Hi

Just placed a few samples of new work on there and still pretty much have to fill it in. But it's the design I'm looking to get opinions on. Ignore the code.

Thanks!

edit: Please note, I'm a graphic designer and not a coder. So any "fix taht code" requests will most likley be noted quite dully unless someone would like to code for me in exchange for graphics/art.

I'm not all that crazy about the big sushi board menu thing, it looks big and bulky.

You're actually going to put your personal journal on your commercial site?

Commercial?

Also, is that not what

everyone

does

nowadays?

I don't quite see how it can be picked on. This site will serve as my folio for college applications and potential clients, it only makes sense to allow people to get to know me by including a journal.

Thanks for the comments.

Is a catfolio anything like catphelia? Because they both sound very nasty. Some of the links on the front page don't work. Not sure if anyone already said that but I'm too lazy to read the rest of the thread.

V. Nice design, as always

However, you need to change the font for body-text to a sans font, something like Helvetica, or Tahoma, or even just Sans

Agreed, serif's were typically designed for newspapers and printed text. Sans-serif fonts are much easier to read on computer screens.

Megaton - I dont know if you got my email, but I've redesigned the page to work properly with DIV's, etc. Its also completely Javascript free while keeping the mouseover's on the nav chopboard. Slight issue with IE, but who uses that browser anyway!

This is the problem I have in IE (ie 6)...

Btw: Thanks for the kind comments!

I was quite chuffed at the non-js rollovers They should work in any browser - with or without javascript. They should also degrade nicely too (if they should ever need to).

I only get that in Internet Explorer (SURPRISE, SUR-F-ING-PRISE!)

I honest hate Internet Explorer. I've always thought it ironic that nobody at M$ did a little research into what the definition of an explorer was... But it basically comes down to someone entering unknown territory to learn what's in there. So Internet Explorer actually admits to not knowing what the internet IS and us pretty much wandering blindly though it!

I have a feeling that problem is caused by a margin on the header date block...

I see the same in IE...

I think, however, that it may be that you're trying to use a transparent png in IE (which it doesn't support without that annoying work-around hack).

Try changing it to an indexed GIF, and you then you don't have to specify the transparency for the background colour in the #leftColumn .innerContent .top class which should get IE over it.

But, I'm only guestimating

I'm not using transparent PNG's. They're PNG8 run through a nifty tool called PNGOut which strips out all the crap that Photoshop leave in AND runs it through a high level compressor multiple times, often knocked about 20% off the file size. Its a FANTASTIC tool and cant recommend it enough. It can take any file type and turn it straight into a compressed PNG. It can support PNG8, grey scale, RGB and RGBA. They're also developing a plugin for Photoshop so you can just do "Save As..." and go straight through their tool rather than save to web and then run it through the tool. Nice! I THINK the tool also supports multithreading too - usefull on my Athlon X2

I gave up using PNG24 ages ago - although it works fantastically in any browser except IE6, most people use that "unfortunate" browser.

I'm thinking this problem is SOMETHING to do with padding or margins on the content of the box. Not sure though. Its the same technique I've used on my www.dbp-site.com which works perfectly in all browsers (AFAIK).

An an appreciated one too. Its often those simple things which are hard to find. Example: the left block is id'd as #mainLeft. in the CSS I'd called is mainleft (note the capitalisation issue). Took me about 2 hours to figure out why it wasn't floating!!!

Its fixed - this is the best bug I've seen in IE so far!

You may have noticed IE doesn't like having empty table cells, well it turns out it doesn't like empty DIV's either...

I was using a DIV with an ID and no content so I could style a block. IE didn't like it. The solution (as found here http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum83/6285.htm) is to insert a comment (YES - A COMMENT!) into the DIV!!!

So instead of doing:

Do this:

Oh dear lord thats stupid!

Hey guys

The FBI finally caught up with me at Atlantic City and just dropped me back off at the border.

A pic I took as I was about to jump of the Empire State Building...

Overall, visited Manhatten, Washington D.C, Baltimore and Atlantic City.

Anyway, thanks for the comments on the site. I'll be working to solidify it in the coming week.

I've heard of people who just read the first post then skim over the rest of the thread, but right here we got a mystical and rarely seen being who doesn't even read the first post.

I rekon it's time to move up from the Dreamweaver generated code before telling other people to validate their temp design slices.

Jeku: It's Japanese Kanji, and it means says "Aiki". It's very hard to translate into English and there is no real transparent translation out right now, but a simple Wikipedia page will tell you more about it.

Funny how some people who have a close connection with either Chinese or Japanese assume either one if the one they know best. My Great Uncle was a Japanese Translator and Officer for the Soviet Union during WW2, so naturually because he dealt with alot of Japanese he refers to all Asian people as "Japanese". He even called Jackie Chan a Jap the other day.

If you cant handle good advice regarding your site, your not going to hold clients for long.
I gave you good advice regarding errors, but you seem to have a glitch with my advice.

And I gave you a link to the post where I specificially announce not to pay attention to the code as it's temporary and I did not code it. If that's not as up front as it gets, then I dunno what is.

Obviously not your problem, nor mine, which is why I'm not to fussed about it. Doesn't take a master to know Dreamweaver/Fireworks code won't validate.

You *do* know that kanji is taken directly from Chinese characters, right

I realize your site is Japanese themed, but the characters originally are Chinese.

@indi -
Megaton did say that his source code was not important right now, that the design was his primary concern, that's all. That's why all of the advice so far has been focused on the design.

Quote: "You *do* know that kanji is taken directly from Chinese characters, right"

I was a bit surprised to learn how much Japanese culture is derived directly from China. It's like... almost every bit of of. I thought they'd have more of their own.
