon ball z, but I've heard that the fights in Naruto are about 10 times more intellegent. I can't really claim that myself though but the Naruto fights can be pretty clever. Plus the program's hilarious.

I also find stories written for kids and young teens (books, TV etc) can be far better than those for adults because they're (sometimes) so much more creative.

Whether it's your taste or not is besides the point, but it's not a kids show by any means. I'm excluding fillers from this statement. They can be childish beyond belief.
