When I went to Realarcade, popcap, gish etc, I saw 2D games, lots of puzzles and side scrollers, but not any old 3D games like Doom clones and the like. I was wondering if anyone knows any sites that still sell old school style FPS like the ones mentioned in the subject.

Im curious since I was planning to make one myself. I have a few hundred pages of notes, code, sketches, weapons, enemies, bosses, levels and stuff ive wanted to put in a game like this.

It would be great to see a commercial pixel based FPS being sold on a site somewhere to get me revved up to make my own!

if no such site exists or no one sells these games anymore, hmmmmmmmmmm.....

There's a site that gives them out for free, and hosts online sessions of them too, but I can't remember where it was I'll ask my brother tomorrow if he remembers where it was.

Really the PC is dragging itself away from that era - it was never a good 2D platform, so I'd be surprised to find anyone outside the indi community making a 2D PC FPS when the world demands HL2 graphics. To sell on the PC, it would have to have a lot of new features, like anti-aliased sprites, high resolutions, and an absolute ton of enemies.

I think the only commercially-viable plaform left for these games is the Nintendo DS, multiplayer Doom on the DS would be great, but people would actually buy a fast paced FPS game like Doom on DS. The precursors to Doom would be good too - like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder, those block dungeon games would work great on DS and people are crying out for this stuff.

whoa, this has gotta be the quickest response ever...

@Matt Rock- thanks for that link I got it open in a new page right now. Its legal, those files are shareware, at least the Doom 1 anyway (2.9 MB, was the download size when I first downloaded it in junior high)

@Van B- would it be possible to get a DBC game onto the DS or would I have to build the game in C?

The pixel powered FPS I came up with will definitely make a mark on the DS if I could get it one there (hint: ive been developing it since Junior high school, yeah ive graduated a few years ago from high school so this games LOADED!)

@Benny53- aside from the wolf3d engine, which doesnt use .X files (for maps)do you know any other fps engines for dbc that can be integrated with a simple collision system (i have NGC registered)and sprite based enemies, objects etc etc? Im willing to drop my latest project (2D) and start on this one, its been almost 10 years in the making (kinda like DNF)

@RUCCUS- we meet again Marathon was cool. It seemed too advanced to be using pixel art instead of 3D but they made sequals to the game so it definitely payed off. (Now if I could get one up and running like that)

@Big Man- DOS....man I miss it. When Windows goes belly-up, theres always momma-DOS to pick windows up and put her back on her feet. I got an old Win98 machine and ill play those games (but I warn you Bigman, you may have given me even more ideas for this decade in development FPS im working on...the game may stretch from 115 to 144 levels )

@s0l1dsnak3123- again, more ideas for the game, thanks for a site that I would never have found on my own!

@Lucifer- a bit odd how your name comes up in conjunction with the company that made Duke3D but refuse to get to work on Duke Nukem Forever...... However, Duke3D is still my #1 pixel fueled FPS (heck, look at my email name). Easy map editor, almost everything configurable. Why cant games today be as simple to mod as they were back then.

And to top it all off: My assumption would be that no one here knows of any site that sells these old school FPS that have been made by indi programmers and designers of recent (as in the last 3 or 4 years). I mean, I wouldnt mind being the first person (little pun)to make an old school FPS in 2006 and put it up for download.

Thanks again!

Just a warning--- DON'T post Abandonware sites here. If you're looking for this, do your own search. It is not technically legal, so don't link to them here, thanks

Extract the two zip duke3d_xtr.zip and duke3d_sd files into the duke3d directory, then run eduke.exe which should also be in the duke3d directory. It might only be compatible with the atomic edition though but it should work

You also need an opengl compatible card, which it should be unless its 10yrs old

Sorry, didn't know the sites I listed were illegal... my bad.

What about games that have been made free by the companies who made them? Rockstar is giving out GTA 1 and GTA 2, and probably GTA London soon, absolutely free to anyone who wants them, right from their own website. Is anyone else doing that?

Obviously if the company gave out the games for free, then it's all good and cool

Prince of Persia was NOT released by Broderbund, and Duke3D was not released for free either.

But Abandonware is a grey area in that some countries it *may* be legal if the game is X years old--- but just to be safe and to make sure TGC doesn't get in crap, we shouldn't link to them here.

It takes 5 seconds to find the sites from a search engine anyways

All good points I like what Rockstar did though, that's noble. After any game I release for profit gets to a certain age, I'll release it for free too. I wish more companies did that, like Sin (which we're talking about elsewhere) and a few others.

in the aup it says you can't link directly to sites that break the rules, but if we link to a site that has links to that stuf it's okay. so can we make a site that only has a link to an abomdaonware sight, and then link that site to here?

Zai - Don't be a tool. You know what the answer to this is--- just don't link to an abandonware site.

And don't link to a site that has links to abandonware sites. Got it? This is the same with anything.

ooooooooook. This is the second time I started a topic and it got messy. The last one got locked, and I didnt even post that much!

I withdraw my question. I found (or didnt) the answer....No one has made a pixel powered FPS in the past few years, only 3D stuff.

BUT......if you have either made or are making an FPS run on pixels, push me an email, Id sure like to play one....3D is getting.....too familiar. Lets see some old school pro stuff one last time!

Thanks.

Well... the eXtends package supports billboards, which is very much like how graphics were set up in the old Doom games... maybe that'll make you smile =)

Ohhhh--- I was so ready to beat you with the ban stick, but the site seems legit enough in that it offers the demos and shareware versions of the games.

Interesting site.

Megaton Cat- not in a bad way, I just figured that some TGC members would have ressurected an old FPS game or know of someone outside of the forums who did. Which brings me to.........

Zaibatsu- Im a turbosquid member (pretty inactive though), looks like theres some hope after all!

Saikoro- I hevent been around in a while, whats the eXtends package for, FPSC? If so, Ill stop typing and pick that prog RIGHT NOW (sorta).

DB user 2006+- (<-plus minus, hee hee) Dosgames is one of my favorites, I used to download all the FPS and the side scrollers I could on the few disks I brought to school. When you say you found the site, surely you dont mean that you *recently* found it right ?

Jeku- beware the mad moderator !

Megaton Cat- amen.

Im gonna check that game, Amzae, out and see if I can link up to someone over there who knows someone else and someone else etc etc thats doing old school FPS. Think of it....65 levels, 100 weapon variations, speedy cutscenes, minimal load times..FREE!!

Ok thats enough for now....

Nah, I played it and beat it for the PS I think...Ill use that suggestion to get me Duke Nukem Total Meltdown- I NEVER beat the last episode Plug and Pray and I still wanna play it... anyhow, again what Im interested in is if anyone in lets say the past year or 3 year (in the 2000's) has made a Doom or Duke clone and I havent found that to be so. The turbosquid game is a wold clone and while thats cool and all, what Im looking for something a bit more davanced like a Doom clone with stairs, parallaxed skies, and Duke3d tricks like train cars, elevators, and the simplicity of the level design program, you know?

If I find anything in the next 30 days Ill be back, unless of course someone heres got a good Doom clone going on here
