Ok, my computer has as problem where it likes to completely freeze, as in no mouse, keyboard, or sound, so im forced to unplug and plug it back in. Now, at first i thought this just happened randomly, but apparently theres ussualy one application that it freezes during. The first time it started happenign was when i used limewire, so i quit using it for a while, but since i reinstalled my mcafee security suite to solve another problem, it now also likes to freeze on certain websites, 90% of the time being when i try and open up a myspace. I have an Emachines c2684, which is a $300 computer i got a couple years ago at walmart the day after thanksgiving. So its no custom machine or anything, is overheating still an issue? 'Cuz the only time i turn off my computer is when im forced to restart it b/c of the freezing issue. But if it was a heatign issue, why would i freeze while im only using certain applications?

First of all Emachines SUCK. Second of all, you are better off just getting a new computer.

As for the lockups, I can only speculate that you don't have enough RAM.

My guess is that you have a malware ActiveX component installed in your browser, which makes certain websites freeze the computer b/c the component was badly coded.

Go to your internet options, in the general tab click on settings, then click on view objects, and delete anything you don't immediately recognize as being safe. Safe objects are things like "QuickTime" or "Shockwave Flash". Anything that says "Unknown" or "Saver Toolbar" should be deleted with malice.

Then do an adware/spyware scan and viruscan.

2600 isn't so very far behind, these days it's more down to the amount of RAM and graphics card. A decent 6600 or 6800 nVidia card and another 512Mb of ram would see his system through just fine,

Personally I reformat my system every six months, this usually fixes most problems. It also means I keep backups every six months.

As for the over heating problem as a possible cause, quite likely in this heat. It's entirely possible that it's a cpu load issue, i.e. the higher the load the hotter the CPU runs. Frankly if you want to be sure, the best thing to do is to remove the side of your computer, and stick a deskfan next to it, blowing into the system. I've got a box fan (12 inches) built into the side of my PC at the moment, it really does help with cooling.

I have a 2000, 1.8GHZ... What's wrong with that!?
It runs most apps fine and can outdo some of the latest Intels in benchmarks with a few custom optimizations.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Unless you're referring to liquid nitrogen cooling then I doubt that very much!

A 2600+ Is often still more than enought for most stuff. As has been said, RAM and GFX make the most difference.

This one sounds like malware - although it might be overheating. Try running Motherboard Monitor (MBM) on your machine. They stopped developing it years ago but its still a nifty program. Should tell you what temperatures your motherboard and CPU are running at.

For some reason I don't believe that a 2000 can outrun a Pentium D.

Yes, get a new computer. Also, you could take it up to CompUSA or somthing and let them deal with it.

the problem isnt serious enough to warrant that yet, as it is right now, its more of an extreme annoyance than anything else, because my computer takes abvout 5 full minutes to boot back up and get to my profile. And i dont need any fancy specs for my computer because i only really use it for the internet and programming (html, still playing with dbpro and such, nothing too graphically demanding) and then i use my 360 for gaming.
