I just installed FireFox, and I'm trying to delete the internet explorer, and god! I just can't figure it out! I tried add/remove programs, and I found nothing (apart frm a bit that deletes it from the desktop and start menu). I tried to delete the file from program files, but it keeps coming back. How am I supposed to delete it?

I think you can only remove it in SP2, but then I'm dubious considering how it's tied into Windows so much.

Damn, it's annoying when it comes to popups.

[edit]

Hmm, could anyone recommend a good free popup blocker?

If IE is starting itself and giving you popups, it sounds like you're infected with spyware. Get a good spyware remover and see if that helps.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

I'm probably infected by just about everything, my computer's a mess and I'm trying to clean it up a little. I'll search google for a good spyware remover.

as said by some comedian:
Quote: "And I hate those millions of popups I get, and have you ever noticed that over 50% of them are advertising for popup blockers; its genious they are creating a need instantly!! It really makes me want to setup a first-aid kit selling stand outside of one of their offices and then be like "do you want to buy a first-aid kit" and then stab them in the head and be like "you sure you don't want one?"

If you use firefox, you can add this plugin...

It's quite good - it keyword filters pages.
On my list right now:

It's a pretty complete list, I haven't seen a single popup (or pop-under for that matter) for months!

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

ahhh I've had quite a few but I just started it, though any popup I get I block at domain level(except for google ads, google actually is useful sometimes) and I block many of those annoying flash ads especially those ones with sound where theres no mute button and I'm on dialup so I really dislike ads

edit:
now if only their was a way to block those friggin spam IM bots

You cant remove IE per se, only its icon. Unless you want to get real hard core and start mucking around with Windows DLL.

It's possible to remove IE if you're a superhard core hackomaniac, but if I recall correctly you end up killing off a part of windows as well.

If it's starting by itself, then either you've been infected with spyware, or somebody has put it in the startup apps folder or in the services thingamadoodle. errr... My mind's just gone blank and I can't remember how to edit the startup services >.< It'll come eventually...

If IE boots itself up it is probably Messenger Plus that's doing it. Go to add remove programs, remove Messenger Plus adware, but you can keep Messenger Plus. That's what happened to me anyway.

Yeah, I wouldn't try to remove IE. If you notice, you can open internet in any folder, and you can browse your computer by entering the path into the IE address bar. It's just part of windows, and how it operates.

Does Google toolbar work in FireFox? It has a great ad blocker, spell checker, autofill, etc. Great toolbar, and I hate toolbars. Now I can spell check every single forum message that I post, directly in the browser.

If I'm not mistaken, Windows Explorer and Internet explorer rely on each other... so you dont want to mess with it.

I would reccommmend adaware. It's free

do adaware but also if you could show us a proccess list(via task manager) then we might could tell you what to look for in msconfig

also I recently got a virus that was not detected by avg and it ran under the proccess name of "csrss.exe", now there is a vital process called that that runs under SYSTEM but if you see it running under your username, go into windows\system and delete csrss.exe, same goes for lsass.exe

also might want to get a virus scanner and scan for virus's especially if your internet connection is busy, even though your not downloading anything

Yes it does.

In addition to adaware, you might also want to try Spybot Search and Destroy. Just be careful when looking for spyware removers, as most of the programs that claim to be spyware removers are actually spyware themselves.

Haha. Yeah, those little IE popups that say "Your computer is infected with spyware. Click here to delete it.." are the best.

I've pulled some computers out of a gutter with Spybot. Good program, and free. Norton Internet Security is really good too, but oh so not free. I've also got crappy ass AOL spyware remover (not my choice), and then there's the automatic IE spyware updates. And I have Advanced System Optimizer, which has a spyware cookie scanner. Damn, my system is infected with Spyware Blockers...

simply, no

I will eventually put my experiement into action in which I will take a vpc with windows 2k installed(no updates) and click on any ad I see and click on any popup, and then after a week check how much adware I have gathered and if I get a virus, but for now.. I'll continue with my OS

If you wanna kill your pop up from IE, I had the same problem delete all of your spyware/adware with something like adaware and then download Sygate firewall (no longer supported by there are still downloads around) and once you tell it to block the type of network that you see when a pop up happens (it will ask you about blocking it) tell it to keep the answer and block it, I've never had a pop up since. (except the standard ones Firefox allow through that are told by websites to pop up, like the dell one on the computerarts site)

IE is integrated into the entire system, removing it completely would probably cause windows explorer to stop working and anything else made by MS that can potentionally display web content. Besides, if you delete the IE program Windows will just put it right back in a minute or so. Sometimes that even fixes issues with it.

Hmm, ok I don't think I want to muck around with it now. I just managed to delete MS Paint somehow Luckily that can easily be remade in dbpro.

Oh, does anyone know where to get a good/free spyware remover? I tried spyware doctor, it said it was free, turns out it wasn't, but it detected over 1500 infected files ¬_¬'

@NeX

Where do you get that plugin?

Everybody has already posted them in this thread. Ad-aware, and spybot. They are unlikely to stop IE from booting though.

However, as I said, so I'm just emphasising it, Sygate Firewall, is excellent at blocking them, so is Zone Alarm firewall and most other good firewalls, your best bet is Sygate, adaware requires that you pay for the product from it to do real time scanning, the free version requires frequent full scans (weekly or whatever suits you) whereas Sygate just blocks the type of networking that adware/spyware uses on your demand, meaning no access to your system (even if they are installed, there is nothing allowed through to prompt them)

it goes well beyond "help files" my friend.
there's aspects of the OS (xp) that wont run if IE or any of its dependencies are missing. And it won't even tell you what the problem is, it'll just act stupid and let you decide.

Ok I havn't read this whole thread, but I just wanted to throw in a tip to keep IE from accessing the internet.

It's a bit of a hack, and updaters may not function properly after you do it, so remember how to undo it if you have problems with other programs:

Open IE and go to tools/internet options/connections/lan settings/tick the "use proxy" thing/
for the proxy address just put in 127.0.0.1 port 8080.

Now IE cannot access the internet, but FireFox uses it's own settings so you won't have a problem there.

Just my two cents.

I'll take zonealarm over sygate any day. I tried switching to it once before, nothing but annoyances. Sygate constantly displays that mini popup warning when anything happens. I tell it not to display, it does anyway.

I managed to stop it from displaying, I forgot how I did it, probaly a few 'don't displays' did it. But Zone Alarm is a lot better, but unfortunately after finding my copy I found my liscence had expired, so I'm just running a trial of it.

If you really don't want IE running, so much, go to task manager, then processes, find 'explorer.exe' end it. You won't be able to do much, except run things through the task manager, but the IE gone with explorer itself, until you run it again or restart the computer. I used to have to do that on one of my PC screws up where explorer.exe crashes on start up. (And some time after re-running it)

Um, IE is listed as iexplore.exe in task manager, explorer.exe is the windows shell (which admittedly uses IE if your folder views are set to be viewed in html).

I know, but can't IE just start when adware wakes up for morning coffee. Its not a very practical solution, but thats the closest you're gonna get to stopping IE and its adware.

Could you not just go into the folder where the exe is and paste a firefox.exe in there with the same name as IE, and allow the over-write?

<EDIT>

Nope, doesnt work. Guess you'll have to look through the registry but even that'll get complicated with all of the reg files linking to IE.

Zotoaster, you may want to keep IE on your system.

the TGC activation program relies on IE, does it not? so if you want to activate any other 'plugin' in the future you will need IE.
