Ok,well, today I was playing dynasty warriors 4 in my brothers room, and just now I realized something: Star Wars Battle Fronts: 2 is basicly a sci-fi version of dynasty warriors. Except that in SWBF they don't have commanding gererals who if you kill you win,but the basic concept is the same: "KILL ANYTHING THAT MOVES!!!!...thats not on your team..."

Woohoo. DP is finally released!

You could also compare it to BattleField 1942, BattleField Vietnam, and Battlefield 2. Its all the same stuff with different twists, and styles.

I'm working on a high res photorealistic texture pack. High res as in 7 megapixels, e-mail me with suggestions.

Wow, I just realized something... Every first person shooter ever made is just another clone of every other one... How very funny that is.

It's rare that you're going to see unique game idea's about these days

No way. The basic concept is the same, but Battlefield 1942 is much, much different from, say, Counterstrike. Play the games!

Blood, for me was one of the most innovative FPSes. Not Blood II, mind - that sucked balls. The first one was great - very inventive:

Aerosol Can + a Lighter = Flame Thrower

Also the first FPS game to feature a level on a moving train?

Probably. Can only really think of UT (not sure on original, but even that was after Blood I believe) and Soldier of Fortune really. Mods for Doom don't count (sure someone would have come up with a train mod).

Ang on. Didn't Goldeneye have a moving train level? Must dig out my N64. Must come pretty close to Blood in release time.

Oooh. So close. Looks like Blood beat it by 2-3 months.

Oh yeah, I bought that on the day of N64 launch! Probably more like a Cobalt Miner Transport or somesuch, but was totally a train. Was rock hard if I remember rightly. Ah. Memory coming back. Wasn't it a 3rd person level and not FPS?

You know what looks a lot like Dynasty Warriors? Nintety-Nine Nights.

And I for one think every Battlefield release after the Desert Combat mod was another roll down the hill.

lol very true, DC is the greatest mod of all time. I've never seen a mod, for any game mind you, that was as professionally-made, gorgeous, and absolutely fun. Dang it, why did you have to bring up Desert Combat! Now I need to go play it! I'll be in Punch & Pie Urban if anyone needs me lol

I'm a regular CS player. I even used the fancy abbreviation. I still think Desert Combat pwns the snot out of it. Unless we're talking about CS:Source on Italy with 30 bots with knives/glocks versus two human players with paras holed up in the house. Fun stuff there.

I dunno... my opinion on CS is biased. Counterstrike and Rogue Spear came of age around the same time, so CS players (who played it back in the late 90's when it came into existence) and Rogue players have always argued over which game was better. Rogue was better in that it was more realistic and had a far bigger catalog of weapons, CS was better in that it's AI wasn't idiotic and the one-shot-one-kill aspect wasn't as rough on players, and the list goes on and on At the end of the debate, it really came down to a matter of taste, and my taste swayed in the favor of Rogue. But I totally agree with Bear, while I acknowledge that CS is awesome, I've played it... and it doesn't hold a candle to DC, imho. When I flew an Apache for the first time, I was in love... when I flew an F16 in "No-Fly Zone" through multi-tiered clouds against 32 opponents, with a team joining me in flight of 31, I said "yup... mods don't get any better than this." But Osiris is right, they're different games and in most regards they're impossible to compare.

Czero and css upwards all had bots,

i used to play css but its pretty boring after a while sinc each map is small and each match is pretty repetative, however i agree with matt, desert combat was the best mod ive ever played .

I said that the Desert Combat: Final mod was the greatest mod for any game ever and the Counter Strike fans started in hehe. At least they named a mod that contended though. Throughout the entire conversation I was waiting for someone to say "No way, hot coffee is way better!"

You are all wrong! Doom was first! And Unreal Tournament 2004 was very original. it featured land, air and space based vehicles, Alot of different game types (onslaught beeing my favorite), alot of weapons including 3 super weapons, over 95 official maps with thousands of user maps on the internet, and it has (in my opinion) one of the most addictive engines. when I got the demo, i played it for about six hours straight, went immediatly to Ebay and ordered the full version. I scarcely stop playing it.

Doom was first at what? Wolfenstein 3D was the first FPS game, and Bard's Tale was the first game to get modded (that I know of anyway).

Wolfenstein was class. Always preffered the AI to Doom. If you shot someone then nearby door would open and soldiers would try and find you. Class. Doom was draw droppingly good looking though. I remember playing Ultima Underworld just before Doom came out, and that really ranks as the first amazingly good looking game of that sort, but for some reason it got forgotten compared to Doom.

Yah, Wolf3D definitely set the new genre. I remember playing it when it first came out, with my dad, and we were both amazed. Funny thing is, we didn't realize at the time that this was going to be a huuuuuge genre in the future.

Soon after Wolf3D there were dozens of crap-quality games that tried to immitate... remember Rise of the Triads? That was cool in that you could look up and down--- but it was still crap in my opinion.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that Wolf3D was made by 10 people in 3 months' time. If that's true, WOW. Even today, that's a feat imo. And it became the world's first true FPS title... that's insane! Whoever worked on that team better have really awesome jobs in the indstry today

Nope. Although Doom did make us feel that way.

Wasn't it the same people who made Doom (Id)? Actually I remember hearing that Wold3D was the reason why all Id games have been banned in Germany ever since.

Interesting. Never heard of these games though. More like I don't remember hearing about these games though, as at the time I was massively out of it (uni days). Hardly missed any game news at the time:-
