I have a bunch of boxes that are made using the built in DBP commands. I want to have a basic texture thats a solid color with writing for the sides and a solid color for the ends. My question is how do I figure out how big I should make the texture?

You should make it using power of 2 sizes; choose from:

in any combination.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Im talking about width and height though. Its kinda hard to describe it because I dont quite understand getting the texture to fit an object.

It normally fits 1x1 unless differently specified by scale object texture

You can't do it with a primitive box. The full texture is pasted onto every side of the box. So if you have a square texture with "Yo!" written on it, you will have "Yo!" written on every side of the box.

If you want different textures on each side, you have to make a box model, unfold the UV coordinates as if you are making a dice out of card, and then design your texture to fit the unfolded design.

Ahhh damn thought maybe I could get around that, guess not. Can I use a 3D modeler program to make the box and then uvunwrap it, make the texture, and THEN apply it to the primitive? Meaning I dont have to load an object?

'Fraid Not. The UV coordinates for each side of the box primitive overlay each other.

Attached is a cube in 3DS and dbo formats. It's UV mapped and a template texture is also included, as well as the Wings 3D file. I think I've marked up the squares correctly on the texture, but you'll have to check when it's loaded.

By the way, it's 2x2x2
