CRUD! Nothing but problems on today's run into Chicago. My computer crashed the game TWICE when I was landing at the airport in Chicago... I touched down, then THWACK, game crashed. The THIRD time I flew it, everything *almost* went better, for 15 minutes anyway until my right engine gave out lol. Bad luck I suppose Anyway, here's today's flight-journal entry for those of you keeping up with my adventure:

Quote: "
[2] 280nm - KCLE (Cleveland Ohio USA) to KORD (Chicago Illinois USA)
Distance Traveled: 282 nm (est = 274 nm)
Fuel Consumed: 106.8 gallons (est = 102.4 gallons)
Flight Time: 01:18 (est = 00:55)
Notes: This sub-leg was plagued with PC issues... twice I landed in Chicago, and both times the game would die on me. The third flight, however, I made it to Chicago... on one engine. about 15 minutes into the flight, my right engine suddenly gave out, and I didn't want to give up and turn back, so I carried out the rest of the flight on one overcharged, overworked engine. I also learned why they call Chicago the "Windy City..." the wind blew my little beechcraft all over the place. On my way out, I'll need to climb to about 15k feet just to avoid all of the turbulence... yet another fuel expendature. Ugh."

That's awesome Jeku, welcome aboard the flight-sim-nerd express hehe. I'm hoping that someone else will try a flight around the world, maybe if you learn it quick enough you can join me

@ Steve: I couldn't imagine playing this without a joystick. I have a Saitek ST290 Pro and I couldn't play a flight sim without it hehe. 6 buttons, a hat, and a full-twist stick (for rudder control). The only thing I don't like about it is the throttle... it's below my wrist, so I need to lift my elbow to get my arm out of the way (unless I raise my chair up really high). Otherwise it's an awesome stick, I love it Jeku, I hope you have a good joystick! You'll go nuts without it hehe.

Anyone have any idea how much bandwidth this game uses (when downloading data such as the real-time weather)? Knowing how many MB per hour on average it used would be really helpful. Cheers.

For university limitations?

I don't think real time weather will use much - it will be downloading pure data, not any large bits of media.

Funnily enough, my Uni has unlimited, but my home provider (and also the major provider for all of Australia) is the one that sets a limit.

I wish I had a good stick, I am still using my Top Gun whatever its called. It ain't calliberated so it was kind of funny when I first used it. I pushed the throttle up and the plane turned right.

Again Matt, thanks for the help.

Dave: It really isn't much. The real weather updates every 5-15 minutes depending on where you're flying in the game (and how many weather stations you're close to) and I don't think it's a lot of data... I'd assume the packets are pretty small, maybe a kilobyte or something. I don't know how to measure kb/ mb data transfer while I'm in the game but if you let me know how I'll give you an exact number.

No problem Jrock You should pay a visit to Radioshack, circuit city, someplace like that and check out their joysticks/ flightsticks. You can get a decent Saitek for $30 to $40 in most places (well, here in the US anyway)... definitely worth taking a look at

They should port this on the 360 to use over Xbox Live--- that would be crazy, maybe in a persistant world with others flying their planes and radio chatter, etc.

I heard once on the news that there was a dedicated fanbase who basically just provide air traffic control for seriously long periods of time to people playing the game. Is this true? If so then this must trump every other geek past time out there. I mean emulating a seriously stressful job with nothing much more than a radar type screen. Tops. And I would be damn sure it can be quite stressful (ok so noone dies) when gamers get hacked off with virtual crashes and the like. Tops

Cheers

finally someone doing something nerdier than making video games for a hobby! . I saw flight simulator 2004 at target today, but decided I'd just wait for flight simulator x for a couple months. It looks awesome. Oh, and I have flight simulator for windows 95, lol, even lower than i thought, looks like I need to get up to date ...

You *should* be able to play it on the Zone... I've played it there in the past a zillion times. Unless they took it down recently, but I doubt it... the last I saw, they still had MSFS98 up there hehe.

Quote: "I heard once on the news that there was a dedicated fanbase who basically just provide air traffic control for seriously long periods of time to people playing the game. Is this true?"

Very. I've seen them online a lot of times... just sitting around in helicopters or cessnas at major airports waiting for planes to arrive or disembark. Last summer (or maybe the summer before that) when a hurricane was slamming Florida, I spent an entire day flying around in the Hurricane. Just when you start to think that's geeky... there were two air traffic controller players, one in Miami and the other in the Bermudas, both who were there when I showed up AND when I left. They weren't flying or anything, they were just parked off the runway in cessnas directing flights, and apparently there were two others on the same server in different locations who were in and out all day/ night. The next day when I went back to chase the hurricane some more, they were there AGAIN! Now THAT is determination hehe.

Today's flight log:
Quote: "
[3] 291nm - KORD (Chicago Illinois USA) to KMSP (Minneapolis Minnesota USA)
Distance Traveled: 292.6 (est = 291 nm)
Fuel Consumed: 163.9 (est =107.2 gallons)
Flight Time: 01:22 (est = 00:58)
Notes: Uneventful flight. Spent more fuel than I should have, and that's as exciting as a flight to Minneapolis can apparently get."

edit: No offense to people who live in Minneapolis. I'm not saying Minneapolis sucks or anything, I've never been there so I wouldn't know... I'm just saying the *flight* to Minneapolis was somewhat boring.

hehe thanks for the warning I already left though and I'm parked in Aberdeen South Dakota (I would have stayed longer, as you'd suggested TDP, but I was a-itchin'to keep moving hehe). What's funny though: I always set up my flight planner for the next waypoint/ sub-leg in advance, as soon as I'm parked in an airport. But when I was setting up the Aberdeen-to-Deadwood flight, I found out that Deadwood's airport doesn't exist in the game, even though I *know* they have one there... I have a photograph of a sign that say's "AIRPORT" in huge letters, taken when I was there irl last September (no, I didn't take the picture just for that... there was a cool rock formation behind it and *THAT* was what I was taking a picture of, hehe... we don't have cool rock formations where I live). So unfortunately, I need to skip over Deadwood and make a long flight to Billings Montana. I hope that, in the least, something interesting happens on a long flight like that, like another engine failure or something If fun(ny) stuff doesn't happen, then it's just a long, boring flight, and who wants those?

Anyway, another flight journal entry for those of you who care (if anyone is actually reading these lol):

Quote: "[4] 222nm - KMSP (Minneapolis Minnesota USA) to KABR (Aberdeen South Dakota USA)
Distance Traveled: 224.3 nm (est = 222.1 nm)
Fuel Consumed: 115.1 gallons (est = 80.9 gallons)
Flight Time: 00:58 (est = 00:48)
Notes: The flight started off routine and stayed that way through most of the trip to Aberdeen, but when I got close enough to the airport to radio in to their ATC, I realized it was one of those tiny, rural airports that doesn't have a proper control tower. I hate having to announce my position, announce when I'm on base and on final, announce that I'm clear of the runway... eh, I'm lazy lol. But it's a nice quiet airport, only one other plane here, a Cessna. I definitely wouldn't suggest bringing a big boy here, like a Boeing or something... the runway was plentiful for my tiny Beechcraft, but a full-sized jet might have problems landing and even more problems taking off. Once again, I used too much fuel, and this time I was taking my time, trying to conserve as much as possible. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong! Here's an interesting sub-note: My previously-plotted flight course has to be somewhat-dramatically altered. Deadwood South Dakota, my planned next stop, doesn't apparently have an airport, according to the game. Not even a private one! Crap! So I'm going to have to skip Deadwood entirely and make a long haul to Billings Montana. Only one word to describe that: yuck."

I used to play flight sim back in 98, so I bought M$ flight sim 2005, installed it, but only played it once, b/c i couldn't remember all the keyboard functions. I couldn't even figure out how to take off the brakes. Then I got distracted by other things and havn't touched it since. I may just fire it up next time I'm bored, since this thread reminded me that I have the game

I personally find Flight Unlimited II more fun, though... the planes tear to pieces when you stress them, the ATCs have a sense of humour (We appreciate you mowin' the grass, but stay on the taxiways.) and the game doesn't freeze every ten seconds to load some scenery. It is quite basic in features, however, and does not have autopilot and you can only fly small aircraft in the San Francisco Bay area. Still fun though.

Okay, just picked up FS 2004 from work today--- in a tin, and the requirements aren't too hefty. How are the tutorials? I only have a dual-analog joystick for my PC, hopefully that will suffice.

You will find a massive learning center in the game. It covers everything! And you will find a "school" too. Here you're able to fly around with an instructor at your side that will guide you through it all etc...

I think the tutorials are very good.

The tutorials are unbelievable - the best I've personally seen out of the games I've ever played, imo. Just find the Learning Center and everything is at your fingertips You should also go to flight school and acquire at least a private pilot's license. Each lesson in the flight school consists of two parts: reading, and in-plane flight training. You'll need to read an often large unit of text, then you'll actually fly the plane and put that which you've learned into practice.

Another thing to keep in mind: If at any time you can't find the key(s) you're looking for, you can press F10 to bring up the kneeboard and view the key commands. You'll still be flying when you do this, so pause the game if you want to avoid a bad situation. The keys you'll probably use the most often:

G - Landing Gear up/ down
F5 - Flaps up full
F6 - Flaps up incremental
F7 - Flaps down incremental
F8 - Flaps down full
W - Change cockpit views (full cockpit, vital instruments over nose cam, no instruments over nose cam)
S - Change interior view (cockpit view, internal view (hat will move view around inside plane), tower view, external plane view)
SHIFT + P - Reverse Push (when you're about to taxi and you need to back up, this is the only way to do it that I know of)
F11 - Left differential brake (during taxi, used in taildragger planes like the Douglas DC-3 or the Piper Cub)
F12 - Right differential brake

About the stick: Do you mean dual analog like a console's controller? I'm not sure if that will work very well, but you could try it. I for one would have a hard time with it, I think. imo you'd be better off using a proper flight stick, preferably one with a throttle quadrant, trigger (for land brakes), hat switch (for looking around), and a few other buttons (I have five buttons and a trigger, with the trigger as my land brake, button #2 set to parking brake, 3/4 set to pitch trim, and 5/6 set to differential brakes). If the buttons on your gamepad are multi-stage like a PS2's controller then you might be alright, but otherwise your landings might be somewhat difficult.

In terms of planes, I suggest you start out small and learn in a Cessna Skylane, Cessna Skyhawk, Beechcraft King Air Type 350 (that's my plane), Beechcraft Baron 58, Bravo Mooney, or if you want to fly a jet, the Bombardier Leerjet. I definitely wouldn't jump into the biggest Boeing I could find, hehe. The selection of planes is staggering, including the Wright Brothers Flyer, the "Spirit of St. Louis" (which Charles Lindburgh used to cross the Atlantic), the Curtiss Jenny, the Ford Tri-Motor, the DC-3, Amelia Erheart's plane (spelling is way off, I know), and dozens more There's something for everyone, and if the plane you're looking for isn't in the game, it's only a mod away But be careful modding airports and planes and delete any that don't work or they can mess up your game!

Yay, I'm inspiring others to play I'm still hoping that someone will end up flying around the world with me that would be the ultimate, hehe

Here's today's flight log:
Quote: "[5] KABR (Aberdeen South Dakota USA) to KBIL (Billings Montana USA) (August 9th 2006)
Distance Traveled: 427.2 nm (est = 423.5 nm)
Fuel Consumed: 188.1 gallons (est = 153.7 gallons)
Flight Time: 01:54 (est = 01:23)
Notes: It was a really long flight to Billings, and I kept having to climb to get out of nasty turbulence through most of South Dakota and the eastern part of Montana. I forgot to re-fuel while in Aberdeen, so I burned through all of my reserves and a pretty hefty chunk of my primaries before landing in Billings. I also learned why I'm wasting so much fuel: I'm spending more than I need to on takeoffs, and I'm flying with a fuel flow reading of 3.5 to 4 when really all I need to stay in the air is 2. Flying with a fuel flow at 2 would severely lengthen my flights as I'll only be cruising at about 135 to 140 knots, but on longer flights (like the ones in Russia that are coming up a few days from now) I'll definitely need to keep an eye on fuel, and fly with a fuel flow of 1.5 to 2.0."

Ive played flight sims before, and X-Plane has to be my favorite. A flight around the world sounds pretty cool, but im far too lazy to get further than out of my state :p I've played flight unlimited II as well, which was very fun. The thing about x-plane is it calculates the way the planes fly based on the actual model/airfoil, not just data entered in by the programmer. Good luck with your flight matt!

Hold down shift and press E to open the doors. Interesting how in the options there is control settings for a concorde nose, but i don't see any concorde in the game!

The game is extremely mod-friendly. Some of the commands in the game are designed so that mod-makers have a bit more freedom when making their mod planes. The problem is, most mod planes kind of stink. I downloaded Airforce One last summer and it was nothing if not terrible... bad textures, poor gauge layout, and the sound effects were all off I'm not saying all mods stink... some of them are really cool, like the Airbus 340, the Goodyear Blimp, and the SR-71 Blackbird. I still want to find a decent Concorde, a Gulfstream Jet, and a commercial turboprop (I'm absolutely in love with prop-driven planes )

OMG those are rad I'd love to have one of those irl. I wish I lived in the country or something, like on a farm with a lot of flat, free space, as opposed to being in the middle of the city... I'd love to try and build a "go-plane" but (A) I'm not sure if it's possible) and (B) if I did, I wouldn't have anywhere to try and fly it. But how cool would that be, hehe. Ack, you know what? All I ever hear about is how bad cows smell. nvm! But I should design it and sell the plans on e-bay and let someone else build it

New flight log:

Quote: "[6] KBIL (Billings Montana USA) to KBTM (Butte Montana USA)
Distance Traveled: 166.1 (est = 166.3 nm)
Fuel Consumed: 98.0 (est = 64.2 gallons)
Flight Time: 00:27 (est = 00:34)
Notes: Uneventful flight, and a short one, too. The runway is tucked behind a mountain so I had to line up early and come down somewhat quickly for the landing."

Edit: Sorry for the double-post... didn't realize I was doing it until it was too late
