Those who try WIP and Program examples would be able to select from
one to four stars that would show viewers which efforts are
worthwhile. Stars might appear next to the author's name or next to
the post number at the end of the subject line. Or is this just another daft idea?

[opinion] While I can see why some people would value a ratings system, I personally think it would be a bad idea. I think the system that we currently have in place is great... it's informative and people can help other people. What if one person doesn't like another person? They could simply rate their game as crap out of spite. Know what I mean? I foresee problems with this idea, but who knows. [/opinion]

I have to agree with Matt on this. Idiots who have personal vendettas with certain people could really screw over this feature, in the same way they could a Karma system should that be put into place.

Hence why neither really exist on this forum.

yea just people being more lazy, instead of giving criticism they would just rate it with stars.

I think it could be alright, but giving in depth opinions gives a more personable feeling i think.

It seems like a good idea, but I'm afraid that Oddmind is right. People would stop writing good feedback and only rate the thread. This would slow down the progress of a lot of good games.

I think a recommendation system would be cool, along the lines of voting in particular threads, but the idea would be if you find a thread that you find useful, then click the 'recommend' button.

Then just have a list of the most recommended threads, with links of course.

Kinda like halfway between a view and a response - like you'll often get 200 views and 6 responses, at least this way people who'd rather not respond can contribute to a good threads popularity.

I think generally people know a game is good when it has lots of pages to the thread, lots of posts and losts of views, so then a good game gets the coverage it deserves.

I do think this is a good idea in theory, but like everyone else said, it's won't work in practice. Van's idea is quite cool though. I'd go along the lines of each member has a "Recommended" or "Favourite" type badge or something for the WiP forum and then they attach it to the WiP that's currently most interesting to them. That way nobody gets slured and each vote is meaningful. Instead of having a 3/5 stars rating for the thead you'd have 8 Favourites rating, meaning 8 people are more interested in this WiP than any other.

Just my take on the idea.

It would have to be positive only, and one rating per thread per user. Negative allows personal vendettas, whereas a "recommendation" button as Van B suggests prevents this. And on a one user, one vote system you can very quickly pick up on people recommending their mates' threads.

There is a site called MoneySavingExpert.com, that uses a similar system. At the bottom of the post, it says "The following users said Thank You for this post...". Against the users avatar, it says "Thanked nn times in xx Posts"

Van B's idea seems better to me as well.
