What would be the best way to make a board game?
Add a bunch of cubes and assign a function, or make a matrix?

I am wanting to make a board game like Monopoly, to learn by, but I have no idea on how to start this.

Any suggestions are wellcomed,
Thank You,
William!

I'd make a single box or plain and texture it with the board design.

It depends whether the board is interactive or not. With DB you have the freedom to make your board as interactive as you want, morphing around and stuff that could never happen with a conventional board. Since you are only starting, it's likely you want to make a static board. It all depends on what you need. Matrices need tiled textures to work, plains only need one. However lights and massive polygons don't go together well.

Just for starters, I was thinking of making the squares as you land on them light up with differant colors.

As you rightly pointed out there are 2 main ways of approaching this. Of the 2 the idea about using the boxes or plains has the most merit, IMHO. I think that using matrixes you are going to have texturing issues as the size of the texture you can use on a matrix is limited - and bear in mind you'll need 2 textures for each of the board squares(LIT and UNLIT). A monopoly board has something like 38 squares, I think. So you'll just lose a lot of detail with matrixes.

I can't devote any serious time - but I can knock up an example code of this, if you want, as a starting point.

Still waiting for the code?
Is it going to come, or did you give up?
Thanks!
