When I run DB Pro games on my Win 2000 machine, I get a noticeable "stutter". It happens about once a second, and it would appear that the games lags drastically for a cycle. It's noticeable using SET CAMERA TO FOLLOW, because in this mode it makes the camera jerk to catch up.

Anyway, this isn't about DB Pro, what I want to know is how to track the problem down. I've looked in task manager, on high update speed, and there's too much going on to blame any one process. I've stopped various processes, including firewall (Sygate) and anti-virus (AVG), without success.

Are there any tools out there that might help me track this down? Here's some vital statistics...

AMD Barton 3000+
512MB Ram
Oodles of disk space
Geforce 5200FX 128MB
Windows 2000 SP4

i had a framerate problem a few months ago, took it to the pc shop several times, they couldnt find anything wrong with it,ran lots of virus scans, finally fixed the problem by buying a desktop fan & aiming it at the vent for my cpu & video card.

Sounds like there is a process thats regularly polling something - could either be an IM app like Skype or maybe something more malicious? I assume you're a carefull surfer?

One thing you could try is running file and registry monitors and see if the stuttering coincides with some process accessing files or the registry. I use regmon and filemon from sysinternals.com.

Also the frequency of once a second indicates that possibly it has to do with network activity, try disabling your network adapters and see if the stuttering goes away.

In addition, some tray icons for things like digital camera or printer managers will scan periodically for the presence of devices, you should try and kill those processes to see if they are the culprits.

The only time I ever had a stutter was when I had a built in modem, and also another modem connected. I had to disable the onboard one in Bios.

Oh actually there was another time.. same thing but with 2 sound cards. Onboard sound, and soundcard both running at same time.

So maybe you have onboard, and sound,or modem connected or similar.

I had to remove my new sound card to actually stop the problem in the end.

I hope this isn't the case, but I may be the guilty person for this. The latest version of CodeSurge does a quick check every second to see if there's a runtime error. It shouldn't cause any slowdown, and I didn't notice it with any of my projects (although I don't have any graphical intensive projects). Just a thought.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

I always get this lagging problem, no matter what I do, I've even seen my computer do it on 2D projects. I'd be intrigued by the solutions here. Assuming that it isn't 'your ram is crap'.

I compiled, closed CodeSurge, and then ran it. I still had the problem.

Update your drivers for your graphics card and sound card. My X-Fi has problems like that sometimes, Creative can't write decent drivers anymore

Well, that's a relief to me, but unfortunately doesn't solve your problem. It sounds to me like it's probably a dodgy driver or something might be overheating.

i had a dreaddful problam like that once, about every 2 sescs my pc would freeze for about half a second to a second, then run fast until it happened again. similarly task manager couldn't detect anything in the processes or the network graph.. but interestingly the processor usage graph spiked... i asume it was spyware or a virus but i couldn't find any related process, i think i just ended up reinstalling windows and everythign ran fine again.
the problem was not related to any games or anything, the pc literally froze no matter what i was doing, even just browsing through folders on my hard disk.

i hope you find an easier fix than i did.

AMD athlon 64 3000+, 1GB ddr400, 400GB total hdd, ati radeon x700pro 256mb (pci-e) 17" tft(@1280x1024).

IRQ conflict with the graphics card?

I had a couple of SCSI cards on my PCI bus a while ago. I pulled them, put them in a spare machine & (the same) problem solved - stuttering FX5500 graphics card, nVidia drivers.

Device Manager > View > Resources by Type > IRQ

Make sure that nothing is sharing the IRQ with the graphics card.

I have an XP3000+, 1.5gb DDR333, a 6600GT and I'm programming 3k text-based exe's?!

I also had a stutter problem where once every second whole coumpter would freeze. I narrowed it down to the external ZIP drive I was using connected to parralel port. I used to use ZIP drives a lot in the old days. I doubt if anyone uses them anymore.

Boo!

I checked my nVidia drivers for my mobo, I'm on the latest version. Updated my nVidia 5200 FX drivers. Sound is on-board. Disabled the network port that isn't used.

I have no permanent USB devices. My graphics tablet is disconnected when not in use. The scanner is also disconnected.

And I still have the problem!!!

Try starting your computer up in safe-mode, and see if the problem still occurs. If it does, it's probably a hardware problem - if not, my guess is that there is some kind of driver conflict. Have you installed any hardware recently?
