Huge difference it seems, but I dont know if directx was the only factor in the difference in these screenshots.

DirectX 9
DirectX 10

Edit: Ah, nevermind, it seems the article this was on states "This isn't an in-game screenshot, but it's a test render of what the Flight Sim team honestly believes they can achieve in DirectX 10. The leap over DX9 is pretty dramatic."

edit: eep, sorry for that, i thought i was editing my old post

well the water looks nice but the rest i doubt is just because of dx10, cause that could be done using dx9, and i suppose looking at the crytech engine even the water could be done in dx9 so what is the real advantage? is it just a way to force people to get vista? cause eventually more and more games will use dx10 and ditch dx9.

The sky and water and lighting are different enough to the point that you are comparing peaches to nectarines.
This is obviously M$ propaganda to encourage pixel envy.

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

haha in the second one there are clouds added and better lighting setup. Obviously direct x 9 could do this, but they spent more time and actual brain power on the second one.

Maybe they're trying to say, "You can do #2 in DXA as easily as you would in DX9."?

Of course you'd never see microsoft shoot down a new product. But before i read his second post i knew those where pre-rendered.

If thats for a flight sim thats not real, because no computer DX10 or no DX10 will be able to render that in real time going 300mph in game.

That DX10 photo is a fake, I mean look at those waves, sure its realistic, but it just looks really fake, I will not believe it until I actually see it working on my screen in real-time.

Sorry to break it to you but the speed at which you are traveling ingame wouldent effect the speed at which it renders, renderig that scene in realtime wouldent be very hard, however to make the waves realistically change heights and the foam to move along it realistically would be very hard, and whats the point? this is a flight sim and the most youll see is the mountains and they look crap, why didnt they improve those instead of just make the shadows darker.

The whole Direct X 9 vs Direct X 10 debate can be summerized as the following.

Direct X 9.0c means compatibility with 95/98/ME/2000/XP/Vista

Direct X 10 means, go buy Vista.

So stick with 9.0c for as along as you can, it means you will reach alot more users than you would if you used 10.

Also you will find that any Direct X 9.0c graphics card and game and reproduce the screenshots shown on the first post if for no other reason than that no graphics card with DX10 archetecture exists yet so logic dictated that those screenshots were produced with a Direct X 9 based graphic card. Until nVidia, or ATI or someone else releases a DX10 based card, I'd take such screenshots with a pinch of salt, at best you are alooking at emulated hardware that's almost certainly being rendered like a 3D app, rather than in real time.
