Hey guys,

I wondered, is it possible to create a Local Area Network for my house. I have 2 routers, 1 a wireless 802.11 G router (with 4 wired ports), the other a standard 4 port wired router, both with WAN ports. At the moment my broadband modem connects to the wireless modem which then distributes the signal around the house. I wondered if it is possible to run a cable from the wireless router to the wired router to extend my network. I would like to have 2 computers running off this router, one is going to be a file server for the house, the other will be my brothers bedroom PC. Due to the speed requirements for a file server, and the thickness of the walls/distance between the positioning of the wireless router and the computers upstairs, it is inpracticle/virtually impossible to only use the wireless router for my needs.

Any tips on how to do this, or if it is even possible would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Mike

Im glad that it is possible. Do I need to set any special options on either of the routers like static IP or disabling DHCP. If so which setting should I use for the primary router (wireless) and secondary (wired) router?

Thanks for your help,

Mike

A router should just pass on any queries to the wireless router - really the router is a hub, the wireless router is probably one supplied by your ISP or at least has all your details.

That's how I have mine setup..

ISP --> Wireless router --> 4-port router/hub.

You should only need to worry about the settings in your wireless router - security etc - but really all that stuff is a lot easier to deal with than you expect.

yes, sorry.

main router is assigned isp IP, has dhcp ON (assigns all devices on network), and has its static ip 192.168.1.1

my wireless router has its dhcp server OFF, and has a static IP 192.168.1.2 which is the gateway for all wireless devices, but the main router actually assigns their ip's (192.168.1.200-209)

i also have a range expander downstairs (192.168.1.3) setup just like the wireless router so my inlaws way downstairs can connect

Thanks for your help guys. I now have everything set up. I'll just have to swap some of the cards around, as video streaming to my HTPC with a wireless card is very slow. When using a wired connection its perfect. I now have internet and a network everywhere I need, along with hooking up an old PC to serve as a media file server for the house.

Thanks again,

Mike
