when i copy a section of wood from a picture to use on my .bmp uv map it becomes very pixlized and looks horrible what can i do to keep the quality of the photo, please see the sample below

Most FPSC textures are 512 by 512.If you start with something as small as what you have in the pic when you rescale it the texture will look like crap.
There are several places to find wood textures or make your own.
Texture Maker has a working demo and is available on the TGC home page.
Or you can find a wood texture pack as well as some other FPSC related stuff at:
